Police officers in Chicago, Illinois can remotely access video shot from any of the city’s 24,000 closed-circuit television cameras, and they are already using that ability to nab "suspects" who thought they could outsmart surveillance. According to a recent Chicago Sun-Time article by Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Frank Main, police officers in the Windy City recently issued their first arrest stemming from the use of space-age facial-recognition technology coupled with thousands of cameras that collect live video in real-time at all hours of the day.

The US authorities have in effect trapped fugitive intelligence leaker Edward Snowden in Russia, President Vladimir Putin has said. But Mr Putin said Mr Snowden would leave if he was able to. ■ The former intelligence analyst has been offered asylum in a number of Latin American states, but has no documents with which to leave the transit zone at Moscow airport. The US has charged Mr Snowden with leaking classified information. Mr Putin has refused to hand over the fugitive to the US authorities, but says he can only stay in Russia if he stops leaking secrets about US surveillance schemes. He said there were signs that Mr Snowden was "changing his position". However, he added that Mr Snowden did not want to stay in Russia but wanted to take up residence in "another country". ■ Asked what Mr Snowden's future was, the Russian president said: "How should I know? It's his life." "He came to our territory without invitation. And we weren't his final destination... But the moment he was in the air... our American partners, in fact, blocked his further flight," he said. "They have spooked all the other countries, nobody wants to take him and in that way, in fact, they have themselves blocked him on our territory."

Spain has apologized for closing its airspace to Bolivian President Evo Morales' plane, which had to land at Vienna airport and was subsequently searched following reports that NSA leaker Edward Snowden was on board. "We regret this fact ... the procedure was not appropriate and bothered the president [Morales], putting him in a difficult situation," Spain's ambassador to Bolivia, Angel Vázquez, told journalists. The unconventional treatment of the Bolivian president has outraged Latin America.

Israeli settlers on Thursday cut down 1,150 olive trees in Palestinian groves near Nablus, a Palestinian Authority official said. - Residents of Itamar settlement used chainsaws to cut down the trees north of Awarta, said Ghassan Daghlas, who monitors settlement activity in the northern West Bank. The trees belonged to 25 Palestinian families and were planted in a 600-dunum grove, Daghlas said.

Syria's top "rebel" commander has accused David Cameron of betrayal after the Prime Minister abandoned plans to arm the Syrian opposition. - "General" Salim Idris, the head of the [so-called] Free Syrian Army, said the decision would "leave us alone to be killed" by President Bashar al Assad, and pave the way for al-Qaeda to dominate the rebel ranks. Mr Idris hit out in an interview with The Daily Telegraph after Downing Street confirmed that Mr Cameron had ruled out arming the opposition on advice from the British military. The government had previously hinted that it was strongly considering it, successfully lobbying two months ago for an end to the European Union arms embargo. But military chiefs at Britain's National Security Council are understood to have warned Downing Street that the conflict was now too advanced for basic weapons supplies to make much difference.
