Permalink Tell Congress: Don't Attack Syria

Alan Grayson: We have already delayed an attack on Syria, and forced the President to ask Congress for authorization. The next step in preventing war is to get Congress to deny permission for war. Add your name to this petition, and I will deliver it to your Member of Congress. Your voice matters.

Petition: "The Administration is considering intervening in the Syrian civil war. We oppose this. There's no vital national security involved. We are not the world’s policeman, nor its judge and jury. Our own needs in America are great, and they come first. The death of civilians is always regrettable, and civil war is regrettable, but no Americans have been attacked, and no American allies have been attacked. The British Parliament understandably has voted not to join in any attack. Notably, defense contractor Raytheon's stock is up 20% in the last 60 days. It seems that nobody wants US intervention in Syria except the military-industrial complex. I oppose US military intervention in Syria. Join me."

Permalink Swedish Reporter Asks Obama if Nobel Peace Prize Presents ‘Dilemma’ When Planning Syria Attack...

President Barack Obama flew to Sweden on Wednesday for a diplomatic meeting ahead of a two-day G20 summit in St. Petersburg, Russia. Obama held a wide-ranging press conference in Sweden relating to the White House’s effort to build support for a strike on Syria in the wake of that government’s use of chemical weapons on civilians. One Swedish reporter cornered Obama on the contradictions contained in the fact that a Nobel Peace Prize winner is planning to launch his second war against a sovereign nation. “I was wondering,” the reporter began, “could you describe the dilemma to being a Nobel Peace Prize winner and getting ready to attack Syria?”

Permalink Serious Doubts Over Administration’s Syria "Proof"

While the Obama Administration continues to present its collection of circumstantial "evidence" [supplied by Mossad] as incontrovertible “proof” of the Assad government’s guilt in the Jobra Incident, experts continue to say that the case if very weak, particularly in the absence of UN data.
The UN report could be weeks away, and the administration has been condemning it as “too late,” mostly because they want to start the war quickly and not wait for pesky “proof” that might disprove their allegations and ruin their war plans.
The “too late” claim has been repudiated by UN officials, who noted that Jobra is rare in how quick the UN was able to reach the site of the putative attack. Experts say evidence could be collected on real chemical weapons attacks years after the strike, and they got in just days later.

Permalink Chomsky: Syria Strike Would Be 'War Crime' With Or Without Congressional Sign-Off

A U.S.-led attack on Syria without United Nations support would be a war crime regardless of congressional approval, Noam Chomsky, the antiwar activist and author, said in response to President Barack Obama's announcement that he would seek Hill approval. "As international support for Obama’s decision to attack Syria has collapsed, along with the credibility of government claims, the administration has fallen back on a standard pretext for war crimes when all else fails: the credibility of the threats of the self-designated policeman of the world," Chomsky told HuffPost in an email.

Permalink Snowden Document: NSA Spied On Al Jazeera Communications

[The NSA] hacked into Al Jazeera's internal communications system, according to documents from former NSA contractor and whistleblower Edward Snowden that have been seen by SPIEGEL. One such document, dated March 23, 2006, reveals that the NSA's Network Analysis Center managed to access and read communication by "interesting targets" that was specially protected by the news organization. The information also shows that the NSA officials were not satisfied with Al Jazeera's language analysis. In addition to cracking the airline reservation services for Russian airline Aeroflot, accessing "Al Jazeera broadcasting internal communication" was listed as a "notable success," the document shows. The NSA said these selected targets had "high potential as sources of intelligence."
