Permalink Kremlin responds to Crimea claim by ‘aggressive US hawk’

Washington’s support for Kiev’s strikes on the peninsula highlights its role in stoking global tensions, Putin’s spokesman said | US Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Victoria Nuland said on Thursday that Russian military installations in Crimea “are legitimate targets” for Ukraine, and that Washington supports Kiev’s attacks on them. The peninsula overwhelmingly voted to become part of Russia in 2014 following a Western-backed coup in Kiev, but Ukraine still views it as part of its own territory. In an interview with the Rossiya-1 TV channel, Peskov described Nuland as part of 💬 “a very large group of the most aggressive hawks in American politics”. The spokesman said the diplomat’s remarks “once again emphasize the depth of differences between us” and highlight “the role of the United States as the main instigator of existing global tensions.”  On Friday, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova condemned Nuland’s statement on Crimea as 💬 “staggering” and “absurd,” calling it proof of “the US involvement in the Ukraine conflict.” In addition to supplying Kiev with weapons, the US is now “pushing the Kiev regime to further escalation,” she said. “This is what we had warned about before and what had forced us to launch a special military operation.”

Permalink Finland Reverses Course, Says It Will Join NATO Without Sweden

Turkey has said it could approve Finland without Sweden | The comments came after Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Sweden wouldn’t receive support from Ankara over a Quran-burning protest that was held in front of the Turkish embassy in Turkey. Erdogan also said Turkey could approve Finland without Sweden. Finnish Defense Minister Mikko Savola told The Associated Press on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference on Saturday that Finland would prefer to join NATO with Sweden but wouldn’t delay its membership if Turkey only approves Helskinki’s membership.  The change in position came just two weeks after Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin said her country wouldn’t join NATO without Sweden.  If Helsinki joins NATO without Stockholm, it would still significantly raise tensions with Moscow as Finland shares an over 800-mile border with Russia, and the Russian military plans to boost its presence in western Russia in response.

eugyppius | Welt report uncovers evidence of serious irregularities in the Pfizer phase 3 Comirnaty trial, suggesting systematic attempts to cover up adverse events at the Argentine clinical site. | Pfizer enrolled 44,000 people across 270 clinical sites in the phase 3 clinical trials for the Pfizer/BioNTech Comirnaty vaccine. Permalink Security Conference in Munich: Russia not participating for second year

The conference will start on Friday with a video address by Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky | The 59th forum will bring together several hundreds of politicians from around the world, heads of leading international organizations, representatives of business and scientific circles and experts from 96 countries. Russia has not been participating in the conference at the official level for the second consecutive year.  The decision not to invite officials from Russia has also been criticized in Germany. Gregor Gysi, the German Left Party’s foreign affairs spokesperson in the Bundestag, has slammed it as a lost opportunity to talk about the possible ceasefire in Ukraine. Organizers have not invited Iran’s leadership this year either, same as the Alternative for Germany party, which critically evaluates the policy of the country’s government, including on Russia. Sixteen years ago, in 2007, Russian President Vladimir Putin addressed the Munich Security Conference with a speech devoted to foreign policy that had an international resonance. The speech focused on the vision of Russia’s place and role in the world considering the reality and threats of the time and the unacceptability of unipolar model in the current policy. Putin pointed out then that unilateral, sometimes illegitimate actions had not solved a single problem, often generating new volatile areas though, whereas certain norms of some countries, first of all the US, crossed their borders. He noted that the international law should be universal. The Russian president also stressed the importance of a balance of interests in the security area, adding that the world could only develop on the basis of a multisided model. A whole number of experts share the view that many of Putin’s warnings come true nowadays.

Permalink The Buildup To War In Ukraine - February 13 2022

Moon of Alabama | In early 2022 Ukraine had finished the preparations for an overwhelming attack on the renegade People Republics of Donetsk and Luhansk (DPR and LNR). Half of the Ukrainian army, some 120,000 men recruited and trained during the last 7 years, were stationed near the ceasefire line and ready to go. On the opposing side only some 40,000 men were under arms. They would have little chance to withstand an onslaught.  Russia could not let a Ukrainian attack happen. If Ukraine could regain the renegade provinces it would have been able to join NATO. Russian public opinion was decisively on the side of the Russian speaking DNR and LPR. It would surely demand an intervention. Since the 2014 coup in Kiev some four million Ukrainians had already moved to Russia. There are lots of family ties between the two countries. In sight of this Russia had put some of its own forces on alert and had moved weapons and munition to assembling points near the Ukrainian border.  The U.S. had for months warned of an upcoming Russian attack on Ukraine. It could do that because it knew the Ukraine would attempt to regain the republics by force. It knew that Russia would have to respond. On January 12 2022 CIA director Bill Burns had secretly met Zelensky in Kiev. Burns often carries messages from President Joe Biden. On Sunday February 13 2022, after a phone call with U.S. president Joe Biden, the Ukrainian president Zelensky gave the final order for the planned Ukrainian attack. That the decision had been made was immediately leaked in London as well as in Kiev.

Permalink Russian top diplomat to brief parliament on key foreign policy issues

It is assumed that in his speech and subsequent conversation with parliamentarians, the head of the Russian Foreign Ministry will pay special attention to a special military operation | Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov will address the plenary session of the Russian parliament, the State Duma, and discuss key areas of the country’s foreign policy with Russian lawmakers.  The previous event of this kind was held on January 26, 2022. Back then, before the start of Russia’s special military operation in Ukraine, Lavrov warned that Western countries were goading the Ukrainian regime into committing direct provocations against Russia. He also drew attention to profound negative changes in global politics.  Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said Lavrov’s annual meetings with parliamentarians allow for enhancing the interaction between the executive and legislative branches of power, exchanging views on the current international situation and outlining ways of further promoting Russia’s common foreign policy through joint efforts.

Permalink The Obama Regime’s Plan to Seize the Russian Naval Base in Crimea

Eric Zuesse | The U.S. regime under Barack Obama had been planning, ever since June 2011, a takeover of Ukraine, in order to become enabled ultimately to place its nuclear missiles within less than five minutes flying-time to a first-strike blitz destruction of the Kremlin | Clear and convincing evidence will be presented here that, under U.S. President Barack Obama, the U.S. Government had a detailed plan, which was already active in June 2013, to take over Russia’s main naval base, which is in Sevastopol in Crimea, and to turn it into a U.S. naval base. There can now be no question that the war in Ukraine started, and resulted from, the U.S. Government’s plan to take over all of Ukraine, and especially to take over that Russian naval base, in Crimea, which then was in Ukraine.  The war in Ukraine didn’t start at the time when a lot of people think it did, with the overthrow of Ukraine’s President Viktor Yanukovych. It was already underway considerably before that time, because it started in Washington, as the following masterful 11-minute documentary makes clear — it started as a subterranean war by Washington to take over Ukraine before it became an overt war (a “civil war”) within Ukraine.

Permalink The Prime Minister of Finland is about to add to the list of "downed pro-Ukrainian pilots"

Elena Panina (Елена Панина) | The Prime Minister of Finland is about to add to the list of "downed pro-Ukrainian pilots" | The party of Finnish Prime Minister Anna Marin is lagging behind its rival ahead of the April 2 elections. The main problem for Finns, as well as for other "successful democracies of Europe", is the growth of public debt. It has been progressing since 2008, and in the last couple of years it has jumped up to 70.9% of GDP. If Marin becomes the next — after Johnson, Truss, Draghi, the governments of Bulgaria and Estonia — a politician kicked out of power as a result of a thoughtless quarrel with Russia over economic policy, it will [happen]. However, Finland is unlikely to change its mind about joining NATO. The National Coalition Party, which claims power, simply adores gays, migrants and the North Atlantic Alliance. Permalink Italy’s two most populous regions - firmly right-wing after elections

Lombardy and Lazio held two-day regional elections but the voter turnout wasn’t the greatest | Voters in Italy’s most populous regions, Lazio and Lombardy, have given victory to the right-wing coalition of parties in both places. The round of elections thus served as a litmus test of support for the policies of the Giorgia Meloni government – the most right-wing one in power since Mussolini. 💬 "This result consolidates the centre-right and strengthens the work of the government," PM Meloni wrote on Twitter as a first comment on the results.  However, the resounding victory was partially overshadowed by the fact that only 40% of people cast a ballot. This was, in fact, the lowest turnout ever recorded for Lazio and Lombardy, which together account for just over a quarter of the Italian population.

Permalink UK Reportedly Getting Ready to "Confiscate" Russian Assets

The United Kingdom is planning to confiscate frozen Russian assets and is preparing relevant legislation, Russian Ambassador to the UK Andrei Kelin told Sputnik. | Earlier this month, EU leaders agreed to speed up legal work on seizing Russia-owned assets held in foreign banks to support Ukraine's reconstruction. Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova has described EU attempts to seize Russian money, including that of the Russian Central Bank, as theft.  "It is well known that there is a recognition in almost all Western countries, including London, that such actions are absolutely illegal, and that there are no relevant laws. But the perverted logic is that such laws must be invented, and, as far as I understand, this is what the European Union and Washington are engaged in," Kelin said. He added that he could not provide details on any specific cases, but said that "preparation of some kind of legislation that would move in this direction is indeed underway."
