Permalink Kerry Pushes Syria War, Claiming Evidence ‘Clear’

Doctors Without Borders Said 355 Dead, Kerry Says 1,429. As everyone else in the world collectively catches a little bit of sanity with respect to the US notion of attacking Syria, the Obama Administration is still going full steam ahead toward the strikes, even though at this point the attacks will be coming without much of anything in the way of international support, and with polls still showing solid American opposition to the war. Secretary of State John Kerry, leading the charge for war in Syria for months, is continuing to take the helm in pushing the case in speeches, not so much providing evidence for their allegations but reiterating the claims and insisting that the evidence is “clear.”

Bill van Auken: US on brink of launching war against Syria based on lies While both Obama and Kerry indicated that no decision has yet been taken in relation to military action against Syria, this, like everything else put out by the administration, is patently false. The US Navy has positioned a fifth warship in the Mediterranean, while Air Force units are being beefed up at the US base in Qatar for a military assault that is planned and imminent. A possible target date is September 5, with a New Moon—the same conditions chosen for launching “shock and awe” against Iraq more than a decade ago. The entire operation is being prepared in contempt of international law, democratic processes and American public opinion. This was made abundantly clear in the presentation Kerry delivered from the State Department Friday afternoon.

Permalink Obama to seek Congress vote on Syria military action

US President Barack Obama says he is to seek Congressional authorisation for military operations against Syria. Mr Obama said the US should take action in Syria, but it was important to have a debate and vote in Congress, which reconvenes on 9 September. The US says its intelligence reports indicate the Syrian government carried out chemical weapons attacks on 21 August in which 1,429 people died. The Syrian government denies it was behind the attacks and blames rebels. UN inspectors have now left Syria with samples from site visits, which will go to laboratories in Europe for testing. Mr Obama said the operation would be limited in duration and strong to deter future chemical attacks. He said the military operation could happen tomorrow, next week or in the near future.

Finian Cunningham: US revealed as enemy of the world - The United States of America stands exposed in the eyes of the entire world as the number-one terrorist threat to the future of humanity. Many have known this fact already, but now it is universally clear. As the US prepares to launch an overt war on Syria (the covert war has been raging for 30 months), the vast majority of humanity can finally see through all its decades of pretense and conceit as the world’s model of democracy and international law. And what they see is the ugly opposite. The US is a terrorist state that holds international law, democracy and human rights in utter contempt. It is ready, as it always has been, to kill countless civilians for its selfish political ambitions. That is the conventional definition of “terrorism”. Syria’s President Bashar al-Assad made a profound point recently when he said that his country has faced aggression for more than two years, but only now is the real enemy revealing itself - the US and its minions. But the US terrorist state is not just being called out over Syria. It is being revealed as the enemy to the entire world.

Permalink Obama Hypes Case for War, But Won’t Talk Strategy

Officials Irked as Pentagon Faults Lack of Planning Secretary of State John Kerry, and then Obama not long after he finished, publicly hyped their “common sense” case for attacking Syria, insisting they have an unassailable case for attack that no one (except virtually the whole rest of the world) could disagree with. But what’s the strategy? That’s where it gets tricky, as the administration lays out a plan of attack that seems incredibly vague at best and in many ways absurdly naive. Officials are content to start lobbing missiles into Syria seemingly just for the heck of it, underscoring that they aren’t planning to accomplish anything on the ground with their strikes except for some sort of explosive-based rebuke of President Assad.

Permalink Russian Envoy: Syria Can Resist US Attack

Marlene Khalifeh Translated from As-Safir (Lebanon) Perhaps this week’s “star announcement” was the statement by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on Monday, Aug. 26, when he said that Russia will not react militarily to a US military intervention in Syria. In Beirut, Zasypkin supported Lavrov’s position and was surprised that some thought that Russia was willing to go to war with the United States and destabilize the world for many years, as happened during the Cold War. He reiterated his country’s positions, which reject bypassing the UN Security Council. He expects that the new US “adventure” will expand the conflict in the region, as the United States did in Iraq and Libya. Zasypkin seemed certain about the Syrian army’s superiority relative to the opposition and, alluding to Iran, he warned about how the Syrian regime’s allies will react to a US strike. Zasypkin accused the “Syrian opposition’s gunmen” of using poison gas against civilians, and he advised the Lebanese people, under these circumstances, to form a government that groups all sides and that doesn’t exclude any party that is represented in the Lebanese parliament.

Permalink U.S. spy agencies mounted 231 offensive cyber-operations in 2011, documents show

U.S. intelligence services carried out 231 offensive cyber-operations in 2011, the leading edge of a clandestine campaign that embraces the Internet as a theater of spying, sabotage and war, according to top-secret documents obtained by The Washington Post. That disclosure, in a classified intelligence budget provided by NSA leaker Edward Snowden, provides new evidence that the Obama administration's growing ranks of cyberwarriors infiltrate and disrupt foreign computer networks. Additionally, under an extensive effort code-named GENIE, U.S. computer specialists break into foreign networks so that they can be put under surreptitious U.S. control. Budget documents say the $652 million project has placed "covert implants," sophisticated malware transmitted from far away, in computers, routers and firewalls on tens of thousands of machines every year, with plans to expand those numbers into the millions.

Permalink The parody shirt the NSA doesn't want you to wear

Two days after the world learned the National Security Agency logs practically every American phone call, the agency had started cracking down on entrepreneurs who made fun of it.
That's according to Dan McCall, founder of politically themed T-shirt company Liberty Maniacs.
On June 5, the Guardian posted the first of many documents, leaked by former contractor Edward Snowden, that detail NSA's spy practices. Two days later, McCall put up a handful of T-shirts and bumper stickers for sale on the custom goods marketplace Zazzle, which distributes most of Liberty Maniacs' goods. Each of those items had the NSA logo, plus a common joke as a slogan: "The only part of the government that actually listens."
"Within an hour or two," as McCall told the Daily Dot, Zazzle emailed him to say the shirt had been removed from the Zazzle site.

The announcement of the ban appeared on Reddit at around 12:30 GMT Thursday, with the forum's leading moderator posting: "RT.com has been banned for spam and vote manipulation." It was soon followed by another message, saying that “brigading the thread, downvoting, and crying aren't going to change it, sorry.” RT immediately contacted the moderators of the /r/news section, as well as Reddit's press office, to request an explanation. Dear Mr. Foxman, [...] You are right in saying that I have attacked The Israeli Governments’ policies in Gaza, the West Bank, and in Israel itself. You are wrong in your conclusion that my criticism of the policies of the Government of Israel requires the A.D.L. to “reexamine your attitude towards Jews”. I have no attitude towards Jews. I do not group or categorise human beings in that way. I know many people who are Jewish, I have many very close friends who are Jewish, my two Grandsons are Jewish. I also have many friends who are not Jewish, who are Christian, Moslem, Buddhist, Agnostic, whatever, they are my friends, and I love them, their faith or lack of it is irrelevant to me. I do however have an antipathy to racism and bigotry, I have no time for racists or bigots[...]. Yours sincerely, Roger Waters

Permalink Jewish Press Unleash Hatred against Britain

The Jewish Times of Israel editor, veteran Zionist Supremacist and agent David Horovitz, has shown the world the true nature of Zionist Supremacism in a hatred-filled editorial attacking “perfidious Albion” for daring not to believe Jewish propaganda about Syria. In an editorial titled “Perfidious Albion hands murderous Assad a spectacular victory,” Horovitz asserted that “ a perfect storm of British ineptitude and gutlessness sent the wrong message to the butcher of Damascus, and left Israel more certain than ever that it can only rely on itself.” Horovitz’s hatred of the country he was born in, and its native people, drips from the wording in his editorial. He says that the British decision not to immediately attack Syria just because the Zionists said they should, was the result of “political ineptitude, short-sighted expediency, and gutlessness.” Hortovitz’s own newspaper earlier confirmed that “Israeli intelligence” was the single source for the “evidence” about the claimed chemical attack. The outpouring of hatred against Britain by Horovitz accurately reflects Jewish Supremacist attitudes towards non-Jews: as long as the latter do Jewish bidding, they are “righteous Gentiles,” but as soon as they dare question their Master’s Voice, they are “perfidious” and “unreliable.”

Permalink Bandar, Zionist Lobby Partnering to Maneuver Obama into Prolonged War with Syria

Franklin Lamb: The Bandar-Zionist lobby collaboration, currently the cocktail party talk of many in Washington, is not a case of strange bedfellows given three decades of mutual cooperation which started Bandar, Zionist lobbyduring Prince Bandar’s long tenure as Saudi ambassador in Washington. Based in Washington, but with a palace out west and up north, Bandar developed almost familial relationships with five presidents and their key advisers. His voice was one of the shrillest urging the United States to invade Iraq in 2003. In the 1980s, Prince Bandar was deeply involved in the Iran-Contra scandal in Nicaragua and it his intelligence agency that first alerted Western allies to the alleged use of sarin gas by the Syrian regime in February. Bandar has reportedly for months been focused exclusively on garnering international support, including arms and training, for Syrian rebel factions in pursuit of the eventual toppling of President Bashar al-Assad.

Pepe Escobar: ‘War on chemical weapons’: Obama traps himself into Syrian combat A proverbial, anonymous “senior administration official” [...] stressed the “desire to get it done before the president leaves for Russia next week.” That’s it; we bomb a country like dialing a pizza delivery, and then we go to a G20 summit with the world’s emerging powers hosted by no less than Russia’s president, Vladimir Putin. [...] I’m not making this up. This is the core of White House spokesman Jay Carney’s message, when he said, in faultless Newspeak: “The options that are being considered do not contain within them a regime change focus.” So the administration of “constitutional lawyer” Barack Obama is mulling how to attack Syria, bypassing the UN Security Council – which will veto, via Russia and China, the new resolution proposed by the UK; bypassing always-docile NATO; and with 91 percent of Americans against it, just to send an (explosive) political message. And all because a US president was foolish enough to get trapped in his own rhetoric.

Permalink 30 May 2013: Police foil al-Nusra bomb attack planned for Adana

Seven members of Syria's militant al-Nusra group were detained on Wednesday after police found sarin gas, which was reportedly going to be used in a bomb attack, during a search of the suspects' homes, Turkish media have reported. Newspapers claimed on Thursday that two kilograms of sarin gas, which is usually used for making bombs and was banned by the UN in 1991, had been found in the homes of suspects detained in the southern provinces of Adana and Mersin. Twelve suspects were caught by the police on Monday. The reports claimed that the al-Nusra members had been planning a bomb attack for Thursday in Adana but that the attack was averted when the police caught the suspects. Along with the sarin gas, the police seized a number of handguns, grenades, bullets and documents during their search. Five of the suspects were released later on Thursday.

Permalink UK sends jets to Cyprus in what it insists is a "defensive move"

Britain's Prime Minster says it is “unthinkable" that Britain would launch military action against Syria if there was strong opposition at the United Nations Security Council, as British jets are deployed to Cyprus.
Prime Minister David Cameron told the House of Commons in a debate on Syria on Thursday that Britain would not enter into military action until the UN inspectors report back, until MPs take a second vote and until there is backing from the Security Council in the United Nations.
The PM also said, however, that it was inconceivable that Britain should do nothing in the face of the use of chemical weapons. Cameron said that while there wasn’t a “smoking gun” of evidence that Assad had used chemical weapons, the evidence was substantial. Supporting military action was a judgment call, he said.

Chris Marsden & Julie Hyland: British parliament votes down Syria action as US presses ahead with strike plans In a stunning setback for the Conservative-Liberal Democrat coalition government of Prime Minister David Cameron and the Obama administration in the US, Britain’s MPs voted down a government attempt to secure agreement in principle for military intervention in Syria. Cameron is deeply wounded, his future as Conservative Party leader uncertain. As for the Obama administration and its European allies, their war drive against Syria has been discredited and exposed as a criminal conspiracy hatched in the recesses of the CIA, MI5, Mossad, and other intelligence agencies. They seized upon a chemical attack in Ghouta most likely carried out by the US-backed insurgents themselves as a casus belli—the opportunity to activate a plan for regime change in Syria aimed at isolating Iran and securing US hegemony over the oil riches of the Middle East.

Permalink Obama: as a candidate - as a president...

In 2008, President Obama, when he was a candidate for President, had this question-and-answer exchange with the Boston Globe:

"Q. In what circumstances, if any, would the president have constitutional authority to bomb Iran without seeking a use-of-force authorization from Congress? (Specifically, what about the strategic bombing of suspected nuclear sites — a situation that does not involve stopping an IMMINENT threat?)
"OBAMA: The President does not have power under the Constitution to unilaterally authorize a military attack in a situation that does not involve stopping an actual or imminent threat to the nation. "As Commander-in-Chief, the President does have a duty to protect and defend the United States. In instances of self-defense, the President would be within his constitutional authority to act before advising Congress or seeking its consent." Given that not even the most ardent interventionists for Syria contend that the bombing is necessary for US national security, how can a military attack on Syria without Congressional approval possibly be reconciled with that position?

Permalink British MPs reject military intervention in Syria - Video

Any possibility of British involvement in a military campaign in Syria has been effectively ruled out after British lawmakers voted down the prospect in parliament, costing the US the nation’s closest ally in a potential strike. By a 285 to 272 margin British MPs rejected the government’s motion to support in principle military action against Syria. A second vote was due to be held on committing to action following the report by United Nations weapons inspectors, who are currently investigating claims that President Bashar Assad used chemical weapons on civilians.

Paul Craig Roberts: UPDATE AUGUST 29 The British Parliament has rejected British military intervention in Syria. The US puppet, Cameron, who serves as Prime Minister was forced to admit that he had no evidence that Assad had used chemical weapons, and Parliament said, no evidence, no war. It is unlikely the French will go along without the British, so this leaves Obama all alone with Israel. If Washington goes ahead with the strike, Obama will be branded with the War Criminal moniker. The decisive action by Parliament shames the cowardly US Congress.

Permalink Russia sends warships to Mediterranean as Syria tensions escalate

Russia is sending an anti-submarine ship and a missile cruiser to the Mediterranean as Western powers prepare for possible strikes against Syria. The news comes as Britain deployed six RAF Typhoon jets to its Akrotiri base in Cyprus in a move to protect British interests as tensions grow over Syria. Russia, who has stood staunchly behind the Syrian regime during its two-year civil war, has warned Western powers over strikes against Bashar al-Assad's forces for the use of chemical weapons. Russia's Interfax news agency quoted a source in the armed forces' general staff as saying the warships would arrive in the coming days because of the "well-known situation" - a clear reference to the conflict in Syria. The navy later denied the deployment was linked to events in Syria and said it was part of a long-planned rotation of its ships in the Mediterranean.

Syria: Any military attack on Syria is violation of UN Charter Syria's Permanent Representative to the UN, Bashar al-Jaafari, stressed that any military attack on Syria would constitute a violation of the UN Charter and an attack on the UN investigation mission, pointing out that Syria asked the UN Secretary-General to investigate into three new sites where the armed terrorist groups used chemical weapons against the Syrian Arab Army. At a press conference in New York, al-Jaafari said that the tripartite meeting of Britain, France and the United States at the Security Council is illegal and it is not consistent with the mission of preserving the international peace and security.

Thomas Gaist & Alex Lantier: US-NATO campaign to justify Syria war disintegrates as attack looms Washington’s campaign to justify war against Syria is disintegrating, as it becomes ever clearer that the war is illegal, and that Washington has no evidence to back up charges that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s regime used chemical weapons in Ghouta.
