Permalink Mortar from Syria kills five family members in Turkey

A mortar bomb fired from Syria landed in a residential district of the southeastern Turkish town of Akcakale on Wednesday, killing a woman and four children from the same family and wounding at least eight other people. - A cloud of dust and smoke rose up over low-rise buildings as residents ran to help the wounded. Others, infuriated by the increasing spillover of violence from Syria's civil war, took to the streets shouting protests against the local authorities. Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu phoned U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon to brief him about the incident and also spoke with senior military officials and Syria crisis mediator Lakhdar Brahimi, his ministry said in a statement.

Permalink At least 27 killed, over 70 injured in three blasts that rocked Aleppo

Syrian state TV reports of three powerful explosions in downtown Aleppo, the financial hub and largest city of the country. Reportedly the blasts were caused by car bombs that terrorists delivered to the city’s main square. Later, terrorists struck again, blowing up a fourth car, this time near a municipal palace in Baba Amr quarter, reports Lebanese Al-Manar TV station. Syrian government officially confirmed 27 dead in the terror act. Most of the victims of the blasts are civilians. Luckily enough, the three cars on Saadallah al-Jabri square went off early in the morning when the municipal buildings were empty. The House of Officers has reportedly been completely destroyed. Rescuers continue to clear up the debris and the number of victims may grow. Terror acts like this are not common in Aleppo. The first one happened in February, when two suicide car bombers attacked security compounds in Aleppo's industrial center killing 28 people. Since then, there have only been two similar attacks.

Permalink US Navy Can Turn Your Smartphone Into a Spy

Is your cellphone spying on you? If it isn’t now, it may well be soon, thanks to a new piece of malware developed by the US Navy and called PlaceRaider, which allows them to remotely produce 3D models of whatever room an infected phone is currently in, using the camera and other censors to map out intimate parts of your life. The developed app is Android specific, and was shown to be effective at stealing personal financial information, listening in on phone conversations, even stealing keystrokes from a nearby keyboard though the use of the phone’s accelerometer. Deploying the app wouldn’t necessarily be all that difficult, as it could be embedded in another app for, say, a popular phone game and the end user would never realize it had been installed, let alone that it was currently running.

Permalink New HD CCTV puts human rights at risk

Watchdog warns: Big Brother Britain has arrived unnoticed. - CCTV systems capable of identifying and tracking a person's face from half a mile away are turning Britain into a Big Brother society, the UK's first surveillance commissioner has warned. New high-definition cameras are being rolled out across UK cities without public consultation into the intrusion they pose, Andrew Rennison told The Independent. The increasing sophistication of surveillance technology is becoming so serious that Britain may be in breach of its own human rights laws, he said. There are already thought to be around 1.85 million CCTV cameras in the UK. In a stark message to police forces and the Government, Mr Rennison predicted there will be a justifiable public outcry if facial recognition systems and HD cameras are allowed to proliferate on high streets, public transport and at entertainment venues. "The technology has overtaken our ability to regulate it," he said.

"A tiny camera in a dome with a 360-degree view can capture your face in the crowd, and there are now the algorithms that run in the background. I've seen the test reviews that show there's a high success rate of picking out your face against a database of known faces."

Permalink WikiLeaks’ web host raided by Swedish police

The Stockholm-based web host for WikiLeaks and The Pirate Bay has been raided by Swedish police. Four of the firm’s servers were seized, though it remains unclear exactly who was being targeted. - The Stockholm-based web host PeRiQuito AB, or PRQ, was targeted by police on Monday, the company’s owner Mikael Viborg told local media. A large swatch of filesharing sites, including The Pirate Bay and PRQ’s own website have been down since the raid, though Viborg says the technical issues were unrelated to the seizure of the servers. Several Swedish government agencies and businesses were the victims of cyber attacks in the days leading up to the raid. No one has claimed responsibility for the attacks, though Swedish police claim they are linked to the ongoing sex crimes investigation against WikiLeaks-founder Julian Assange.

Permalink U.S. "preparing to change Bosnian constitution"

SARAJEVO -- The U.S. launched "a serious and wide-reaching diplomatic initiative for a constitutional reconstruction of the Federation of Bosnia-Herzegovina", said reports. The outlines of the planned reconstruction remain unknown, but the results "will be visible as early as by mid-2013", sources with insider knowledge have been quoted. Political circles in both Bosnian entities have been "caught by surprise", and are "aware that this would represent a huge reconstruction of the Dayton, which means that the constitutional structure of the state might be next on the agenda". After the 1992-95 war in Bosnia-Herzegovina, which ended with the Dayton Accords, the country was organized in two entities: the Serb Republic (RS) and the Muslim Croat Federation (FBiH). The latter entity is further sub-divided into cantons.

Permalink Scientists Warn Geo-Engineering Can Kill Billions of People

Geo-engineering is touted as a last-ditch effort to save people and the planet from global warming. But the truth is that geo-engineering can alter rain cycles leading to droughts and famine that could result in billions of deaths! Therefore, Bill Gates appears to be using his concern over global warming to cloak his real intent of controlling weather and/or depopulation. [...] Geo-engineering can actually cause global warming when tampering with clouds in the upper atmosphere/stratosphere. The Gates-funded scientist lobbyists propose spraying sulfur dioxide 30 miles above Earth and the New Mexico experiment proposes spraying 15 miles above surface- both of these fall within the parameters of the upper atmosphere/stratosphere.

Permalink ‘Bahrain buys favorable CNN content’

Amid a violent crackdown on a popular uprising, Bahrain paid CNN to get favorable coverage, says a former reporter who believes her documentary on the protests there was censored by the network. Former CNN journalist Amber Lyon made the documentary more than six months ago. It was aired domestically in the US, but never made it to CNN international, raising claims that the management pulled the plug on the story. RT spoke to Lyon to get the full story of what happened.

Permalink Martin McGuinness backs call for NI inquiry

The British Government must open itself up to an independent inquiry if Northern Ireland is ever to achieve true peace, its Deputy First Minister, Martin McGuinness, said yesterday.

"Unfortunately, to date, the British state has refused to acknowledge its role as a participant in the conflict. I believe it is insulting to the victims and insulting to people's intelligence," the Sinn Fein politician said. He has backed a call by Michael Mansfield, QC, for a UN-led truth and reconciliation body.

An independent investigation was needed to achieve reconciliation, Mr McGuinness said. "To achieve total recovery, the process must be victim-centred, independent and inclusive of all the participants, including the two governments. The British Government should accept it was central to the conflict and make a contribution to the process."

Permalink France to cover 100 percent of abortion costs

France on Monday unveiled a package of reforms designed to increase access to the number of abortions, including 100 percent reimbursement of medical costs by the state social security system. At present French women are only able to claim back between 70 and 80 percent of the costs, which average between 200 and 450 euros depending on whether the abortion is induced by medication taken at home or carried out by surgical procedure in a clinic. The change to full reimbursement was included in the 2013 social security budget unveiled on Monday. In a statement the government said the move was necessary to ensure all women have "equal access to abortion."

Permalink Obama orders CIA and Navy SEALS to hunt down "terrorists" who attacked US consulate in Libya

President Barack Obama has ordered the CIA and the Pentagon to hunt down the "terrorists" who attacked the US consulate in Libya. It's unclear what the president plans to do once the perpetrators of the September 11 assault in Benghazi are found, but he has mobilized the military's Joint Special Operations Command to help carry out the mission. Once the targets and their locations are confirmed, Obama could order any number of actions -- from drone strikes to commando raids to joint operations with the Libyans.

[Editor's Comment:] Just for the record: in the not so distant past, when these guys used their guns (supplied to them by the CIA) to attack Libya's national army and to murder Mr. Gaddafi, they were called "freedom fighters". Now that the US "consulate" has taken a hit, they apparently have become "terrorists". By the way, there never was an American consulate in Benghazi. The buildings referred to as one, in reality was the CIA head quarters in eastern Libya, choc-full of agents preparing for mischief. - A true den of vipers, if you like.
