Permalink Philadelphia Police Brutality Caught On YouTube As Officer Attacks Woman At Puerto Rican Day Parade 2012

Police brutality in Philadelphia is nothing new as reports of it occurring rise up on a weekly basis, but during this past weekend's Puerto Rican Day Parade, another case of police brutality occurred, which thankfully was published on YouTube for the world to see.

Philadelphia celebrated not only Puerto Rican heritage, but Latino heritage as well yesterday as their Puerto Rican Day Parade welcomed over 1,500 participants, including the parade's host Daisy Maria Martinez, who hosts "Viva Daisy!" on the Food Network. Instead of the parade being a cause for celebration, it's now just another case of a police officer brutally attacking a parade attendant. The video was captured by Gisela Valentin and shows a woman being assaulted by a police officer after he assumes she emptied her water bottle at him, which when watching the video, is obvious she had nothing to do with it. The video also shows the police officer immediately arresting the woman after sucker-punching her and [another police officer] escorts her away from the scene. As the woman is being escorted away, she turns her head to look back to speak to the officer, which shows she has a bloody nose. This case of police brutality is completely and utterly disgusting as the police officer certainly overreacted to being lightly doused with some water.

Permalink In 10 years, there will be no more Israel: Kissinger

The idea of Israel’s inexorable collapse is no longer a taboo as more top brass US officials are explicitly attesting to the fact, with prominent US diplomat Henry Kissinger saying, “In 10 years, there will be no more Israel.” - “Kissinger's statement is flat and unqualified. He is not saying that Israel is in danger, but could be saved if we just gave it additional trillions of dollars and smashed enough of its enemies with our military.… He is not offering a way out. He is simply stating a fact: In 2022, Israel will no longer exist,” political columnist Kevin Barrett wrote in an article published on Press TV website on Sunday. He also pointed to a study commissioned by the US Intelligence Community (IC), comprised of 16 US intelligence agencies, earlier this year, titled “Preparing for a Post-Israel Middle East,” and pointed out that the content of the IC’s report corroborates Kissinger's contention. “The sixteen US intelligence agencies agree that Israel cannot withstand the coming pro-Palestinian juggernaut consisting of the Arab Spring, the Islamic Awakening, and the rise of the Islamic Republic of Iran,” the analyst added.

Permalink US warns European governments against supporting Palestinians at UN

Private memo threatens 'significant negative consequences' if Palestinian Authority succeeds in obtaining enhanced status. - The United States has warned European governments against supporting a Palestinian bid for enhanced status at the United Nations, saying such a move "would be extremely counterproductive" and threatening "significant negative consequences" for the Palestinian Authority, including financial sanctions. The Palestinians will wait until after the US presidential election in early November before proceeding with their bid for upgraded status. However, they insist they will press for a vote by the end of the year and are confident of winning a comfortable majority among the UN's 193 countries. The US has no veto at the general assembly.

Hanan Ashrawi, a member of the Palestinian Liberation Organisation executive committee, described the memorandum as "typical American behaviour but also overkill". "It is ridiculous and unconscionable the way they put themselves at the service of Israel in such a blatant way. This is tremendous American pressure and bias."

Permalink Georgia President Mikheil Saakashvili admits election loss

President Mikheil Saakashvili has admitted his party has lost Georgia's parliamentary election, in a live TV announcement. - He said the Georgian Dream bloc of his main rival, billionaire tycoon Bidzina Ivanishvili, had won Monday's election. Victory for Mr Ivanishvili means the first democratic transfer of power in Georgia's post-Soviet history. Mr Saakashvili, who has led the country since 2003, will remain in power until presidential elections next year. However, under agreed reforms the parliament and prime minister will acquire greater powers than the president after that election. Early results showed Georgian Dream ahead in the party list vote, which accounts for 77 of the 150 seats. President Saakashvili said it was clear that Georgian Dream had won a majority.

Permalink Police stakeout bill for Assange tops £1m as it costs £11,000 a DAY to ensure he doesn't flee Ecuadorian Embassy

24/7 surveillance: Officers have been watching the property in Knightsbridge since Assange breached his bail and claimed asylum in June.

They have been told to arrest him if he puts ‘one toe’ outside. Ecuadorean foreign minister Ricardo Pinto has warned Mr Assange he could be in the embassy for a decade if he is not allowed to leave Britain. Critics have called on the Metropolitan Police to end the costly stakeout. Last week, Foreign Secretary William Hague admitted there is ‘no sign of any breakthrough’ after meeting his Ecuadorean counterpart Ricardo Pinto at the United Nations in New York. Mr Pinto has warned Mr Assange that he could be in the embassy for a decade if he is not allowed to leave Britain. The comments came after the hacking activist accused the U.S. of persecuting WikiLeaks and torturing Bradley Manning, the soldier accused of leaking classified documents. At least four Met officers guard the embassy, on the second floor of a block of flats behind Harrods in Knightsbridge, West London, around the clock. They have set up a £250,000 mobile command station on the doorstep of the building and occupy positions outside and in surrounding properties. Officers from every London borough, specialist police units and undercover squads have been brought in to join the open-ended stake out.

Permalink Pentagon Declares Failed Afghanistan Surge a Success…by Redefining its Goal after the Fact

After eleven years of war in Afghanistan, which have left 15,322 Americans wounded and 2,126 dead [both official numbers], the Pentagon appears ready to take the advice given by Senator George Aiken (R-Vermont) in 1966 regarding the failing war in Vietnam: unilaterally declare victory and go home. To make such a declaration even marginally credible, however, the military has first determined to “move the goalposts” by redefining the goals of the war after the fact. That the war in Afghanistan, including the “troop surge” ordered by President Obama in 2009, has been a failure is clear from a recent report released by the NATO Afghanistan military command.

Permalink White House Hack Attack

Hackers [allegedly] linked to China’s government broke into one of the U.S. government’s most sensitive computer networks, breaching a system used by the White House Military Office for nuclear commands, according to defense and intelligence officials familiar with the incident.

One official said the cyber breach was one of Beijing’s most brazen cyber attacks against the United States and highlights a failure of the Obama administration to press China on its persistent cyber attacks. Disclosure of the cyber attack also comes amid heightened tensions in Asia, as the Pentagon moved two U.S. aircraft carrier strike groups and Marine amphibious units near waters by Japan’s Senkaku islands. China and Japan—the United States’ closest ally in Asia and a defense treaty partner—are locked in a heated maritime dispute over the Senkakus, which China [correctly] claims as its territory.

Permalink TSA hires a priest excluded from clergy for child molestation

In 2002, Thomas Harkins was permanently removed by the Catholic Church after 20-plus years of allegations that the former clergyman had molested children at parishes across the East Coast. Today, he’s your friendly TSA agent. - Despite being excommunicated and forced to pay around $195,000 to settle civil lawsuit relating to a barrage of sex-crime charges in the greater Philadelphia area, Harkins, now 65, didn’t have a problem finding a new job after being booted from the Catholic Church in 2002. Shortly after, he was hired by the Transportation Security Administration and assigned to a position that required him to routinely pat-down young children and subject them to the evasive, hands-on body scans that have become a hallmark of post-9/11 America.

Permalink Bahraini court confirms jail terms for medics who aided protesters

Bahrain's top court confirmed the jail sentences of nine doctors for their role in last year’s pro-democracy protests, state news agency BNA reported. The medics will be imprisoned for up to five years. - On Monday, Attorney General Abdul-Rahman al-Sayed said the country’s Court of Cassation rejected all of the defendants’ appeals and upheld the verdicts, BNA said. The nine medics were among the twenty individuals tried by a Bahraini military tribunal in September 2011. The tribunal charged the doctors with felonies for their role in the February protests, which included treating antigovernment activists wounded by security forces and reporting those injuries to foreign media. Some of the medics also participated in the protests. The Bahraini government accused them of crimes including occupying a hospital and inciting hatred towards the country’s ruling royal family. The whole process was conducted under the ruling family's control, Khalil al-Marzooq, a member of the Bahraini opposition al-Wefaq Party, told RT.
