Permalink Federal Reserve Shipped Billions to Iraq Which Were Then Stolen ... Involved in Other Unsavory Activities

Bernanke Is Either Not Very Bright or Not Very Honest. He Admits He Doesn’t Know Why We Have a Weak Economy … But He’s the One Who Weakened It. - The Los Angeles Times reported on June 13th:

For the first time, federal auditors are suggesting that some or all of the cash may have been stolen, not just mislaid in an accounting error. Stuart Bowen, special inspector general for Iraq reconstruction, an office created by Congress, said the missing $6.6 billion may be "the largest theft of funds in national history."

***

Theft of such a staggering sum might seem unlikely, but U.S. officials aren't ruling it out. Some U.S. contractors were accused of siphoning off tens of millions in kickbacks and graft during the post-invasion period, especially in its chaotic early days. But Iraqi officials were viewed as prime offenders.

The Federal Reserve has been involved in other unsavory activities as well, such as lending billions to Gaddaffi and covering up the source of funding for the Watergate burglars. Geithner's New York Fed also pushed to keep pay AIG's CDS counterparties at full value, and then to keep the deal secret.

Permalink Global Oil Reserves Tapped in Effort to Cut Cost at Pump

WASHINGTON — The United States will lead an international effort to release 60 million barrels of petroleum reserves to world markets, replacing some of the oil production lost because of the conflict in Libya, the International Energy Agency announced in Paris on Thursday. - The action is aimed at stabilizing global oil supplies and reducing energy prices for businesses and consumers, and by early afternoon futures contracts for West Texas intermediate crude oil were down $4.46 to $90.95 a barrel. Of the total amount of oil to be released, about half would come from reserves in the United States, with the rest to be provided by other nations among the international agency’s 28 member states. Negotiations for the coordinated response have been going on in secret for weeks, according to a person involved in the talks. Similar unified action was taken in 1991 at the outbreak of the first Persian Gulf War.

Permalink US in Afghanistan: 30000 go, 70000 stay

US President Barack Obama has announced plans to begin withdrawing US troops from Afghanistan in July and bring 33,000 soldiers back by next summer, amid climbing pressures to end the American engagement in the war-torn country. - In a televised speech on Wednesday, Obama declared that by the end of the current year, 10,000 US troops will be pulled out of Afghanistan and another 23,000 of the forces would be withdrawn by the summer of 2012. According to the plan, nearly 70,000 US military forces would still remain the troubled country, which continues to struggle with widespread insecurity, climbing terrorism and record levels of narcotics production and trade, despite a nearly 10-year presence of US-led foreign forces that vowed to bring security and stability to the state. The US has established permanent military bases in Afghanistan. Over the past months, it has secretly carried out construction expansions within its existing military facilities in the country, reflecting a preparatory effort for a long-term presence in the war-ravaged nation.

Permalink Wilders Cleared of Incitement Charges

The Right to Criticize Islam - A Dutch court on Thursday acquitted controversial right-wing populist politician Geert Wilders on all charges relating to anti-Islamic statements he made in his films and on the Internet. The court said Wilders' comments had been part of a legitimate public debate. - After nearly six months, a trial against Dutch firebrand Geert Wilders ended Thursday in Amsterdam. A court acquitted the right-wing populist politician on charges of incitement, racial hatred and discrimination against Muslims. In his verdict, leading judge Marcel van Oosten said that, while Wilders' statements were indeed offensive to Muslims, they were also part of the legitimate political debate. Wilders' claim that Islam is a violent religion and his demands for an immigration ban for Muslims had to be viewed in the context of the larger societal debate about immigration policies, the judge argued. He said the statements could not be directly blamed for increasing levels of discrimination against Dutch Muslims.

Permalink Nuclear experts killed in Russia plane crash helped design Iran facility

The five Russian scientists were among 44 killed earlier this week; no official investigation of foul play has been opened, though Iranian nuclear experts have in the past been involved in similar accidents. - The experts - who included lead designers Sergei Rizhov, Gennadi Benyok, Nicolai Tronov and Russia's top nuclear technological experts, Andrei Tropinov - worked at Bushehr after the contract for the plant's construction passed from the German Siemens company to Russian hands. The five were employed at the Hydropress factory, a member of Russia's state nuclear corporation, and one of the main companies to contracted for the Bushehr construction. The sources said that the death of the scientists is a great blow to the Russian nuclear industry.

Permalink Israel Escalates Demolitions of Palestinian Homes in West Bank

Israeli human rights group B’Tselem has issued a new report detailing the government’s dramatic escalation in the number of Palestinian home demolitions in the Jordan Valley, part of the eastern West Bank. - According to the report, the Israeli government has demolished 103 homes there so far this year, after 86 were demolished in all of 2010 and only 28 in 2009. The moves in the first six months of this year have left more than 700 Palestinians homeless. The area, as with the rest of the West Bank, was occupied by Israel in 1967. Since then, the Israeli government has been repeatedly criticized for forced evictions and harsh military restrictions over Palestinian movement. B’Tselem warned that the current policy of escalating demolitions amounted to a “de facto annexation of the Jordan Valley.” The Netanyahu government has ruled out allowing the Jordan Valley to be part of an independent Palestinian state, and insists rather that it is part of Israel’s “border with Jordan.”

Permalink China warns US to stay out of maritime spat

China on Wednesday warned the United States to stay out of the deepening territorial spat in the South China Sea and accused other countries in the region of provocation, a report said. - Vice foreign minister Cui Tiankai said neighbouring countries, including Vietnam, were responsible for recent incidents in the disputed waters and dismissed calls for Washington to play a greater role in resolving tensions. "I believe some countries now are playing with fire. And I hope the US won't be burned by this fire," Cui was quoted by the Wall Street Journal saying. Tensions between China and other rival claimants to the strategically vital waters -- home to two potentially oil-rich archipelagos, the Paracels and Spratlys -- have escalated in recent weeks.

Permalink Funeral for civilians that NATO killed in Sorman Jun 22 2011 - Video

NATO attack killed 19 people, including three children. On Sunday, NATO copped to killing at least nine civilians in a strike in Central Tripoli, blaming a "weapons system failure," but when a second incident in the suburb of Sorman came out the very next morning, they angrily denied involvement, saying warplanes weren't even operating near the area. NATO has now abandoned that denial and admits that they did attack the compound in Sorman, claiming it was a military "command and control" center. Media were taken to the site yesterday and shown the bodies of civilians, including children.

Permalink The black hole of war: where is the money going?

Not only is the American imperialistic military machine incredibly ineffectual in their armed nation building efforts across the Middle East, the military has also been directly involved in the swindling of billions. This, unfortunately, is in addition to the billions of dollars spent monthly keeping our fellow American citizens in the line of fire fighting for the profits of the elite. - The wars our government is waging in our names around the world are taking the lives of members of our Armed services while also sucking up absurd amounts of taxpayer funds which we will likely never see any return on. This is most prevalent in the past decade’s nation building efforts, all of which have been failures by most metrics. The billions of dollars being funneled into these nations will likely never be paid back, and if it is, it will be in no less than a decade. In a Commission on Wartime Contracting in Iraq and Afghanistan report published June 3rd, 2011, many disturbing statistics are revealed. Essentially, the above report shows that there are tens of billions of taxpayer dollars that will disappear into the black hole of war if the governments of Iraq and Afghanistan cannot successfully take over operations. Just a single program in Afghanistan could potentially cost us $11 billion. Obviously the total potential losses are much larger than this figure based on just one program. We must also assume that these numbers are somewhat conservative given they were provided by the federal government.

Permalink Boehner: House Might Refuse to Authorize Libya War

House Speaker John Boehner (R – OH) has warned today that if put to a vote, the House of Representatives would likely not support a resolution authorizing the Obama Administration’s War in Libya in its current form. - Rather the House is considering a pair of proposals, one that would authorize the war for a year and another that would require the administration to limit its role in the war to purely support efforts, banning the administration from launching its own attacks.

Permalink Congress Invested in Defense Contracts

The nonpartisan Center for Responsive Politics has calculated that more than 151 members of Congress have up to $195 million invested in major defense contractors that are earning profits from the US military occupations in Iraq and Afghanistan.

[Opensecrets, April 3, 2008] When General David Petraeus, the top US military officer in Iraq, went to Capitol Hill to brief Congress in April of 2008, he was addressing lawmakers who had a lot more than just a political stake in the Iraq occupation. Along with their colleagues in the House and Senate, the politicians who got a status report from the general and the US ambassador to Iraq had millions of dollars of their own money invested in companies doing business with the Department of Defense (DoD). In 2006, the investment portfolios of 151 current members—more than a quarter of Congress—had between $78.7 million and $195.5 million invested in companies that received major defense contracts (over $5 million). The portfolios include holdings in companies paid billions of dollars each month to support America’s military. These companies provided almost everything the military uses, from aircraft and weapons to medical supplies and soft drinks.

Senator John Kerry (D-Mass.) and House Representative James Sensenbrenner (R-Wis.), two of Congress’s wealthiest members, were among the lawmakers who earned the most from their investments in defense contractors between 2004 and 2006, with Sensenbrenner making at least $3.2 million and Kerry reaping at least $2.6 million. Permalink The Financial Collapse Of Greece: The Canary In The Coal Mine For The Global Economy?

The rest of the world needs to sit up and take notice of what is going on in Greece right now. This is what can happen when you allow government debt to spiral out of control. Once it becomes clear that you can't pay your debts, a financial collapse can happen very suddenly and you start losing your sovereignty to those that you must turn to for financial help. So is the financial collapse of Greece the "canary in the coal mine" for the global economy? EU finance ministers have given the Greek government two weeks from Monday to approve another round of brutal austerity measures. If the austerity measures are not approved, Greece will not receive the next bailout installment of 12 billion euros. If that happens, the whole globe better buckle up because it is going to get crazy.

July 3rd is the deadline. Basically the EU has put a gun to the head of the Greek government. Without this bailout money, Greece will default and economic hell will break loose all across the country. It is important to keep in mind that this is just the first Greek bailout that we are talking about. Last year, the EU and the IMF agreed to provide the Greek government with a 110 billion euro bailout. The current 12 billion euro installment is part of that package.

Permalink Ross: “Israel Must Remain Jewish State”

Dennis Ross, senior aide to American President, Barack Obama, stated during a speech in Jerusalem, Wednesday, that all steps must be taken to ensure that Israel “remains a democratic and Jewish State”. - His statements were made during the Israeli Presidential Conference, “Global Perspective for Tomorrow”, in Jerusalem. He said that Israel and the Palestinians must realize the urgency of resuming the stalled peace process. He also called for halting what he dubbed as “the attempts to delegitimatize Israel” referring to the legitimate international BDS (Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions) campaigns targeting Israel's policies and violations in the occupied Palestinian territories. Ross added that peace talks “will lead to a Palestinian state within the 1967 borders, with some modifications on borders due to changes the region witnesses in the last 44 years.

Ross did not refer to Israel's illegal settlements in occupied Palestine, especially in occupied East Jerusalem, and refrained from referring to East Jerusalem as an occupied city that should be part of any peace agreement. He also did not refer to the internationally guaranteed Right of Return of the Palestinian refugees displaced from their homes and homeland when Israel was created in Palestine in 1948.

Permalink Sanders: ’5 million seniors face the threat of hunger’

WASHINGTON – A 12-page report released Tuesday by Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) found that about 5 million senior citizens are threatened by hunger in the United States. - "It is estimated that 5 million seniors face the threat of hunger, 3 million seniors are at risk of hunger, and 1 million seniors go hungry because they cannot afford to buy food," Sanders said Tuesday during a Senate hearing, summing up the findings. According to the report, the average cost of a meal brought to a senior's home is just over $5. By contrast, the average cost of spending a day in the hospital is more than $1,850, while the average yearly cost of care at a nursing home is over $77,700. The tone of the Sanders hearing -- called the "Senior Hunger and the Older Americans Act" and held by the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Subcommittee on Primary Health & Aging, which Sanders chairs -- provided a stark contrast to the political debate on Capitol Hill about cutting programs for the elderly like Social Security and Medicare.

Permalink Israeli undercover agents boast of killing Palestinians on TV

JERUSALEM (Ma'an) -- Undercover Israeli intelligence officers appeared on national television Saturday to talk about assassinating Palestinians in a program broadcast on Israel's Channel 10.

[H/T: Gilad Atzmon] Oren Beaton presented a photo album of Palestinians he killed during his time as a commander of an undercover Israeli unit operating in the northern West Bank city of Nablus. Beaton explained that he kept photos of his victims. "This is a photo of a Palestinian young man called Basim Subeih who I killed. This is another young man. I shredded his body, and the photo shows the remnants of his body," he said.

The TV program also featured an undercover agent referred to as "D", who openly admitted killing "wanted Palestinians." He complained of suffering from post traumatic stress disorder and said that the state had rejected his demands for compensation.

The report was filmed in the Palestinian territories, and showed agents wandering around the streets of Ar-Ram in occupied East Jerusalem with handguns under their shirts, illustrating that the agents were still operating in Palestinian cities. The agents, who speak fluent Arabic, are shown surrounded by masked Palestinian collaborators secretly deployed to the area to protect them.

The program provided previously unconfirmed details about the operational methods of undercover agents. The report explained that officers conducted surveillance before an assassination, investigating the target's friends and classmates. Agents would even ask about the target's favorite meals and habits at home, the report said. In this way, agents would put together an image of the target's behavior and routine.

Agent "D" said officers would then "seize the target and wait until the commander arrives to confirm his identity. Then we shoot him." This confirms previous accounts from Palestinians who have said they witnessed Israeli agents shooting Palestinians at point-blank range.
