Permalink EU to rush ammunition to Ukraine from "European Peace Facility"

The EU is looking to allocate an additional one billion euros for urgently needed ammunition for Ukraine as Kyiv burns through vast numbers of shells | In a bid to speed up ammunition to Ukraine, EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell is proposing using an additional one billion euros ($1.07 billion) in joint funds to get member states to dig into their stockpiles. The money would come from the bloc’s European Peace Facility, which has already dedicated 3.6 billion euros towards arming Ukraine since the start of the invasion last February, the document circulated to EU states said.

Permalink CIA Secretly ‘Hunting’ Assange Activists, Bombshell Report Suggests

From late-night break-ins, to secretly installing devices to remotely monitor computer activity, to death threats and bizarre mind games meant to disorient and demoralize their targets, it seems little is off-limits when it comes to the push to neutralize the support network that’s cropped up around Assange since his imprisonment. | Activists, lawyers and journalists linked to WikiLeaks editor Julian Assange are being subjected to extensive surveillance and intimidation, an explosive new report has detailed.  Individuals have been hacked, tracked, burglarized, threatened with death, and thrown in jails for years on dubious charges. And while the identity of the perpetrators has yet to be conclusively proven, victims say it’s clear who’s behind the campaign of harassment and spying: the Central Intelligence Agency.

Permalink Hungarian Foreign Ministry: Ceasefire in Ukraine Red Line for the EU

The EU has made it clear that it considers a ceasefire in Ukraine to be a red line and will not agree to it, Hungarian Foreign Ministry Secretary of State Tamas Menczer said. 💬 "Even knowing that Brussels represents the position of the 'party of war', we were still shocked... when we, the Hungarians, suggested that the documents on the occasion of the anniversary of the start...[of Russia's special military operation] contain calls for an immediate ceasefire and the start of talks, they were rejected in each case," Menczer told Kossuth Radio. He said Brussels 💬 "not aloud, and sometimes even aloud, made it clear that the immediate cessation of the war is a red line, they do not accept this, because they think the war must be continued until Ukraine wins." Menсzer said Hungary supports peace talks and believes there can be no winner in the conflict. Since the beginning of the conflict, Hungary has consistently opposed sanctions on Russian energy carriers and weapons supplies to Ukraine. In early March last year, the Hungarian parliament issued a decree prohibiting arms supply to Ukraine from Hungarian territory.

Permalink Finland Starts Building Costly, Symbolic Fence on Russian Border

At best, the partial fencing will only serve up to 20 percent of Finland's border with Russia, but it will still be a danger for wildlife and a drain on taxpayers. | Finland has started its eastern border fence project, a purely symbolic gesture, ostensibly to "protect" itself from Russia with barbed wire.  The forest clearance, which has already started, will be followed by road construction and installation of a three-meter fence, followed by the construction of a technical surveillance system. At present, work is underway on a three-kilometer fence stretching from Pelkola near the Imatra border crossing point. It is expected to be completed by the end of June.  Fence parts designated as key target areas will be built between 2023 and 2025. These include border crossing points with surrounding areas, and other areas considered important. So far, funding has been obtained for a barrier fence of approximately 70 kilometres in south-east Finland, North Karelia, Kainuu and Lapland.

Permalink British pet cats faced extermination risk

Animals were a suspected Covid-19 infection threat in the early days of the outbreak | UK officials considered asking citizens to exterminate their pet cats near the start of the coronavirus pandemic as a novel way to ‘flatten the curve,’ a former minister has said, noting that the government was not sure whether felines were playing a role in the health crisis.  Speaking in an interview on Wednesday, ex-Deputy Health Minister Lord James Bethell described the initial response to Covid-19 by government agencies, saying 💬 “we shouldn’t forget… how little we understood about this disease.”  Other nations, including Poland and Denmark, were also concerned about animal-borne transmission, with the latter country ordering a cull of a mink population thought to be carrying the virus. Officials later acknowledged the order was illegal, with Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen apologizing for the decision.

Permalink European legislators get money from US military companies — Russian MFA

"It is noteworthy that the focus is on the US military-industrial complex (not even European), which is the embodiment of the term 'dealers in death'," Maria Zakharova said | The European parliament’s members receive money from US military companies, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on her Telegram channel on Tuesday. 💬 "Corruption in the European Parliament thrives. EUObserver journalists have discovered that some MEPs received pensions, for example, from US corporations Raytheon, Honeywell International and Textron Inc - military companies that develop, produce and sell, among other items, cluster munitions. It is noteworthy that the focus is on the US military-industrial complex (not even European), which is the embodiment of the term ‘dealers in death’. Moreover, as it has turned out, MEPs are sponsored with money from the sale of precisely those types of weapons which EU member-states seek ban. For some reason they do not refuse to take the money," Zakharova [said].

Permalink Greta Thunberg arrested in Norway: Protests Against Wind Farm

Corriere della Sera | The activist was taken away by police after several days of occupation of the Norwegian Ministry of Energy Policy | Greta Thunberg was arrested yesterday (Tuesday 28 February) in Norway because, together with Sami (people of Lapland) activists, she had been occupying the Ministry of Energy Policy in Oslo since Thursday. The activist was protesting together with indigenous people against the construction of the Fosen wind farm.  Thunberg, together with the other activists, had blocked the entrance to the Norwegian Ministry of Energy to demand compliance with the 2021 final ruling for the dismantling of the wind turbines, which gives the Sami people a right. 'There is no ecological transition without human rights'. The turbines, however, are still there, and according to the environmentalist and Lapp activists, the wind farm would damage the reindeer herds, the primary source of livelihood for the indigenous people in the north-west of Norway.  The police operation was triggered in the night, at around 2.30 a.m., when the police removed a dozen protesters by weight. Thunberg, along with the others, was taken to the barracks for a few hours before being released. (Translation with: DeepL.com)

Permalink When did believing in biology become a thoughtcrime?

Women’s rights campaigners like Kellie-Jay Keen are being questioned by police for offending trans activists. | [Why did] officers from Sussex Police took a 300-mile round journey from the south coast to the rural town of Trowbridge in Wiltshire last week? The trip was taken to investigate some apparently hurty words spoken by Kellie-Jay Keen – a women’s rights campaigner and founder of Standing for Women (SfW). The focal point of her SfW campaign is reminding people that the dictionary definition of ‘woman’ is ‘adult human female’. This statement of biological fact is deeply offensive to men who like to pretend they’re women and to their fanatical enablers.  A week after the rally, Keen was informed by an officer that ‘somebody has made an allegation… about a hate crime’. The officer made it clear that should Keen not attend a voluntary interview at the police station, she would be arrested. With the threat of being led away from her family home in handcuffs hanging over her, Keen consented to be questioned under caution.
