Permalink 18 veterans commit suicide each day

Troubling new data show there are an average of 950 suicide attempts each month by veterans who are receiving some type of treatment from the Veterans Affairs Department. Seven percent of the attempts are successful, and 11 percent of those who don’t succeed on the first attempt try again within nine months. The numbers, which come at a time when VA is strengthening its suicide prevention programs, show about 18 veteran suicides a day, about five by veterans who are receiving VA care. Access to care appears to be a key factor, officials said, noting that once a veteran is inside the VA care program, screening programs are in place to identify those with problems, and special efforts are made to track those considered at high risk, such as monitoring whether they are keeping appointments. A key part of the new data shows the suicide rate is lower for veterans aged 18 to 29 who are using VA health care services than those who are not. That leads VA officials to believe that about 250 lives have been saved each year as a result of VA treatment. Permalink Judge Rules Yemeni’s Detention at Guantánamo Based Solely on Torture

Judge Kennedy’s opinion was released a month ago [.pdf] but was then abruptly withdrawn, and, perhaps with unnecessary delicacy, I held off from analyzing it, waiting for it to be reissued, as I was uncertain how much would be redacted. When the revised opinion was finally released on April 21 [.pdf], I realized that the name of a criminal investigator with the Naval Criminal Investigative Service had been removed, as had other named operatives, but that other key elements had not; specifically, the names of two other prisoners who alleged that Uthman "acted as a bodyguard for Osama bin Laden." These two men are Sharqwi Abdu Ali al-Hajj and Sanad Yislam Ali al-Kazimi, and in the most important part of the opinion, Judge Kennedy stated, "The Court will not rely on the statements of Hajj or Kazimi because there is unrebutted evidence in the record that, at the time of the interrogations at which they made the statements, both men had recently been tortured." Permalink Russian Scientist: Expect Cooling – Pols Sitting On The Wrong Horse

In the German edition of Ria Novosti, Russian scientist Oleg Pokrovsky of the Main Geophysical Observatory says the world should expect cooling – and not warming – and that this will interfere with Russia’s plans to exploit the Arctic’s rich resources. The climate has been cooling since 1998. At a climate research conference for the Arctic and Antarctic in St. Petersburg, Friday, Pokrovsky said the Earth’s temperature fluctuates in 60-year cycles.

There isn’t going to be an ice age, but temperatures will drop to levels last seen in the 1950s and 1960s. Right now all components of the climate system are entering a negative phase. The cooling will reach it’s peak in 15 years. Politicians who have geared up for warming are sitting on the wrong horse.

Permalink Japanese set for mass rally in Okinawa

Thousands of Japanese demonstrators in Okinawa are set to hold a massive rally against a controversial US military base on their island. At least 100,000 demonstrators, including Okinawa governor Hirokazu Nakaima and more than 30 town mayors will protest the continued presence of the US Marine Corps' Futenama Airbase, which under a 2006 pact with Washington was simply removed from the city of Ginowan to the quieter coastal area of Henoko rather than removed from Okinawa altogether.

Permalink Matt Taibbi : Will Goldman Sachs prove greed is God?

The investment bank's cult of self-interest is on trial against the whole idea of civilisation – the collective decision by all of us not to screw each other over even if we can. So Goldman Sachs, the world's greatest and smuggest investment bank, has been sued for fraud by the American Securities and Exchange Commission. Legally, the case hangs on a technicality. Morally, however, the Goldman Sachs case may turn into a final referendum on the greed-is-good ethos that conquered America sometime in the 80s – and in the years since has aped other horrifying American trends such as boybands and reality shows in spreading across the western world like a venereal disease. Permalink The Radical "Muslim" Group That Threatened South Park Creators Was Founded and Run by Joseph Cohen, a Former Israeli Radical Who Used to Live in a Settlement in the West Bank

South Park ran an unedited image of Muhammad in 2001 in an episode called “Super Best Friends“… and nothing happened.

In fact, the episode had been on the South Park website for viewing at any time for the past few years (they just removed it)… and nothing happened.

For 4 seasons they had that image in their opening segment for every single show… and nothing happened.

So for years on end no Muslim group, “radical” or otherwise, has threatened Matt and Trey or Comedy Central about the image of Muhammad that has been available for all to see every single day.

All of a sudden last week a group called “Revolution Muslim” threatened violence against Comedy Central if they aired an image of Muhammad which forced Comedy Central to censor the show and now you have even liberals talking about those “radical Muslims” and their threats of violence. Karl Rove couldn’t have done it any better.

Permalink PALESTINE: THE UNVANQUISHED

The following article was composed in 2004, thus it is approximately 6 years old; Though it may be considered old and worn, further reading proves that every premise is still applicable. A new wall is being built, dubbed ‘The Wall of Shame’, in order to stifle the people of Gaza – blocking the only way in which they may bring in food and supplies. Are some of these items weapons? Yes.

I see no problem in terms of also using the tunnels to bring in weapons and anyone who wants to question my own position may do so; Israel receives an unimaginable amount of money – Billions of Dollars – from the United States. It is,by definition, a welfare state. Over 60% of what they receive is then used for weapons; Palestinians, just like any other people, have the right to defend themselves – regardless of what the imperialist entities (US-Israel) say.
