Permalink Ethnic Cleansing: Israel admits it revoked residency rights of quarter million Palestinians since 1967

Israel stripped more than 100,000 residents of Gaza and some 140,000 residents of the West Bank of their residency rights during the 27 years between its conquest of the territories in 1967 and the establishment of the Palestinian Authority in 1994. - As a result, close to 250,000 Palestinians who left the territories were barred from ever returning. Since many of those who lost their residency rights from 1967 to 1994 in both Gaza and the West Bank were students or young professionals, their descendants today presumably number in the hundreds of thousands. Of the original people affected by the policy – nearly 250,000 – many have since died. But several thousands who were affiliated with the PA were granted the right to return in 1994; still other Palestinians have since been allowed to return for a variety of reasons.

Permalink Indiana First State to Allow Citizens to Shoot Law Enforcement Officers

Police officers in Indiana are upset over a new law allowing residents to use deadly force against public servants, including law enforcement officers, who unlawfully enter their homes. It was signed by Republican Governor Mitch Daniels in March. The first of its kind in the United States, the law was adopted after the state Supreme Court went too far in one of its rulings last year, according to supporters. The court had ruled that there was "no right to reasonably resist unlawful entry by police officers."

Permalink US accelerates preparations for 'no-fly zone' in Syria

The United States may soon take on a formal role in the Syrian uprising after reports surfaced this week that suggest the White House wants an air offensive targeting the regime of President Bashar al-Assad. - After over a year of unrest in Syria, Israel’s Debka news agency reports that US President Barack Obama has asked the US Navy and Air Force to accelerate plans that would aid in the ousting of Assad. According to their sources, President Obama hopes that by initiating a temporary air strike in locales instrumental to the Syrian government, the US may be able to decimate Assad’s control by attacking his regime’s military command centers. The US would call for a no-fly zone over Syria, reports Debka, then send their own personnel to strike Assad-aligned targets. Murmurings of the latest plans out of Washington come less than two weeks after Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-South Carolina) called for the implementation of a no-fly zone. Speaking to reporters last month, Sen. Graham said that ousting Assad from control in Syria is much more crucial for America’s interests than the issue of Libya; last year the US aided in the removal of Colonel Muammar Gaddafi from Libyan rule.

Permalink Russia Conference Aimed at Forcing US to End Support for Terrorists in Syria

A key opposition leader in Syria threw his weight behind a recent Russian proposal to hold an international conference on the Syrian crisis, saying that the move is an effort to exert pressure on the US and some Arab states to stop their growing financial and arms support for terrorists in Syria. - Russia has recently called for a meeting in Moscow or Geneva with the participation of Iran, the US and other regional and international heavyweights to find a political solution to the current crisis in Syria. Speaking to FNA on Tuesday, Leader of the Opposition Syrian Social Nationalist Party Ali Haidar voiced support for the Russian initiative and other international gatherings which aim to resolve the crisis in Syria, saying such moves promote transparent interaction in opposition to interference in Syria's internal affairs. Asked if the presence of the US and Saudi Arabia in the Russian conference would mean an end to their support for terrorist groups, Haidar said, "No doubt, the international conference in Russia and formation of a contact group will be in line with the pressures exerted on these countries to make them stop their arms supports and other forms of backups for armed elements in Syria."

Permalink Vaporized: Americans’ Wealth Collapses 40% Over Last Three Years

In July of 2010 we offered evidence that America’s middle class was being systematically wiped out. Today we learn how truly horrific this wealth destruction really is. And, it’s only going to get worse. - While government (un)employment statistics show that 8.3% are out of work, the number is closer to 22% – those are great depression numbers. If you lose your job today, there is a strong possibility you won’t be finding any meaningful labor any time soon. And for those just exiting college with hundred thousand dollar degrees in their hands, the prospect of ever finding a job and paying of those loans is almost nil.

Permalink Bradley Manning’s motions to dismiss charges rejected

A military judge rejected on June 8 a motion by the defense team of Army Private Bradley Manning calling for the dropping of some charges against the accused whistleblower. The judge also ordered further pre-trial hearings later this month. The military is pushing the full court martial trial from September back to November or even next January. - The 24-year-old soldier has already been held for more than two years, without being convicted of a crime, on charges under the Espionage Act that carry a maximum sentence of death. He was arrested May 26, 2010, while working as an intelligence analyst in Baghdad. Manning is accused of leaking hundreds of thousands of files to WikiLeaks, including evidence of US war crimes committed in Iraq. The prosecution has said it is seeking a sentence of “only” life in prison. Manning has not yet entered a plea or decided whether to be tried by a judge or a jury.

Permalink Flame and Stuxnet: Two cyber weapons unleashed by same master

Those who commissioned the malware Flame also created the deadly Stuxnet, say Kaspersky Labs, who have discovered an identical piece of code in both worms. What appeared to be two unrelated programs are probably part of the same cyberwar campaign.

"The new findings that reveal how the teams shared the source code of at least one module in the early stages of development prove that the groups co-operated at least once," wrote Aleksandr Gostev, chief security expert for Russian security company Kaspersky Labs. Flame, which was discovered only last month, despite operating for several years, is a cyber-espionage program. After infiltrating computer systems through hundreds of possible vulnerabilities, it records all of the user’s information, from printed documents to voices recorded on the microphone. In contrast, Stuxnet is a weapon. In 2010 it was used to damage uranium enrichment centrifuges in Iran. In fact, Iran was by far the most popular destination for both of the targeted worms, which experts deemed the most sophisticated ever discovered. Kaspersky Labs believes the two worms were developed by independent groups controlled by the same party.
