Permalink Anti-Government Protests Erupt in Georgia

The police clashed with anti-government protesters in Georgia on Sunday, at one point firing tear gas and rubber bullets, as hundreds of demonstrators gathered in the capital of the former Soviet republic to demand the ouster of President Mikhail Saakashvili.

The protesters, some carrying clubs and with their faces covered by masks, gathered at the headquarters of Georgia’s public television channel in the capital Tbilisi. About 2,000 people attended the rally, officials said, small by Georgian standards. They accused Mr. Saakashvili of stifling pro-Western democratic reforms promised when he came to power in a bloodless coup in 2003. They also expressed anger at enduring poverty and unemployment. Though the demonstration was largely peaceful, about a dozen protesters attacked a police cruiser with sticks early Sunday morning, forcing police to retaliate, said Shota Utiashvili, a spokesman for the Interior Ministry. Police "had to" use a small amount of tear gas and rubber bullets against a small number of demonstrators, Mr. Utiashvili said. He said two people were arrested, and five people, including the three police officers in the car, suffered minor injuries.

Mr. Netanyahu’s furious reaction to what many administration officials viewed as a modest compromise from the more dramatic all-encompassing American peace plan that some of Mr. Obama’s advisers had been advocating, infuriated the White House. In particular, administration officials were angry by Mr. Netanyahu’s lecturing tone during statements the two leaders gave on Friday. American officials were also irritated by Mr. Netanyahu statement directly after Mr. Obama’s speech that used the phrase “expects to hear” in saying that Mr. Netanyahu expected to hear certain assurances from Mr. Obama during their meeting. “That was Bibi over the top,” an administration official said Saturday, referring to Mr. Netanyahu. “That’s not how you address the president of the United States.”

Permalink Israel "approves" nearly 300 settlements

Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak has approved the construction of 294 new illegal Jewish settler units in the occupied Palestinian land.

The settlements are to go up in the Beitar Ilit settlement in the occupied West Bank, AFP reported on Sunday. The Israeli regime occupied the West Bank alongside the other Palestinian territory of East al-Quds (Jerusalem) in 1967 and later annexed both. The international community has refused to recognize neither the capture nor the annexation. The United Nations and the European Union call the settlements illegal as they are constructed on the occupied territories. The UN also considers the settlement expansion to be illegal under the international law.

U.S. President Barack Obama says he would order another covert military raid like that which killed Osama bin Laden if it was necessary to stop "terrorist attacks."

Obama told the BBC in an interview broadcast Sunday that "we are very respectful of the sovereignty of Pakistan," but "our job is to secure the United States."

Permalink More victims buried in tense Syria

More victims buried in tense Syria - "Syrians prepared for more angry funerals on Sunday after security forces gunned down at least five mourners during burials for anti-government protesters killed the previous day in the third largest city Homs".

Funerals in Homs, which is turning into a focal point in the nine-week uprising against the regime of President Bashar al-Assad, were taking place amid mounting calls by the international community for a stop to the violence. Those killed on Saturday -- at least five according to activists -- were marching during the funeral procession of several people who were among 44 killed during protests that swept the country on Friday. "Tens of thousands had accompanied the funeral procession from the city's main mosque to Tal al-Nasr cemetery," an activist told AFP by telephone. "The shooting began as people were coming out of the cemetery" in Homs.
