Permalink World lacks will to stop Israel

The global community does not have the will to enforce international laws demanding an end to Israel's occupation of Palestine, says an international law expert.

“We do not see a clear will from the international community and the United Nations to implement the clear decisions of the United Nations, which include an Israeli withdrawal from the occupied territories, and the return of all the [Palestinian] refugees, both the ones that have been displaced during the Nakba and the Naksa,” Munir Nuseibah, international law expert, from London told Press TV on Sunday.

“[The] international law does give answers. For example, in 2004, we had a very clear decision from the International Court of Justice against the wall that Israel built within the occupied [Palestinian] territory. And this decision, this advisory opinion, said that every country that signed the Geneva Convention has a legal obligation to do everything in its capacity to stop and reverse [the building of] this wall. However, until today, we can see that this has not taken place,” Nuseibah added.

On Sunday, thousands of Syrian and Palestinian protesters flocked to Syria's Golan Heights on Naksa Day, to mark the 44th anniversary of the beginning of Israel's 1967 Six-Day War.

Israeli forces opened fire on the pro-Palestinian protesters from Syria who approached the occupied territories, killing at least 23 people, including a woman and a child, and injuring 350 others, according to the Syrian TV.

Permalink Libyan "rebels" accused of arbitrary arrests, torture

As NATO airstrikes continue to pound pro-government facilities in Libya, Human Rights Watch charged Sunday that Libyan rebels are arbitrarily detaining dozens of civilians suspected of loyalty to ruler Moammar Gadhafim, holding them without trial or due process. At least one person is thought to have died in custody, with his body showing signs of torture, the group said in a report based on visits to rebel-held parts of Libya. It is difficult to tell exactly how many civilians are being held without charge because some are held by militias and because the rebels do not clearly distinguish between civilian detainees and captured pro-Gadhafi fighters, Human Rights Watch said.

Apache Helicopters take off to attack Libya

Latest reports indicate that NATO-led warplanes have dropped several bombs on the offices of the Libyan state broadcaster in the capital Tripoli.

The Libyan information ministry said the NATO jets struck the state broadcaster's building and its adjoining installations on Monday. No detail has been given on possible deaths or injuries. Reports say NATO jets have inflicted heavy damage to the government buildings located in the troubled area. NATO has conducted thousands of sorties over Libya since it assumed control of a military campaign to impose a no-fly zone over the country and save civilian lives in late March. The US and NATO have unleashed a punishing, UN-mandated offensive [no mandate for dropping bombs over Libya] against Libyan ruler Muammar Gaddafi to pressure him into giving up power.

Permalink US House leaders block resolution against Libya war

Top Republicans and Democrats in the House of Representatives joined forces Friday to defeat a resolution that would have demanded an end to US military operations in Libya within 15 days. The resolution was voted down 148 to 265, with both House Speaker John Boehner, the leading Republican, and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, the leading Democrat, opposing it. Majorities of both parties backed the continuation of the war, although a significantly higher percentage of Democrats took the pro-war position. The Republicans split 144 to 87, while the Democrats divided 121 to 61.

Congressman Dennis Kucinich of Ohio, a liberal Democrat and former presidential candidate, introduced the resolution, which would have had the force of law if passed by both the House and the Senate. It declared Obama to be in violation of the War Powers Act, the 1973 legislation adopted in the wake of the Vietnam War to make future undeclared wars subject to congressional approval.

Permalink Test results expected in E. coli probe; German sprouts suspected

Berlin (CNN) -- Test results expected Monday could determine whether sprouts grown in Germany are the source of a deadly E. coli outbreak that has killed 22 people.

But authorities said they might not find any evidence of E. coli if it affected only a batch of bad sprouts and is no longer in the supply chain. On Sunday, officials said German-grown sprouts are the likely source for the E. coli outbreak. Gert Lindemann, agricultural minister in the state of Lower Saxony, said there is a "direct link" between a company in the town of Bienenbuettel and "these people getting sick." The firm has been shut down and its products have been recalled, Lindemann said. It is not immediately clear how the E. coli strain may have gotten into the sprouts, officials said.

Permalink Embattled Yemeni president Ali Abdullah Saleh urged to make exit deal

"West" insists president quits in exchange for immunity from prosecution and financial guarantees about future.

The United States and Britain are pressing Saudi Arabia to persuade the Yemeni president, Ali Abdullah Saleh, to formally stand down after flying to Riyadh for treatment for injuries that were sustained in shelling in Sana'a on Friday. Diplomats said that Washington and London were insisting that Saleh now be urged to implement a deal under which he would relinquish power in exchange for immunity from prosecution and financial guarantees about his future. Pro-democracy protestors in Yemen were celebrating his departure after 33 years in power, but the Arab world's poorest country still faces turmoil as well as immediate concerns over whether a truce will hold if Saleh tries to return and his relatives and supporters fight back.
