Permalink More homeless-feeding arrests in Ft. Lauderdale amid national backlash

Police break up homeless feeding at Stranahan Park. It was another round of citations and arrests from Fort Lauderdale police who broke up a homeless feeding at Stranahan Park. A 17-year-old, 25-year old Nikki Rye and a third person were among those with "Food Not Bombs" in trouble with authorities. "I was laughing. I thought you know this is a sick joke," said the 17-year-old minor who was cuffed and taken away. "They can't stop us from feeding people." Rye walked out of jail with a notice to appear. She said the corrections and police officers inside were also upset about her arrest and sent her off with the notice.

Permalink Olmert: Ehud Barak pocketed millions in bribes from arms sales

Channel 10 airs tapes in which former PM is heard telling his aide that Barak hid the money overseas. Barak's office: Claims are unfounded. Israel's Channel 10 revealed audio tapes on Friday in which former Prime Minister Ehud Olmert is heard accusing former Prime Minister Ehud Barak of profiting for arms sales and hiding money in offshore accounts. The conversation – part of the tapes recorded by Olmert's former aide Shula Zaken – took place on July 2011. Olmert and Zaken were talking about the "Rishon Tours" affair – in which Olmert was suspected of illegally double-billing charities for the same flights booked – at which point Olmert began to speak about Barak's lavish lifestyle. He told Zaken how envious Barak was of Olmert's Audi A8. "But he'll end up in jail," Olmert says, "remember what I'm telling you Shula." [...] There is no evidence backing the claims made in the recording, and it should be noted that the relationship between Olmert and Barak has been notoriously sour...

Permalink Oops, Mr President! CNN typo 'Navy SEAL killed Obama' has Twitter in stitches (VIDEO)

CNN has accidently “killed” President barack Obama instead of Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden in one of its shows. For nearly a minute, CNN displayed a headline with a typo that viewers just could not miss. The channel’s Erin Burnett OutFront show was dedicated to Robert O'Neill, a Navy SEAL, who is claiming to be the one to [allegedly] have shot and killed Osama bin Laden in the 2011 raid on a Pakistani compound. CNN eventually replaced "Obama" with "Bin Laden" in the headline, but it was little too late – its viewers had enough time to take pictures of their TV screens and record video to share them online.

Permalink Khorasan: Pentagon Says Fantasy Terror Group Bombed to Protect Homeland

Pentagon peddles debunked Khorasan myth. Previous attempts attributed to al-Qaeda’s supposed master bomber, Ibrahim al-Asiri, resulted in the fizzle bomb unleashed by Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, aka the Nigerian underwear bomber, and the cargo plane bombs allegedly discovered at the last minute by Saudi Arabia’s security boss on October 29, 2010. Khorasan, however, like its exaggerated explosives – including undetectable bombs inserted in the rectums of suicide bombers – does not exist. “You haven’t heard of the Khorasan Group because there isn’t one,” writes Andrew C. McCarthy. “It is a name the administration came up with, calculating that Khorasan — the Iranian–Afghan border region — had sufficient connection to jihadist lore that no one would call the president on it.”

Permalink Berlin Wall 25th Anniversary: Hipster King Klaus Wowereit Rebuilt Berlin on Champagne and Anarchy

Looking back on his tenure (as a Mayor), Wowereit views the atmosphere he inculcated as his most important legacy, one which has ripped through the old divisions and driven away the negative energy of the Cold War era. Today, he says, "Germany's capital stands for many different qualities, the most prominent of which is tolerance. Today, he says, "Germany's capital stands for many different qualities, the most prominent of which is tolerance. "There's a lot of energy in Berlin. Creative professionals and talented people from all over the world come to Berlin, where they discover the scope and space our city offers. They start businesses, and they move Berlin forward – as an outward-looking, tolerant metropolis. It no longer makes a difference whether a particular place used to be in the east or the west."

Permalink Why is the media silent on the continuing shakeup in the US nuclear command?

Bill Van Auken The US mass media and the country’s political officials have shown a remarkable lack of interest in what the Pentagon acknowledged earlier this week was the unprecedented simultaneous firing of two senior commanders at two separate Air Force Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) bases and the administrative disciplining of a third. Major news outlets, to the extent that they carried the story at all, relied solely on the item prepared by the Associated Press, and for the most part buried even that. The AP got the story by calling the Air Force public information office. No follow-up was done by the New York Times, the Washington Post or any other major newspaper or television network to probe the significance of these disciplinary actions in terms of the extreme state of crisis that has pervaded Washington’s nuclear strike force for well over a year. Why the silence? By tacit agreement, clearly secrets are being kept about the real state of affairs within a military command whose nuclear war-fighting mission constitutes one of the single greatest threats to the survival of humanity. The crisis in the US nuclear war command has now been unfolding for over one year, involving the sudden sackings of top commanders and senior officers, as well as the snaring of fully 20 percent of the ICBM missile launch crew members in a cheating scandal and the implication of several others in the use of illegal drugs.
