Permalink Larry Wilkerson: Congress’s ‘remarkable’ reaction to Netanyahu might be explained by money

Larry Wilkerson, a former chief of staff to then-Secretary of State Colin Powell, appeared on The Real News to discuss Congress’s reaction.

“Even the obsequiousness of the United States Congress from time to time during States of the Union or other type speeches doesn’t come anywhere near this” Wilkerson marveled. “This was a refutation, really, of the standing policy position of the sitting president of the United States by the separate and equal branch of government, the Congress, with a foreign leader being the center pole around which they coalesced this opposition. It’s really quite remarkable.” When asked what he thought might explain the reaction, Wilkerson replied, “It’s a mystery to me, except money. That’s the only answer I can come up with. … Congressmen and women … understand what a powerful entity in America is the lobby group AIPAC for Israel, and that generates a lot of coin, a lot of money.”

KABUL, Afghanistan — Afghan officials said Sunday that a NATO airstrike targeting Taliban fighters killed 14 civilians, all of them women and children, in the southern province of Helmand on Saturday night.

Witnesses said an unknown number of bombs fell around 11 p.m., landing on two family compounds in the Salam Bazaar area of Nawzad district, a small farming community about 50 miles north of Lashkar Gah, the provincial capital. Five girls, seven boys and two women were killed as they slept, the provincial governor’s office said in a statement. Another six people were wounded. Grieving friends and relatives drove through the night transporting eight bodies to the provincial hospital in Lashkar Gah, a resident of the village, Haji Janan, said. The other bodies remained buried under the rubble as villagers tried to dig them out, he said. The governor’s office released photographs of men carrying the dusty, bruised bodies of dead children swaddled in sheets into the hospital.

“The office of the provincial governor strongly condemns this deep sorrow incident,” the office said in an English version of its statement. The statement also requested NATO to stop “air strikes that result in civilian casualties.”

Permalink Hosni Mubarak fined £20 million for shutting down internet

An Egyptian court has fined ousted President Hosni Mubarak and two former officials 540 million Egyptian pounds (£55 million) for cutting off mobile and internet services during January protests.

The administrative court fined Mr Mubarak £20 million; former Prime Minister Ahmed Nazif £4 million, and former interior minister Habib al-Adly £30 million for their damage to the national economy, a court source said. This was the first court ruling to be made against Mr Mubarak since he was ousted on February 11. Mr Mubarak faces more serious charges, including ordering the killing of protesters, a charge which could carry the death penalty. His two sons Alaa and Gamal, who many had believed was being groomed by his father to replace him, were also referred to the criminal court on a range of charges. The crimes listed by the prosecutor included "intentional murder, attempted killing of some demonstrators ... misuse of influence and deliberately wasting public funds and unlawfully making private financial gains and profits," the statement said.

Permalink Daniel Ellsberg: “Secrets ... Can Be Kept Reliably ... For Decades … Even Though They Are Known to THOUSANDS of Insiders”

Judges, prosecutors and journalists all know that collusion happens every day. As I noted last year:

Bernie Madoff's Ponzi scheme was a conspiracy. The heads of Enron were found guilty of conspiracy, as was the head of Adelphia. Numerous lower-level government officials have been found guilty of conspiracy. See this, this, this, this and this. Time Magazine's financial columnist Justin Fox writes:

Some financial market conspiracies are real ...

Most good investigative reporters are conspiracy theorists, by the way.

Indeed, conspiracies are so common that judges are trained to look at conspiracy allegations as just another legal claim to be disproven or proven by the evidence.

Permalink Gaddafi’s wife breaks silence, speaks to CNN – slams NATO war crimes, ‘life has no value’ - Video

CNN reporter Nima Elbagir has purportedly spoken to Safia Gaddafi, wife of Muammar Gaddafi in what CNN claims is the first time she has spoken to foreign or domestic media. The interview was arranged by CNN, through Safia’s office manager.

Safia decided to come forward due to the NATO murder of her son Saif Al-Arab, along with 3 of Gaddafi’s grandchildren, all of whom were under the age of 12. This heinous war crime has been brushed under the carpet by the contrived bin Laden fairy tale, prompting Safia to speak out. In the emotional interview Safia speaks of NATO’s targeting of civilians, the murder of her son and his children, and how life ‘has no value anymore’. Video and transcript below.
