Former presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush met with survivors in Haiti Monday. At about 45 seconds into the video, Bush appears to wipe his hand on Clintons shirt after shaking the hands of survivors. Daily Mail: Caught on camera: Did George Bush shake hands with a Haitian man - then wipe his hand on Bill Clinton's shirt?

Permalink Reporter: NATO covering up, lying about civilian killings

A British reporter who reported on an apparent cover-up of the killing of an Afghan family says the NATO-led forces in that country habitually lie about innocent civilians' deaths. Jerome Starkey, the Afghanistan correspondent for the Times of London, says the "embed culture" of reporting in war zones results in military censorship and self-censorship that allows military commanders to get away with falsehoods about civilian deaths. In an article for Harvard University's Nieman Foundation for Journalism, Starkey explained he never would have discovered that locals in Paktia agree it was US and Afghan forces who killed two pregnant women, a teenage girl and two local government officials during a February night-time raid.

Permalink U.S. & NATO Are Supporting Afghan Drug Industry

The US military says it is using a new approach to fight drug production in Afghanistan, but Julian Mercille, lecturer at University College, Dublin, believes both they and NATO have in fact been supporting the industry. “The bulk of the income from drugs is captured by other players like traffickers and the police and people in the government. So the problem is that the US and NATO have empowered a lot of people who are involved in drugs in government and the police forces,” says Mercille. “That is one reason why the US and NATO have directly caused the drastic increases in drug production in Afghanistan.” PressTV: 40-fold drug surge in Afghanistan: report. Permalink Rotarix rotavirus vaccine contaminated with pig virus, officials say

About 1 million children in the US received Rotarix vaccine. Federal health authorities recommended Monday that doctors suspend using Rotarix, one of two vaccines licensed in the United States against rotavirus, saying the vaccine is contaminated with material from a pig virus. Rotarix, made by GlaxoSmithKline, was approved by the FDA in 2008. The contaminant material is DNA from porcine circovirus 1, a virus from pigs.

Permalink A stark truth: Israeli arms, U.S. dollars

Among other major purchases, the Israeli government has announced plans to replace its aging fleet of F-16 fighter jets with new, American-made F-35 fighters, a major cost that Israel hopes will be substantially born for [sic] by American taxpayers. Those would be the same "American taxpayers" who are now being told that they have to suffer cuts in Medicare and Social Security because of budgetary constraints.

Israeli Premier Benjamin Netanyahu leaves a White House meeting with US President Barack Obama without disclosing the nature of the talks. PressTV: On Iran, Clinton Tells AIPAC What Israel Wants To Hear.

[Editor's Comment:] Until today Obama thought Netanyahu was just another unruly Middle-Eastern leader who could be subdued by some White House rethoric and Hillary Clinton's drivel about the settlements. Obama also thought that 19 Arabs with boxcutters were behind 9/11. -Well, not anymore. Today Obama met one of the top 9/11 guys, his very own boss. -Netanyahu, this “former” Sayeret Matkal operative, taught him a lesson or two and set a couple of things straight. This is some of what he told Obama:

We did 9/11. This is our turf *, see? Nothing happens around here unless we've OK'd it and when we say jump, you jump. Have I made myself clear? So don't give me this shit about the “settlements” anymore 'cause we've planned for more of them, why, lots of 'em, in fact, thousands of them and we don't want you whining about them all the time. -Ah, and one more thing, get me those fighter jets ** pretty damn quick and get ready for Iran.”

Permalink Israeli MP likens British to "dogs" for Israeli expulsion

The expulsion of an Israeli 'diplomat' from Britain over the terrorist murder of a Palestinian leader in Dubai has provoked outrage in the Israeli Knesset, comparing the British to "dogs". "I think [the] British are behaving hypocritically and I don't want to offend dogs on this issue, since some dogs are utterly loyal," said Aryeh Eldad, National Religious Party lawmaker in the Israeli Knesset (parliament), quoted by the Sky News. Permalink Legality of US drones questioned

Missiles fired from US drones killed at least six people on Tuesday in a Pakistani tribal area bordering Afghanistan, according to security officials. It's the latest in a wave of attacks that have been used to target alleged enemy combatants but which frequently kill innocent civilians. The latest strike came as a congressional committee in Washington DC heard evidence that legal issues surrounding the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) or drones have not been fully worked out.

A lone protester was told by the chairman: "You're going to have an opportunity to sit down or be asked to leave - it's your choice." She sat down but soon left the room, allowing the door to slam behind her. The committee went on to hear that while the US has more than 7,000 UAVs and more on order, there is still no legal framework for the operation of this new technology. Permalink Marine Most Responsible for Killing 24 Iraqi Civilians in Haditha May Be Freed on Technicality

Haditha Killings: No One Left to Blame? A legal snafu could clear the way to freedom for the Marine sergeant perhaps most responsible for the deaths of 24 Iraqi civilians in the infamous Haditha massacre of 2005. A motion filed by Sgt. Frank Wuterich's attorneys claims that Gen. James Mattis, who initially leveled charges against Wuterich and seven other Marines, was improperly influenced in legal matters by an aide who was involved in the investigation into the shooting, Col. John Ewers. According to senior defense counsel Haytham Faraj, court martial law prevents someone involved in the investigation from giving advice on legal matters related to the case. "The process that we're talking about is essential to bringing charges forward," Faraj told ABC News. "The process has to remain pure to ensure that the accused's rights are protected. We believe it was flawed." Seven other Marines had been charged in connection to the killings and the ensuing alleged cover-up, but charges against six of them were dismissed and the seventh was acquitted. Permalink Maliki Aide: We Won’t Recognize Election Results

An aide to Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki today insisted that his State of Law party will not recognize the final election results, expected later this week, because the election commission declined their request for a manual recount. The aide, Ali al-Adib, declared that the party had “strong, clear evidence” of fraud against them, though the only evidence cited was the “surprising” gains by the opposition Iraqiya party of former Prime Minister Ayad Allawi.

Permalink The French government has signalled that it is dropping a plan for a tax on domestic carbon dioxide emissions.

Jean-Francois Cope, parliamentary leader of the governing UMP party, was quoted as saying the tax "would be Europe-wide or not (exist) at all". Prime Minister Francois Fillon told parliament that the government should focus on policies that increased France's economic competitiveness. France had been rethinking the tax after a court rejected it last year.

Permalink Climate: Another Tainted Inquiry

It’s pretty discouraging that yet another inquiry is tainted by the selection of their panel. The University of East Anglia, seemingly emboldened by getting away with Geoffrey Boulton’s appointment to the ethics panel, have become much bolder in choosing the science panel. Chairman Oxburgh, a former oil company executive, is a green entrepeneur. Kerry Emanuel is a Michael Mann coauthor who blamed Climategate not on the scientists who composed the emails, but on an adverse ‘public relations campaign’.

And Katla, located under the massive Myrdalsjokull icecap, threatens disastrous flooding and explosive blasts when it blows. AWIP: Volcano Erupts Under Eyjafjallajökull -VIDEO.

Permalink CINDY SHEEHAN’S ARREST: IN HER OWN WORDS

Three of us went to pick up our property this morning at the Park Police station and as we were being jacked around, an officer named Thomas (Badge number 628) told me that if I “stopped getting arrested” I wouldn’t have to go through all of this. I said: “when the wars stop, I will stop.” He actually then told me: “The wars will stop when we nuke them and take their oil.” I wonder why they are called “pigs.”

Permalink Tony Blair in citizen's arrest scare as Brussels journalist tries to detain him over war crimes

A journalist tried to arrest Tony Blair for 'crimes against peace' as the former prime minister arrived to give a speech at the European Parliament in Brussels. Mr Blair flinched as his accuser, left-wing writer David Cronin, wearing a press pass and carrying a notepad, put a hand on his wrist and told him: 'This is a citizen's arrest.' The former leader is then said to have given would-be detainer a 'bewildered and contemptuous' stare before bodyguards pounced.

Permalink Obama health bill sets the stage for assault on Medicare and Social Security

It has for decades been deemed politically impossible to attack basic entitlement programs in the US, such as Social Security and Medicare, which account for an enormous and rising portion of the federal budget. Now, with Obama’s health care plan, the stage has been set for slashing these programs. This is the reason for the general jubilation in media and financial circles. The claim that a genuinely progressive social reform has been dispensed as a gift from above flies in the face of the whole of American history. This is a country where every significant social reform has been the outcome of decades of the most bitter and bloody struggles against a ruling class that savagely resists social progress. Permalink Favorite colors test shows CEOs are different; take the test

Ask CEOs to pick their favorite color and what they select will often be very different than what most people would pick. For example, when 877 members of USA TODAY's CEO panel took an online personality color test, they were three times more likely to favor magenta than the public at large, three times less likely to select red, and 3½ times less likely to choose yellow. This, it turns out, is more than a curiosity. Psychiatry professor Rense Lange, an expert on tests for everyone from students to job hunters to those with early signs of Alzheimer's disease, has been looking hard at color tests and he has reached the conclusion that the results all but prove that CEOs are wired differently.

Permalink Supermassive black holes hint at dark matter behavior

Two astronomers at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) have found some hints on how dark matter behaves near supermassive black holes. The two UNAM astronomers, Dr. Xavier Hernandez and Dr.William Lee took some calculations on how dark matter is absorbed by black holes that lie at the center of galaxies. They found that the rate in which supermassive black holes absorb dark matter is very dependent on the amount of dark matter that resides in the black hole's vicinity. If the dark matter concentration were larger than matter equating a 7-Sun density spread over the space of a cubic light-year, the black hole would dramatically increase. The black hole would then engulf so much dark matter that the galaxy would get extremely distorted. Therefore, Hernandez and Williams' work suggests that the dark matter's density in galaxies' centers tends to a constant value. So, some of the assumptions that were previously made on the universe evolution predictions should be changed, as dark matter does not behave how scientists believed it did.
