Permalink Dominionism's Threat Against Indian Country

Native American Grandmothers resist relocation at Big Mountain part 2. Religion and state have united to assimilate the American Indian in the past, such as with Ulysses S. Grant's Peace Policy that created the Indian Boarding Schools, and in more recent times such as "'pro-Peabody Western Coal' Indians and obtaining a false 'Hopi-Navajo' Tribal Counsel designation by the Bureau of Indian Affairs..." who were several First Mesa Hopi who had been converted to Mormonism. 'Problems cannot be solved at the same level of awareness that created them,' and you cannot change what you do not acknowledge. [You Tube]

Permalink Obama to seek changes in Pell Grants

WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama's budget plan would cut $100 billion from Pell Grants over a decade through belt-tightening but use the savings to keep the maximum college financial aid award at $5,550, an administration official said. Most of the projected savings, more than $90 billion, would be achieved through two changes, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity ahead of Monday's release of Obama's 2012 budget. The spending plan applies to the budget year that begins Oct. 1. Congress would have to approve both changes.

Permalink Mubarak in life/death state in Germany hospital

We have learned through foreign sources that Hosni Mubarak was flown this morning to a Baden hospital in Germany after falling into a coma. The report was confirmed this morning by Bahrain daily Al Wasat who indicated that just prior to leaving for his resort in Sharm-el-Sheikh, Mubarak became comatose. Apparently, prior to delivering his last speech on national Egyptian television, we also learned that Mubarak had fainted. This is the explanation given for the delay between the announcement of his anticipated speech and his actual appearance several hours later. His fragile state of health was also cited as the reason for which the army did not insist that he leave earlier.

Permalink A US official told The Sunday Telegraph: “Hosni Mubarak used the 18 days it took for protesters to topple him to shift his vast wealth into untraceable accounts overseas, Western intelligence sources have said…

The former Egyptian president is accused of amassing a fortune of more than £3 billion – although some suggest it could be as much as £40 billion – during his 30 years in power. It is claimed his wealth was tied up in foreign banks, investments, bullion and properties in London, New York, Paris and Beverly Hills. In the knowledge his downfall was imminent, Mr Mubarak is understood to have attempted to place his assets out of reach of potential investigators.

Permalink Egypt military dissolves parliament

Egypt's new military rulers have dissolved the parliament and suspended the constitution days after a historic revolution ousted President Hosni Mubarak. Parliament was dominated by Mubarak's ruling National Democratic Party. The military also announced that it would stay in power in the six months before a civilian government is elected, a Press TV correspondent reported. The military rulers also plan to form a committee to draft a new constitution for the country. The measures were announced as protesters re-gathered in Cairo's Liberation Square after being dispersed by security forces on Sunday.

Permalink Egyptians take pride and joy in cleaning up Tahir Square post their great victory

CAIRO - Egyptian protesters turned from toppling a president to rebuilding a country they believe is once again theirs and cleaning up Tahrir Square, where many vowed to stay to hold their new military rulers to account.

Thousands were back in the square Saturday celebrating the fall of President Hosni Mubarak, whose three decades in office ended with a terse statement read out on television Friday night. Some picked up brooms and swept the streets, others took down tents, smiling and chatting about their new political era. Among them were those determined to stay, waiting for a clear signal from the army that promised reforms would be implemented.

"We won't leave because we have to make sure this country is set on the right path," said Ahmed Saber, 27, who is unemployed. "We won't let the armed forces ride the success of our revolution."

Many Egyptians who had not joined the 18 days of protests in Tahrir came to help clean up. Groups of men, women and children wore vests with a "Proudly Cleaning Egypt" sign on the back as national songs blared out of speakers.

Permalink What Egypt Can Teach America

The truth is that the United States has been behind the curve not only in Tunisia and Egypt for the last few weeks, but in the entire Middle East for decades. We supported corrupt autocrats as long as they kept oil flowing and weren’t too aggressive toward Israel. Even in the last month, we sometimes seemed as out of touch with the region’s youth as a Ben Ali or a Mubarak. Recognizing that crafting foreign policy is 1,000 times harder than it looks, let me suggest four lessons to draw from our mistakes.

Permalink Leaked e-mails embarrass German far-right party

NaziLeak: The leak of thousands of confidential e-mails from members of Germany's far-right National Democratic Party shows the group is soaked in racist and neo-Nazi ideology... and illegally misappropriates public funds. Thousands of leaked private e-mails have embarrassed the German far-right National Democratic Party (NPD). The data, which were leaked to several German media organizations, reveal some of the inner workings of the xenophobic, nationalist fringe party.

One example of the prevalence of neo-Nazi ideology among party members was revealed in their use of the code "88" - popular among neo-Nazis as an abbreviation of the Nazi-era slogan "Heil Hitler." "H" is the eighth letter of the alphabet and "88" is taken to stand for "HH." The e-mails also reveal extensive infighting around the recent merger of the NPD with the like-minded German People's Union (DVU). The leaked correspondence, made up of some 60,000 e-mails, reveals a strong adherence to neo-Nazi ideology and betrays the party's attempts to present itself as a more moderate political group on the right wooing voters disgruntled with the country's main conservative Christian Democrats.
