Permalink First presidential debate: Obama hit with left hook on TV, online

Left-leaning commentators hit President Barack Obama hard on TV and the Internet after the first presidential debate in Denver on Wednesday night, saying GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney handily defeated his more experienced opponent. MSNBC hosts were "stunned" by Obama's performance, suggesting the president was rusty for not having debated in four years. "I don't think he explained himself very well on the economy. I think he was off his game. I was absolutely stunned tonight," Ed Schultz said. "Where was Obama tonight?" Chris Matthews asked.

Permalink US forces kills 15 Afghans in Kandahar airstrike

According to Kandahar officials, the attack took place early Thursday in the town of Shah Wali Kot, killing 15 "Taliban militants". - The Taliban have not yet confirmed the statement. The airstrike is the second of such attacks over the past 24 hours. On Wednesday, four people were also killed in a US-led airstrike in eastern Afghanistan. The US claims its airstrikes target militants, but local sources say civilians have been the main victims of the attacks.

Permalink Turkey attacks Syria after stray shelling

“Our armed forces in the border region responded immediately to this abominable attack in line with their rules of engagement,” the statement said. “Targets were struck through artillery fire against places in Syria identified by radar. Turkey will never leave unanswered such kinds of provocation by the Syrian regime against our national security.”

The Turkish attack was ordered in response to what was apparently the accidental strike by a Syrian mortar on the town of Akçakale on Turkey’s southeastern border with Syria. One shell struck a house in the town’s residential section, killing a woman and her four children. It was by no means clear which side was responsible for the shelling, however, and some commentators in Turkey suggested that it could have been deliberately staged with the aim of provoking a Turkish intervention. [...] Moscow’s Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov cautioned that the Western-backed “rebels” might deliberately provoke fighting on the border with the aim of drawing Turkey into the conflict.

Syria’s Information Minster Omran Zoabion offered condolences over the deaths and called for restraint, saying that the Syrian government was investigating the incident. He attributed the tensions to a situation “on the border with terrorist groups that are spread along it and pose a threat not only to Syria’s national security but also to regional security.”

Permalink Man Crushed by Steamroller On Orders of Chinese Officials

A villager in northern China attempting to resist a forced government relocation by remaining on his land was brutally crushed to death by a road flattening truck on the orders of a Chinese government official. - The story, which was censored in China’s state controlled media, has caused outrage amongst users of Weibo, the Chinese version of Twitter, given it’s horrifying similarity to what happened to student protesters who were crushed to death by tanks during the Tiananmen Square protests in 1989. The victim, He Zhi Hua, refused to accept a paltry payment from the government which has forcefully evicted Changsha Village locals in order to re-appropriate their land for commercial use. When Hua began a protest by lying down on the spot through which construction vehicles had to pass, the local Vice Mayor ordered workers for the state-owned company to murder Hua by driving over his body with a huge road-flattening truck. Stop motion video with Mear One painting a thought provoking mural in London Sept 2012. Sparking conversation and debate...

"There is word of an attempt to buff my mural in London tomorrow morning. If any one is in Shoredich appreciates my art please try to get together with others and stand against them. Repost this to your friends in London and the UK. Reason is a group of conservatives do not like my mural and are playing a race card with me. My mural is about class & privilege. The banker group is made up of Jewish & white Anglos. For some reason they are saying I am anti semetic. This I am most defenatly not. I believe in equality and brother & sisterhood on a global scale. What I am against is class. Ruling class, this is a problem and we need humanization. I don't even believe in borders. But that's another story. Help me to stand for freedom of expression! London calling!" [Mear One - Video]

Permalink People’s Mujahedin of Iran (MEK)

The People’s Mujahedin of Iran (Mojahedin-e Khalq-e Iran, or MEK) is an Islamic- and Marxist-inspired militant organization that advocates the overthrow of the Islamic Republic of Iran. The group was founded in 1963 as an armed guerrilla group after the Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi violently suppressed opposition to his regime.

Over the years, the group developed a track record of violent opposition to the Iranian regime—both against the monarchy and the Islamic government that succeeded it—and countries deemed supportive of it, including the United States. For years, the group was considered a proscribed terrorist organization by the United States. But on the heelsof an aggressive and well-funded lobbying campaign supported by a bipartisan cast of high-profile former public officials, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton announced in September 2012 that she was removing the group from the State Department’s list of foreign terrorist organizations, where the MEK had been listed since 1997.
