Permalink Iran’s nuclear ambitions, Syrian war dominate Israel, U.S. talks

PUKE READ: Four years ago U.S. President Barack Obama travelled to Egypt where he tried to assuage widespread fears that America was engaged in a war on Islam. Dennis Ross, who at the time was a national security adviser to Obama, said, “There was a feeling that if we didn’t address that, that would be a continued source of recruitment for terror against the United States.” The U.S. hoped its hand of friendship would calm the region and build trust. Since then the Mideast has erupted in turmoil. Across North Africa from Egypt to Algeria nobody really knows who’s running the show. The Syrian civil war is overflowing its borders raising fears that terrorists could obtain chemical weapons. Iran has been steadily enriching uranium to build what Western countries suspect will be a nuclear bomb. And the Israeli-Palestinian peace process is on ice. So when Obama arrived in Tel Aviv at noon Wednesday to tremendous military fanfare, he entered a very different Middle East, one that is awash in uncertainty and moving towards a nuclear showdown. Obama’s press conference later in the day with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu underscored all of these issues, both men emphasizing not just Israeli security but also the security of the entire region and the world.

Bill Auken: Hands off Syria! - Starting a two-day visit to Israel on Wednesday, US President Barack Obama issued bellicose threats against both Syria and Iran. The visit, which plainly has the character of a US-Israeli war council, makes clear that ten years after the US invasion of Iraq, US imperialism is preparing even greater crimes in the Middle East.

Bill Auken: US, NATO prepare Syria intervention - The top US commander in Europe told a Senate hearing Tuesday that the US military and NATO are drawing up plans for direct military intervention in Syria. The admiral added that US and NATO discussions have included providing “lethal support” to the anti-government militias and using direct military force to impose “no-fly zones” in Syria and enforce “arms embargoes” against the regime of President Bashar al-Assad.

Stephen Lendman: Obama in Israel - "We stand together because peace must come to the Holy Land. Even as we are clear eyed about the difficulties, we will never lose sight of the vision of an Israel at peace with its neighbors." No two nations spurn peace more than America and Israel. They prioritize war. They're partners in crime. They menace humanity. Obama's words ring hollow.
