Permalink Arctic Nation Summit in Greenland

Arctic nations held a summit in Nuuk, the capital of Greenland, on Thursday. Their discussions centered around responsible exploration of the Arctic as fast-melting ice and snow open access to rich mineral and petroleum resources.

The Arctic Council, made up of eight countries that surround the Arctic and representatives of indigenous Arctic peoples, signed a deal to split up search-and-rescue responsibilities. The deal in Greenland is the council's first binding agreement. Officials say it could be a model for future pacts on more contentious issues, including energy exploration and development. The region is estimated to hold as much as 25 per cent of the world's undiscovered oil and gas reserves.

Permalink Europe moves to end passport-free travel in migrant row

European interior ministers agree to 'radical revision' of Schengen amid fears of a flood of migrants from north Africa.

European nations moved to reverse decades of unfettered travel across the continent when a majority of EU governments agreed the need to reinstate national passport controls amid fears of a flood of immigrants fleeing the upheaval in north Africa. In a serious blow to one of the cornerstones of a united, integrated Europe, EU interior ministers embarked on a radical revision of the passport-free travel regime known as the Schengen system to allow the 26 participating governments to restore border controls. They also agreed to combat immigration by pressing for "readmission accords" with countries in the Middle East and north Africa to send refugees back to where they came from. The policy shift was pushed by France and Italy, who have been feuding and panicking in recent weeks over a small influx of refugees from Tunisia. But 15 of the 22 EU states which had signed up to Schengen supported the move, with only four resisting, according to officials and diplomats present.

Permalink Nakba Day commemorations begin

Thousands of Palestinians have marched in West Bank towns ahead of the “Nakba Day” which marks the 63rd anniversary of evicting Palestinians from their homes by Israelis.

Marchers in Beit Lahm (Bethlehem) held Palestinian flags and a giant key symbolic of their optimism to return home. Meanwhile, in Gaza City, hundreds of children took part in a march while holding placards with the names of the villages and towns forcefully taken over by Israeli occuppiers in 1948. Palestinians refer to May 15, 1948 as the “Nakba Day” or catastrophe. In that year, Israeli forces displaced some 700,000 Palestinians, forcing them to flee to different neighboring countries. The soldiers wiped nearly 500 Palestinian villages and towns off the map, leaving an estimated total of 4.7 million Palestinian refugees dreaming of an eventual return to their homeland more than six decades later. Meanwhile, organizers have urged mass street presence on Friday and Saturday and have said that “peaceful marches will be held to demand our natural right of return” to the Palestinian homeland.

However, Israel's Public Security Minister Yitzhak Aharonovitch said on Thursday that some Muslims would be denied entry to Al-Aqsa mosque compound on Friday when Palestinians begin mourning the creation of Israel, Ynetnews reported. Al-Quds (Jerusalem) district police spokesman Shmulik Ben Rubi said that access would be restricted to blue Israeli identity paper-holders, men aged over 45 and women.

RAMALLAH (Ma'an) -- As Palestinians prepare to mark Nakba Day, statisticians released figures Thursday showing the world-wide Palestinian population is eight times that of 1948, the period commemorated Sunday.

The Nakba, or catastrophe, refers to fighting which saw an estimated 700,000 Palestinians were expelled from or fled their homes in fighting that would lead to the establishment of the state of Israel. The population that year was 1.4 million, the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics said, while at the end of 2010 it was estimated at 11 million globally, and 5.5 million in Israel, the West Bank and Gaza, while 5.7 million Jews reside in the area. At current growth rates, the bureau said, Jewish and Palestinian populations are predicted to equal at 6.1 million at end of 2014, and reach 7.2 million Palestinians and 6.7 million Jews at the end of 2020.

Permalink Israel Isolated: US-backed revolt backfires as Fatah, Hamas join forces

The revolution in Egypt may be over, but the shift it brought about in the region's geopolitics continues. The ousting of President Mubarak made it possible for the country to broker an historic reconciliation deal between two Palestinian fractions - Fatah and Hamas. But that's proving worring for Israel, and as Paula Slier reports - there's irony in how the U.S.-backed revolution has backfired for its long time ally.

Permalink Bahrainis to mark Defense Day protest

A Bahraini revolutionary movement has called on all people in the Persian Gulf island nation to participate in the “Day of Sacred Defense” protest rallies following Friday prayers.

In a newly released letter, activists of Bahrain's 14th of February revolutionary movement urged Bahrainis to fight back if they are attacked by regime forces. The demonstrations, due to take place after Friday prayers, will mark a new phase in the ongoing revolution to oust the ruling al-Khalifa family, the letter read. The activists say the Bahraini people will no longer tolerate any more nightly raids by Saudi-backed Bahraini forces, calling for the boycott of all government and Saudi businesses.

Permalink Protesters, police clash in Athens demonstration

Greek workers and youth took to the streets of Athens once again on Wednesday to protest a new round of austerity measures to be introduced by the social-democratic (PASOK) government of Prime Minister George Papandreou. The demonstration was accompanied by the second general strike to be held this year and the tenth since the outbreak of the international finance crisis in 2008.

The event expressed both the overwhelming popular hostility to Papandreou’s cuts, and growing mistrust of the policies of the Greek unions and their political supporters. Controlled by PASOK, the main union federations have cynically called one-day strikes to let off steam, while they negotiated the cuts with Papandreou.
