Permalink Romney: There Are Boundaries That the Iranians Must Not Cross

Republican Presidential candidate Mitt Romney continues to try to lay out what he insists is a distinct position on Iran from President Obama, today trying to set out “red lines” and likening his stance to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. - “My own test is that Iran should not have the capability of producing a nuclear weapon,” Romney said, but he went on to insist that he believes there is “a long way to go” before that line is crossed. Which makes his claim of a Netanyahu-style position difficult to swallow, since the Israeli Prime Minister was apparently of a mind to start a war sometime this month before political and diplomatic pressure put the kibosh on it. In the past Romney has openly faulted President Obama’s position on Iran, but every time he speaks on the matter he lays out a position functionally identical to the incumbent, and it seems that in practice his position is different only rhetorically, and is the “same” as Netanyahu only to the extent he believes cozying up to the Israeli hawk can win him votes.

More about Romney's Jewish neocon advisor, Dan Senor here, here, here and here.

ABC News: Who’s Advising Mitt Romney on Foreign Policy? - Dan Senor is one of Romney’s closest advisers on foreign policy. Since Paul Ryan has been selected as the GOP’s vice presidential candidate, Senor has been traveling with Ryan–but today, he left the trail because of the “foreign policy developments” and is in Boston and NYC. Last month, the New York Times described Senor as an “advocate of neoconservative thinking that has sought to push presidents to the right for years on Middle East policy.” Senor led a foreign policy briefing for Ryan on the plane yesterday from Seattle along with Jamie Fly, executive director, Foreign Policy Initiative and Reuel Marc Gerecht from the Foundation for Defense of Democracies.

Permalink Manning Case: Court poses hurdle to WikiLeaks case file access

The U.S. military's highest court is asking WikiLeaks to explain why the military justice system, rather than civilian courts, is the proper venue for seeking routine judicial documents in the court-martial of an Army private charged with giving classified information to the secret-spilling website.

The jurisdictional issue was the first question raised by the Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces during an hour of oral arguments Wednesday in Washington. The panel of five civilian judges heard arguments on the main dispute but made it clear that the court must first be convinced it has jurisdiction. Lawyers from the Center for Constitutional Rights and the government said they would submit briefs before the end of the month on that question. The New York-based civil-rights group is representing WikiLeaks, its founder Julian Assange and several left-leaning pundits and publications including The Nation magazine and the broadcast operation Democracy Now. The Associated Press is among 30 news organizations supporting the appeal in a brief filed by the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press. They agree with the appellants that the First Amendment requires timely public access to written documents such as motions and rulings in Pfc. Bradley Manning's court-martial.

Permalink Syria rejects UN chief's call for unilateral cease-fire, says insurgents must end violence first

The Syrian government has rejected UN chief Ban Ki-moon's call for unilateral cease-fire, saying that foreign-sponsored armed groups should end violence first. - "We told Ban Ki-moon to send emissaries to the countries which have influence on the armed groups, so that they [would] put an end to the violence," said Syrian Foreign Ministry spokesman, Jihad Makdissi. Makdissi added that Damascus had earlier implemented cease-fire twice during the abortive UN military observer mission deployed to Syria between April and the end of August. Yet, he said, the insurgents had misused the opportunity “to expand their armed deployment and increase casualties due to terrorist activities." Makdissi also stated that Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Muallem has discussed the issue with Ban on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly meeting earlier this month. Muallem told the UN chief that it was urgent to stop governments that "finance, train and deliver weapons to the armed groups, notably Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Turkey."

Permalink Turks force Syrian crew to sign 'emergency landing, no F-16s' statement - witnesses

Passengers onboard the plane intercepted by Turkish jets said that security forces were making the crew and passengers sign fraudulent papers suggesting that the plane made an emergency landing and no Turkish military were involved in the incident. - Hours after Turkish authorities announced that the Syrian Airlines passenger plane intercepted by its F-16s was granted a departure clearance, the aircraft remained on the tarmac in darkness.

“Four people onboard have been beaten up, two crew and two passengers, as they tried to force them to sign documents,” Sherin Azis, a hostess on the plane, told RT by phone. “We don’t know what these papers are about. We are scared for the fate of the captain. He was taken away and threatened with arrest if he does not sign an emergency landing paper.”

Fatima al-Saman, a passenger and a mother of three, also told RT that the captain was being forced to sign a release stating that military planes were not involved and the plane just made an emergency landing.

PressTV: Syria accuses Turkey of ‘air piracy’ over forced landing of plane

Russia Today: ‘West is portraying Russia as the villain siding with Assad, the butcher’ - Turkey intercepted a Syrian civilian airliner on suspicions of carrying "non-civilian" Russian cargo. By accusing Russia of arming Syria, Western powers threw their weight around to boost the case for intervention, analyst Eric Draitser told RT.
