Permalink 58 percent of eligible US voters boycott presidential election

At least 58 percent of eligible voters in the United States have decided not to participate in the US presidential election, arguing that their votes will have no effect on their future, a report says. - Various studies, however, suggest that, many of the non-participant Americans are committed to political participation in their society, anyway.

“I won’t participate in the elections, because I think the US governmental system is fundamentally illegitimate. I believe the US electoral system only paves the way for the legitimization of a government that is directed from above and under an oligarchic system,” Keith Preston of “Attack The System” group said.

“Attack The System” does not believe in the US government and advocates the distribution of power among public and private institutions. Preston said the members of the group sought the establishment of a system that could reflect the will of the majority, rather than fulfilling the interests of the small group that is now in control of everything. Voting in the election inspires the feeling of participation, but in reality limits your choice, he went on to say.

Permalink RT hosts third party debate #2: Tackling the issues the mainstream ignores

Unsung political candidates Jill Stein and Gary Johnson tackled issues the mainstream sought to gag. Broaching topics such as WikiLeaks and the US police state, the politicians gave voice to the issues forgotten in the scramble for the White House.

After the runaway success of the first third-party debate in Chicago, hosted by legendary broadcast journalist Larry King, RT and the Free and Equal Elections Foundation hosted another debate featuring Green Party candidate Jill Stein and Libertarian Party candidate Gary Johnson. The two candidates gave their take on international issues and foreign policy.

Stein and Johnson were the winners of an online poll following the October 23 debate, in which Justice Party candidate Rocky Anderson and Constitution Party candidate Virgil Goode also participated.

The final debate was moderated by a panel that included RT’s own Thom Hartmann, host of ‘The Big Picture,’ and Christina Tobin from the Free and Equal Elections Foundation.

Permalink KBR Ordered to Pay Troops $85 Million in Chromium Case

KBR Inc. (KBR), the largest U.S. military contractor, must pay 12 U.S. soldiers $85 million in noneconomic and punitive damages for negligently exposing the troops to toxic chromium dust at a company worksite in Iraq in 2003, a federal court jury in Portland, Oregon, said. The case was the first to go to trial against Houston-based KBR over injuries suffered by its employees or by troops guarding the workers at company sites in Iraq. The company has previously won favorable rulings that allowed it to avoid trial in lawsuits by soldiers and employees claiming injuries from the U.S. war in Iraq beginning in 2003.

Permalink The Permanent Militarization of America

IN 1961, President Dwight D. Eisenhower left office warning of the growing power of the military-industrial complex in American life. Most people know the term the president popularized, but few remember his argument. In his farewell address, Eisenhower called for a better equilibrium between military and domestic affairs in our economy, politics and culture.

Uncritical support of all things martial is quickly becoming the new normal for our youth. Hardly any of my students at the Naval Academy remember a time when their nation wasn’t at war. Almost all think it ordinary to hear of drone strikes in Yemen or Taliban attacks in Afghanistan. The recent revelation of counterterrorism bases in Africa elicits no surprise in them, nor do the military ceremonies that are now regular features at sporting events. That which is left unexamined eventually becomes invisible, and as a result, few Americans today are giving sufficient consideration to the full range of violent activities the government undertakes in their names. Were Eisenhower alive, he’d be aghast at our debt, deficits and still expanding military-industrial complex. And he would certainly be critical of the “insidious penetration of our minds” by video game companies and television networks, the news media and the partisan pundits.

Permalink Syrian rebels root for Romney in hopes of US military intervention

Desperate for foreign intervention, some rebels say they hope the party that brought on the Iraq war might also bring America to Syria.

Seldom do you find Arabs anywhere in the Middle East who have warm feelings about America’s most recent war with Iraq, especially in Syria where many people were actively involved in supporting the Iraqi insurgency. Yet as Syria’s upheaval nears the two-year mark, many of those who are increasingly desperate for a foreign intervention to end the conflict now reference Iraq as a seemingly positive example of why America might decide to help. With an eye on the US elections, they say they hope the party that brought them the Iraq war might also bring America to Syria.

“The Republicans prefer using the military. Like Bush, he entered Iraq and Afghanistan. They use the military in all cases so maybe they will try to intervene here,” says Mustafa Abu Abdu, who used to be a psychology student before the war. “Obama will keep saying that [President Bashar] Assad must stop and that America is sorry about civilian deaths, but he will not do anything to help here.”

A number of Syrians like Mr. Abdu say they hope Tuesday’s election in America will bring Mitt Romney into the Oval Office because they say he is more likely to change the US policy in favor an intervention in Syria.

Permalink Israeli PM Would Attack Iran, Even Without US "Permission"

Israeli Channel 2′s high profile report on the Israeli government’s quest to start a war with Iran is sparking considerable political debate today, after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reported on the show that Israel “dare not entrust its future” to the United States and that he would start the war even without US "permission". The report included the revelation that Israeli security officials blocked an effort to start such a war in 2010, and asked Netanyahu if he really had the “guts” to defy the US and start such a war. Netanyahu insists he does. The comments are sparking more criticism of Netanyahu’s bellicosity, with former PM Ehud Olmert noting that US support would be needed for a protracted Israeli war with Iran, and cautioning that Netanyahu should stop “spitting in the face” of the Obama Administration in anticipation of such a need.

Permalink Israel has announced plans to press ahead with construction of 1,213 homes on annexed West Bank land, defying international opposition to its settlement policies

The Israel Land Administration on Monday published notices inviting bids from contractors to build on plots in Ramot and Pisgat Zeev, urban settlements that Israel has declared part of Jerusalem. The plans call for the building of 607 new homes in Pisgat Zeev and 606 in Ramot. Tens of thousands of Israelis already live in the two areas. The Israeli anti-settlement group Peace Now said on Tuesday that an additional tender for the construction of 72 homes in the West Bank settlement of Ariel was reissued on Monday after a previous notice failed to attract winning bidders. Palestinians want to create a state in the occupied West Bank and the Gaza Strip, with East Jerusalem as its capital but they say Israeli settlement building will cripple the viability of any future country.

Permalink British PM resorts to Iranophobia to sell weapons

British Prime Minister David Cameron resorts to Iranophobia to sell weapons to Arab dictatorships in the Middle East region. - Under fire at home and abroad for acting openly as a salesman for the UK’s weapons industry, Cameron resorted to demonizing Iran in his desperate bid to sell as many as 100 Typhoon fighter jets worth £6billion to Persian Gulf countries of UAE, Saudi Arabia and Oman. Speaking on a visit to the United Arab Emirates, David Cameron again accused Iran of seeking to develop nuclear weapons, alleging that “it would make the Middle East a more unstable and more dangerous place". However, he failed to acknowledge that selling more than 100 state of the art fighter jets and thousands of other types of weapons to undemocratic regimes could also be a destabilizing factor in a region already struggling with uprisings and revolutions. The Prime Minister of cash-strapped Britain also failed to answer whether it was appropriate for “Mr Cameron to promote British arms sales to regimes which have given rise to human rights concerns”. It is now an open fact that cash-strapped Britain desperately needs money, so much so that its prime minister takes representatives of weapons manufacturing companies with him to authoritarian countries and resorts to Iranophobia to sell fighter jets and other weapons to Arab dictators.

Permalink Norway knocks off Abu Dhabi in having the world’s richest sovereign fund

Norway beats Abu Dhabi in having the world’s richest sovereign wealth fund, data released by the Sovereign Wealth Fund Institute showed. - Norway’s Government Pension Fund stood strong at $656.2 billion in October while Abu Dhabi Investment Authority’s assets held a total of $627 billion. ADIA’s long-term returns went down slightly over the turnout of events last year while the country was in the shadow of a slow global economic growth, the institute’s report said. “As a long-term investor, we see ourselves and others with similar investment horizons as providers of this necessary capital, with the advantage of patience and the ability to ride out dips in the economic cycle,” Dubai-based website, Arabian Business quoted Sheikh Hamed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, ADIA’s managing director, as saying. In June, about one third of the world’s top 20 investment funds estimated at $1.873.5 billion worth of assets were Middle East-based, the report added.

Permalink Greece shuts down as unions hold 48-hour general strike

Unions in Greece began a 48-hour walk-out on Tuesday in protest against the latest raft of anti-austerity measures, due to be put before the country's parliament on Wednesday. - Greece’s unions are holding their third general strike in six weeks in the hope of persuading politicians not to back a major new austerity program that will commit the country to further hardship. Flights will stop between 10:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. (0800-1100GMT) Tuesday, at the start of a 48-hour strike that will close schools, halt train and ferry services, and keep hospitals running on emergency staff only. Two days of demonstrations are planned to start at 11:00 a.m. (0900GMT) Tuesday, continuing until lawmakers vote late Wednesday on the bill to slash €13.5 billion ($17.3 billion) from budget spending over two years. Police cordoned off streets around main government buildings late on Monday night in preparation for potentially violent protests.
