Permalink Children pay high price for Gaza war

Thirteen-year-old Tasneem al-Nahal lies in the morgue of Gaza City's Shifa hospital, dressed in the pink-and-blue tracksuit she was wearing when an Israeli air raid killed her.

A few hours earlier, she was by the sea, playing with neighbours under a brilliantly blue sky. But when the air strike hit, pieces of shrapnel pierced her skull, spilling her bright red blood onto the pavement in front of her house.

The six-day conflict between Israel and Gaza militant groups has claimed the lives of at least 23 children, according to the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights, innocents cut down in a battle they barely understand. Hundreds more have been injured. And for those children who escape the physical toll of the war, there is a heavy psychological price to be paid. Many are traumatised by what they see and hear, terrified of a relentless air campaign, and unable to process the violence and death that surrounds them.

In Gaza City's Sheikh Radwan neighbourhood, just before noon, a funeral procession moves towards a mosque, where prayers will be said over the bodies of the Dallu family. At least eight members of the family were killed in a single strike on Sunday, the deadliest of the conflict so far. The bodies of the Dallu children, wrapped in Palestinian flags, their greying faces exposed, are carried by relatives at the head of a chanting crowd of men and boys.

Inside the mosque, the bodies are laid out while prayers are performed, and curious children try to squeeze between adults to see the corpses. One wide-eyed boy is pushed back by an adult, who tries to keep him from the macabre scene. On one body, relatives have pinned a photograph of the smiling girl who used to be.

Permalink Israel launches new media campaign to justify Gaza onslaught

Israel has launched a new media campaign to sway the world’s public opinion over the war in the Gaza Strip in its favor and demonize Palestinian resistance movement. - According to Ynetnews website, Israeli embassies are circulating fake photos of major world capitals under rocket attacks in social networking sites. The doctored pictures posted on sites like Facebook include images of New York, Berlin, and Mexico City hit by rockets. The campaign is led by the Israeli military as part of its psychological warfare to justify the deadly offensive against Gaza, which has left over 160 Palestinians dead and 12,000 more injured since November 14. The military is also circulating video clips against the Palestinian Hamas movement on the internet.

Permalink Cease-fire at last, truce terms vague

An Egyptian-brokered truce between Israel and Hamas Wednesday ended eight days of fierce fighting in Gaza, largely halting attacks that have killed 162 Palestinians and five Israelis and promising to discuss the easing of an Israeli blockade of the territory.

Gaza City’s streets were dark and deserted in the minutes after the cease-fire began at 9 p.m., but soon after people poured out onto the streets to hail the “victory.” Heavy celebratory gunfire could be heard throughout the Gaza Strip, and residents also released fireworks into the night sky, where Israeli drones could still be heard buzzing overhead. “The resistance has triumphed,” some shouted, alongside chants of “God is greatest.” Minutes before the deal took effect there was a last spasm of Palestinian rocket attacks and Israeli airstrikes, including one that killed a man minutes before the deadline.

Permalink UN team to investigate civilian drone deaths

The United Nations plans to set up a special investigation unit examining claims of civilian deaths in individual US covert drone strikes. - UN investigators have been critical of US ‘extrajudicial executions’ since they began in 2002. The new Geneva-based unit will also look at the legality of the programme. The latest announcement, by UN special rapporteur Ben Emmerson QC, was made in a speech on October 25 at Harvard law school. Emmerson, who monitors counter-terrorism for the UN, previously called in August for the US to hand over video of each covert drone attack. The London-based lawyer became the second senior UN official in recent months to label the tactic of deliberately targeting rescuers and funeral-goers with drones ‘a war crime’. That practice was first exposed by the Bureau for the Sunday Times in February 2012.

Permalink Caught On Camera: Woman Goes Into Cardiac Arrest After Being Tasered During Traffic Stop

A video taken by the California Highway Patrol may be the first time a camera has captured all of the events leading up to a cardiac arrest following the use of a TASER® electronic control device. On June 4, CHP officers stopped "to check on the welfare" of 50-year-old Angela Jones after finding her sitting in a parked vehicle on Haskell Avenue, near the Ventura (101) Freeway. A camera mounted on the officers’ car captured the incident.

Permalink Spanish government struggles to respond to home eviction suicides

In less than a month, at least five people who were about to be forcefully evicted from their homes committed suicide. The issue is galvanizing opposition to austerity measures. - Vilma Margarita Mejía cannot stop crying. She is weak and only whispers complete sentences after taking a deep breath. Any day now, today perhaps, police will come to her door and forcefully evict her, her two sons, and one brother from the home she’s lived in for 20 years. Nothing could prevent the bank from auctioning her apartment this week – not even a failed suicide attempt, or the fact that one of her sons recently underwent open heart surgery, or that she is awaiting a second operation possibly related to cancer. She is now illegally occupying the small space she has patiently decorated for years, but homelessness and an uncertain future are now a question of time.

Permalink India woman arrested over Facebook post 'in shock'

An Indian woman who was arrested on Monday over a comment on Facebook has said she was "shocked" by the incident. - Shaheen Dhada was arrested for criticising the shutdown of Mumbai after the death on Saturday of controversial politician Bal Thackeray. Her friend, Renu Srinivasan, who had "liked" the comment was also arrested. The two were later freed on bail. Recently, police have arrested a number of people in cases which campaigners call a breach of freedom of speech. On Tuesday, Ms Dhada spoke to the BBC Hindi service by telephone from the town of Palghar, near Mumbai. "I'm not angry, I'm not sad, but I'm just shocked. It was just my point of view, I'm shocked that it was my post because of which all this happened," she said. Ms Dhada also apologised for the post because, she said, she did not want to "hurt anyone's sentiments". Her friend, Renu Srinivasan, apologised too. "We are apologising just to keep everything in place. We don't want any violence. We want ourselves and our families to be safe," she told the CNN-IBN television channel.

Permalink Jill Kelley took multiple flights at taxpayer expense

Pentagon says 'unable' to track down records that reveal how many times Kelley has flown on government-owned planes.

Not only did Jill Kelley have MacDill's top brass over at her house, but 10 News has learned she also took multiple flights on military aircraft at taxpayer expense. In at least one instance, Kelley flew to the nation's capital with General John Allen, the commander of US forces in Afghanistan. Top officers have access to VIP planes like the C-40, a sort of mini-Air Force One with special communications gear. There's also a modified corporate jet, the C-37A, reserved for high-level officers. 10 News has made numerous requests for flight records to see just how many times Kelley has flown on government-owned planes, but so far the Pentagon says it has not been able to track down the answer. It's also possible officials simply don't want to release that information or that they didn't keep track of who was flying with some of the country's top military leaders.
