Permalink Turkey Vows to Take Action After Downing of Jet by Syria

Turkey's Prime Minister Recept Tayyip Erdogan.

Turkey’s president said Saturday that his country would do “whatever is necessary” in response to the downing of a Turkish military jet by Syria, adding a new complication to the tense relationship between the former allies split by Turkey’s support for Syrian rebels trying to overthrow the government.

“It is not possible to cover over a thing like this,” said President Abdullah Gul of Turkey, according to the Anatolia news agency. “Whatever is necessary will no doubt be done.” Syria said Friday that its military forces had shot down a Turkish jet that had entered its airspace just off the Syrian coast. But Mr. Gul said Saturday that while the exact route of the plane had not yet been confirmed, it was routine for military jets flying at high speeds to briefly cross into another country’s airspace, and that the jet’s presence over Syrian territory was not intended as a hostile act. The plane went down over the Mediterranean off the coast of the Syrian province of Latakia and south of the Turkish province of Hatay. On Saturday, Turkish officials confirmed that parts of the jet had been recovered.

Permalink Syrian Rebels Accused of Massacring 25 People in Northern Village

At least 25 people have been killed and their bodies mutilated by what Syrian state media described as “terrorists,” as a video was released showing the bodies piled on top of each other and being described by the cameraman as a pro-Assad militia. - “These are shabiha of Bashar al-Assad’s regime,” the narrator said, referring to the opposition’s name for pro-government armed gangs, and adding that they had been killed by the rebel Free Syrian Army (FSA) after clashes in northern Syria. The SANA state news agency cited sources as saying the victims had been abducted earlier on Friday from Darat Izza, a village in Aleppo province. Activists said 26 government supporters had been shot dead by rebels. As with most news of massacres from either side, little about the incident can be independently confirmed. But this type of behavior is consistent with earlier findings, like those from the UN, which describe crimes and atrocities being committed by the opposition fighters, including extrajudicial killings and torture.

Permalink Bill C-11 passes Commons, allowing for U.S.-style copyright law

After months of review, it looks like the Harper government's copyright reform bill will likely become law before Parliament's summer recess. Bill C-11 passed a final vote at third reading on Monday night, bringing Canadians one step closer to SOPA-like regulation of their media consumption. According to the CBC, the bill was immediately introduced to the Senate after passing the vote, and will likely be sped through the Senate review process, meaning it stands a good chance of becoming law in the coming month.

Permalink House bill extends TSA intel sharing to mass transit

The Transportation Security Administration already shares intelligence it collects with airports. Now a House bill would expand TSA's intel sharing to local mass transit systems as well. The House passed the bill May 30 and the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs is now considering the bill. In an interview with The Federal Drive, Rep. Jackie Speier (D-Calif.), the bill's sponsor, said the bill creates "fusion centers" where TSA can provide intel to local law enforcement and emergency management officials.

Permalink CIA ordered torture cage for black site in Poland

A Polish official says that prosecutors have a construction order that proves the CIA wanted a cage for terror suspects built at a secret 'black site' prison inside Poland.

Senator Jozef Pinior claims Krakow prosecutors have a document that shows a local contractor was asked to build a cage at Stare Kiekuty, a Polish army based used as a CIA prison for al Qaeda terror suspects in 2002 and 2003. "In a state with rights," Pinior told the Polish paper Gazeta Wyborcza, "people in prison are not kept in cages." He said a cage was "non-standard equipment" for a prison, but standard "if torture was used there." Asked if he was sure the cage was for humans, he said, "What was it for? Exotic birds?" He said he has not seen the construction order, but that the Krakow prosecutor's office, which is investigating the prison, has a copy of it.

Permalink Paraguay Presidernt Fernando Lugo ousted from office after impeachment

Paraguay's senate removed president Fernando Lugo from office in a rapid impeachment trial on Friday, and the leftist former priest said he was stepping aside even though he considered his ouster a blow to democracy. - Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez said he won't recognise the "illegal and illegitimate government" that replaced Lugo. Speaking to reporters in Caracas, Chavez said his ally "preferred the sacrifice" of stepping aside, and that the trial had been a setup. Ecuador's president, Rafael Correa, said his government also wouldn't recognise any government in Paraguay other than Lugo's. "This goes beyond Fernando Lugo. It goes beyond Paraguay. It's about true democracy for all of our America," Correa said on television. A delegation of foreign ministers from the Union of South American Nations, or UNASUR, travelled to Paraguay ahead of Friday's trial to attempt to intervene. After the senate's verdict, Venezuelan foreign minister Nicolas Maduro denounced it as a "new type of coup." "A truly shameful act has been committed," Maduro told reporters. Costa Rica's government also deplored Lugo's dismissal, saying in a statement that it would offer him asylum if necessary.
