Permalink A US/Nato air strike in Tripoli has killed the son of Colonel Gadaffi

Saif al-Arab and three of Col Gaddafi's grandchildren died at their villa in the Bab al-Aziziya compound

The Libyan leader himself was in the villa at the time, the spokesman said, but was unharmed. Nato said it had hit a "known command-and-control building" in the area, adding it did not "target individuals". An alliance spokesman, Lt-Gen Charles Bouchard, said "all Nato's targets are military in nature". He added that he was aware of reports that members of Col Gaddafi's family had been killed, but made no further comment.

The BBC's Christian Fraser in Tripoli says that unusually the alliance issued its statement within hours of the strike, well aware of the political implications. China and Russia within the Security Council have concerns that the alliance beyond the mandate of the UN resolution authorising "all necessary measures" to protect civilians. But UK Prime Minister David Cameron said Nato's targeting policy was "in line with the UN resolution". "It is about preventing a loss of civilian life by targeting Gaddafi's war-making machine, so that is obviously tanks and guns, rocket launchers, but also command and control," he told the BBC.

Permalink Israel threatens 'arsenal of measures' in wake of Fatah Hamas pact

Israel has threatened to use an "arsenal of measures" against the Palestinian territories, including withholding £480 million of taxes and subjecting leaders to humiliating border checks in retaliation for the Fatah Hamas pact.

Mahmoud Abbas, the pro-western president of the Palestinian Authority, was accused of siding with terrorists after his secular Fatah party agreed on Wednesday to end a long-running schism with its arch-rival Hamas, the Islamist overlords of the Gaza Strip. Avigdor Lieberman, Israel's foreign minister, said the deal made it "inevitable" that Hamas would take over the West Bank leaving the Jewish state to confront an enemy bent on its destruction on two fronts. Under the terms of the unexpected deal, reached after weeks of secret talks in the Egyptian capital Cairo, Hamas and Fatah, which fought a brief civil war in 2007, will form a provisional government that will oversee the preparation of presidential and parliamentary elections within a year.

Permalink Israeli troops shown posing with Palestinians

A rights group on Monday published new photos of Israeli soldiers posing with a detainee and vandalising a Palestinian home, in images apparently taken during the 2008-2009 Gaza war.

In one picture, a soldier points his assault rifle at the face of a blindfolded detainee and in another an officer is seen spray-painting a Star of David and "Back soon" on what looks to be the wall of a home. Others show soldiers smiling and posing inside what appear to be Palestinian homes, and in one picture two women can be seen preparing food in a kitchen.

Their release comes after a series of photos and videos depicting Palestinian prisoners have gone public after being posted on social network sites in a practice the military has said it is trying to halt. The latest images were acquired by Breaking the Silence, a group of veteran Israeli combat soldiers who collect testimonies and photos of troops who have served in the occupied territories. Yehuda Shaul, a founding member, declined to reveal the source of the photos, but said the group has received dozens of similar pictures that point to a widespread phenomenon.

Permalink 10 killed, 29 wounded in Iraq attacks

At least 10 people were killed and 29 others wounded Friday in separate insurgent attacks across Iraq, police sources said.

Three people were killed and 28 others, including eight policemen, were wounded when three roadside bombs targeting a police patrol exploded in the Zaafaraniya area in southeast Baghdad, a police source told Xinhua. Two police cars and several civilian cars were damaged in the attacks, he added. In the eastern province of Diyala, unidentified gunmen stormed a house Friday morning in the area of Buhriz, eight km south of provincial capital city Baquba. They opened fire with automatic weapons on four brothers who lived in the house, killing three of them and seriously wounding the fourth. According to a local police source, the four brothers were working in the security forces.

Gunmen also stormed the house of Sheikh Bashir Mutlaq Salah, an imam of the Sunni mosque in the village of Salem Abdul Hameed, 60 km north of Baquba. The attackers killed Sheikh Salah along with his wife and eight- year-old daughter, the source said, adding that the security forces had sealed off the scene and began a raid in search of the perpetrators. In another incident, unidentified gunmen assassinated a lieutenant colonel in the Iraqi army Friday morning with silenced weapons near his home in the Ghazaliya area in west Baghdad.
