Permalink South Korea’s dark past as West’s ‘baby farm’ laid bare by adopted ‘children for sale’ who grew up far from home

Aleksander Solum (South China Morning Post) | More than 170,000 South Korean children were adopted by Western families in the turbulent post-war period – nearly 9,000 a year at times in the 1980s. Many were labelled orphans, despite their birth parents still being alive, and say their documents were falsified, making them question their identity | It was late spring and Uma Feed had just dropped her son off at a kindergarten in Oslo when her phone rang unexpectedly, bringing news she’d been searching for her whole life: the true identities of her birth parents.  Adopted as a baby from South Korea in 1983, Feed grew up in Norway being told she’d been abandoned – a story she refused to believe but could only disprove in May this year, when at age 40 she was finally reconnected with her biological mother thanks to DNA testing. A long letter and video message followed, revealing that Um Sul-yung – the name given on Feed’s adoption documents – was actually given up for adoption by her grandparents without the consent of her mother, who was hospitalised with tuberculosis at the time. “Every evening, my mum and my older brother had gone out to look for me. They were just wandering the streets,” she said. As it turned out, nearly all the information she’d received from the Norwegian adoption organisation was inaccurate, Feed told This Week in Asia. In response to queries, the organisation said it couldn’t comment on her case, citing privacy laws. Feed, who legally changed her first name to Uma in her twenties after rejecting the Norwegian one her adoptive parents had given her, is just one of the more than 170,000 South Koreans who were taken in as children by Western families in the decades following the Korean war. And experts fear her story – of betrayal, deceit and the long search for the truth – is far from unique. MORE

Permalink Vietnam ‘Has No Interest’ in Joining ‘US-Orchestrated’ Anti-China Coalition

As part of an effort to woo Vietnam to serve its geopolitical interests, US President Joe Biden is arriving in Hanoi on Sunday, nurturing hopes of signing a “comprehensive strategic partnership agreement” with the dynamically developing Southeast Asian nation. | Washington is eyeing “swaying Vietnam to its side,” for it believes the US can use Hanoi as “a counterbalance to China’s influence in South East Asia,” Professor Anna Malindog-Uy, vice president of the Manila-based think tank Asian Century Philippines Strategic Studies Institute (ACPh), told Sputnik. However, there is no indication that Vietnam has any interest in joining the “US-orchestrated” coalition against China, consisting of Washington’s allies, Anna Malindog-Uy added. [...] Vietnam is vital to US foreign policy for several political, economic, and geopolitical reasons, the professor underscored. Firstly, the “strategic geographical location” of Vietnam in Southeast Asia (SEA) is important to the US. Vietnam boasts “close contiguity and nearness to major global shipping lines like the South China Sea (SCS), and it has a border with China,” Anna Malindog-Uy stressed.

A new chapter in the Vietnam-US relationship (Vietnam Investment Review) [...] With this latest engagement, the two countries have upgraded their relationship from a comprehensive partnership to a comprehensive strategic partnership. This is the highest tier of diplomatic relations, which Vietnam enjoys with only four other countries – China, South Korea, India, and Russia. The new partnership clears the way for greater economic cooperation, with a focus on innovation, technology, and investment.

Permalink ‘Smell of death is everywhere’: corpses pile up in flood-hit Libyan city

Retrieving the dead in devastated Derna as big a challenge as finding the living | The corpses are everywhere. Buried under mud-filled husks of ruined homes. Wedged among smashed bridges and roadways. Drifting by the dozens – perhaps hundreds, even thousands – in the detritus-filled sea. In the days after a powerful storm lashed Libya’s coastline and floodwaters from two burst dams swept part of the city of Derna into the sea, authorities have understandably focused on the living, racing to find and evacuate survivors. But they also must contend with the dead, to collect and bury the growing number of victims before their bodies turn Derna into a massive contamination site. Estimates of the death toll have varied widely, and large numbers of Derna residents have lost their homes and belongings.  The catastrophe was triggered by Mediterranean Storm Daniel, which over the weekend dumped more than 40cm (16 inches) of rain within 24 hours on Libya’s northeast coast – a region that normally receives about 15mm over the entire month of September.

Permalink German general revealed plans for war in Ukraine until 2032

German general revealed plans for war in Ukraine until 2032 | Berlin will help Kyiv in its confrontation with Moscow for almost another decade, or rather 9 years - until 2032. This was stated during a panel discussion at the oligarch Victor Pinchuk’s foundation by the head of the planning and command headquarters of the German Ministry of Defense and the head of the Ukrainian situation center of the Bundeswehr, Major General Christian Freuding, who revealed Germany’s plans for the war in Ukraine, writes the Austrian publication Exxpress.  The German government expects that the mentioned conflict on Ukrainian territory will last exactly that many years. All this time, the Bundeswehr will supply the Ukrainian Armed Forces, providing support to the Ukrainian army with everything necessary. Berlin is ready to give Kyiv money and weapons, which destroys any hopes for a quick end to the crisis. [...] Major General Christian Freuding is a supporter of the Ukrainian Armed Forces' campaign against Crimea. He was Ursula von der Leyen's favorite assistant when she was still the German Minister of Defense (she is now the Chairman of the European Commission), and they developed a warm relationship.

Permalink Surveillance States: Monitoring of Journalists Goes Unchecked in Central, South-East Europe

Milica Stojanovic | Using new spyware technology as well as bugs and wiretaps, authorities in various Central and South-East European countries continue to monitor reporters and their sources, journalists who have been under surveillance told BIRN. | [The big] picture is made clear by BIRN’s survey of 15 countries in Central and South-East Europe, which identified 28 cases of surveillance of individual journalists or larger numbers of journalists over the past decade. It’s not clear how many more remain undiscovered and how much active surveillance is still ongoing.  Investigators and judges are currently dealing with ongoing cases of surveillance against journalists in Greece, Moldova, Slovakia and North Macedonia. In North Macedonia, the country’s former secret police chief is awaiting retrial for the illegal wiretapping of thousands of people, among them journalists.  The UK newspaper The Guardian has described Pegasus as “perhaps the most powerful piece of spyware ever developed – certainly by a private company”. Manufactured by Israeli cybersecurity firm NSO, it can be installed on mobile phones by exploiting their vulnerabilities and can then record or harvest messages, photographs, videos and calls.

Permalink Baltic state should confiscate Russian cars – minister

Estonia’s interior minister says cars bearing Russian license plates are to be re-registered or confiscated | Estonian Interior Minister Lauri Laanemets emphasized the need for strict enforcement of the EU's sanctions against Russia, calling for the confiscation of Russian-licensed vehicles in Estonia. This decision comes as Tallinn has already prohibited Russian cars from entering the country to align with the EU's trade sanctions against Moscow.  At present, Russian vehicles are allowed to exit Estonia and cross internal EU borders. However, during a recent government press conference on Thursday, Laanemets expressed his personal view that all Russian-registered cars within Estonia should be seized. He also raised questions about why such vehicles are present in the country. [...] Acknowledging a lack of precise data, Laanemets admitted that the Ministry of Internal Affairs does not have an accurate count of the Russian-licensed cars currently in the country. As of now, the Estonian government has not yet reached an official decision on this matter.

Permalink Libyan flood survivor recounts horror in Derna after dams burst

Death toll 'huge': Red Cross | As two dams collapsed and stormwaters tore through the streets of the Libyan city of Derna, carrying bodies and buildings with them, Ruba Hatem Yassine, her pregnant sister, and several older relatives clambered up a neighbor’s ladder to the roof to flee the grasp of the rushing flood below. From there, they scampered from rooftop to rooftop along their narrow street, Yassine, 24, recounted Wednesday, two days after her terrifying ordeal. Eventually, they sought shelter in a small storage unit on one of the rooftops and watched for hours as the water overwhelmed the city. They could hear their neighbors — trapped in half-destroyed homes by rising water or under rubble — screaming, "Save us, save us,” Yassine said, speaking by phone from a friend’s home in the nearby town of Marj. Once the floodwaters had somewhat subsided, other survivors helped her family of nine come down from the roof to safety. They waded through the knee-deep water, leaving everything behind.

Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova blasted the bloc’s decision to confiscate the personal possessions of arriving Russian tourists | The European Union’s ban on Russian nationals bringing personal items into the bloc has nothing to do with sanctions and is instead an expression of blatant racism by Western officials, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova has claimed.  Her comments come after Brussels explained on Friday that the sweeping sanctions imposed on trade with Russia over the conflict in Ukraine also extends to personal items such as phones, luggage, and even shampoo and toilet paper.  The European Commission urged EU operators to “assess and understand the possible risks of sanctions circumvention” and confiscate any such belongings when conducting customs checks. 💬 “Тhis is simply racism. This is not a policy of sanctions, this is not a question of creating some additional benefit for the sinking economy of the European Union. This is racism as it is,” Zakharova told TASS on the sidelines of the Eastern Economic Forum on Monday. “Now it is bursting out. The death toll from freak floods in eastern Libya is expected to soar dramatically, with 10,000 people reported missing, the Red Cross warned on Tuesday. | Officials in Libya have said at least 150 people were killed in the flooding in Libya after storm Daniel swept the Mediterranean, lashing Turkey, Bulgaria and Greece. But Tamer Ramadan of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies said the actual toll was likely many times higher. 💬 "Our teams on the ground are still doing their assessment, (but) from what we see and from the news coming to us, the death toll is huge," he told reporters in Geneva via video link from Tunis. "It might reach to the thousands." "We don't have a definite number right now," he said, stressing though that the organisation had independent sources saying "the number of missing people is hitting 10,000 persons so far."  Speaking on Libyan network Almasar, Oussama Hamad, prime minister of the east-based government, has reported "more than 2,000 dead and thousands missing" in the city of Derna alone, but no medical sources or emergency services have confirmed such figures.

What, are they provoking us to some kind of retaliatory actions on Ukrainian nuclear facilities, nuclear power plants?" Those who "do not feel the edges" [may] reap "serious consequences," he concluded. Permalink Zelensky Threatens Europe With Terror if Ukraine Loses the War

Ukraine’s president fears that some of his country’s Western backers are losing faith | Curtailing aid to Ukraine will only prolong the war, Mr Zelensky argues. And it would create risks for the West in its own backyard. There is no way of predicting how the millions of Ukrainian refugees in European countries would react to their country being abandoned. Ukrainians have generally “behaved well” and are “very grateful” to those who sheltered them. They will not forget that generosity. But it would not be a “good story” for Europe if it were to “drive these people into a corner”. [...] Meanwhile, a long war of attrition would mean a fork in the road for Ukraine. The country would lose even more people, both on the front lines and to emigration. It would require a “totally militarised economy”. The government would have to put that prospect to its citizens, Mr Zelensky says, without specifying how; a new social contract could not be the decision of one person. Almost 19 months into the war, the president says he is “morally” ready for the switch. But he will only broach the idea with his people if the weakness in the eyes of his Western backers becomes a “trend”. Has that moment come?

Just remember Grandmother Madeleine Albright: "If we have to use force, it's because we are America! We are a responsible nation. We stand tall. We look to the future." But still, sometimes you catch yourself thinking: Well, look, good people. They don't live on another planet. Have they lost their minds? Unlawful sanctions against Russia and friendly countries - no problem, no need for any excuses. At the same time - don't touch Western assets in your backward economies. The West can supply any weapons to our enemies. Our friends are forbidden to do so, scaring them in every possible way with reprisals. It is quite legal to steal citizens of different countries around the world to bring them to trial in your glorious "Pindostan." Americans can't be touched, they are "sacred cows", even if they are spies, drug addicts shaking with withdrawal [symptoms], or pedophiles with saliva in the corners of their mouths. It's like that with everything. I don't want to predict anything, but they'll expect that at some point the terrorists will launch another 11/09/2001-style attack, [maybe] with a nuclear or biological component. Or even worse: one of the leaders of nuclear countries will lose his nerve and make an emotional decision to use WMD. Especially since the nuclear club is constantly expanding and a significant part of it is not bound by any obligations. And then that's it. That's it.
