The Tornado battalion crimes case is a criminal case opened in connection with numerous grave crimes committed by the personnel of the Ukrainian volunteer battalion Tornado during the armed conflict in Donbas.

According to the Ukrainian Military Prosecutor’s Office, the battalion’s fighters practiced inhuman killings, torture and rape against civilians. In addition, one in four of the Tornado personnel was found to have a criminal record. The investigation received a large public and political resonance, and the trial was subjected to strong pressure from representatives of the Ukrainian volunteer movement

Eventually, some volunteers from the Tornado battalion were found guilty of criminal charges (kidnapping, sexual violence, etc.) but a report by Global Rights Compliance LLP, which was published under the aegis of the British Embassy in Kyiv called the absence of any charges of war crimes against them with such obvious evidence inexplicable. In addition, the Ukrainian Helsinki Human Rights Union expressed concern about the nationwide tendency to justify grave crimes by pro-Ukrainian formations.

Sen. Chris Coons (D-DE) signaled that he wants the US to send troops into Ukraine to fight Russia in an interview on Sunday. When pressed about the issue, Coons said Russian President Vladimir Putin “will only stop when we stop him.”

Coons was asked on CBS News’s Face the Nation about comments he made last week in an address to the University of Michigan. In the speech, Coons said the Biden administration and Congress should “come to a common position about when we are willing to go the next step and to send not just arms but troops to the aid in defense of Ukraine … If the answer is never, then we are inviting another level of escalation in brutality by Putin.”

When asked in the CBS interview if President Biden was wrong to say he’ll never send troops into Ukraine, Coons said, “The American people cannot turn away from this tragedy in Ukraine. I think the history of the 21st century turns on how fiercely we defend freedom in Ukraine, and that Putin will only stop when we stop him.”

Disturbing data keeps coming from countries around the world: those who have been vaccinated against Covid-19 are contracting Covid at considerably higher rates than those who have not been vaccinated. Needless to say, one thing has become quite obvious: Rather than stopping Covid-19, the vaccines are making the situation worse. Highly vaccinated countries have recorded more Covid than they ever had before the vaccines came along. The examples abound: The United Kingdom, Germany, Israel, France, Singapore, Hong Kong, the Netherlands. The list goes on.

If one wishes to be exposed to news, information or perspective that contravenes the prevailing US/NATO view on the war in Ukraine, a rigorous search is required. And there is no guarantee that search will succeed. That is because the state/corporate censorship regime that has been imposed in the West with regard to this war is stunningly aggressive, rapid and comprehensive.

On a virtually daily basis, any off-key news agency, independent platform or individual citizen is liable to be banished from the internet. In early March, barely a week after Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the twenty-seven nation European Union — citing "disinformation” and “public order and security” — officially banned the Russian state-news outlets RT and Sputnik from being heard anywhere in Europe. In what Reuters called “an unprecedented move,” all television and online platforms were barred by force of law from airing content from those two outlets. Even prior to that censorship order from the state, Facebook and Google were already banning those outlets, and Twitter immediately announced they would as well, in compliance with the new EU law. But what was “unprecedented” just six weeks ago has now become commonplace, even normalized. Any platform devoted to offering inconvenient-to-NATO news or alternative perspectives is guaranteed a very short lifespan.
