Permalink Cable ties Kissinger to Chile assassinations

As secretary of state, Henry Kissinger canceled a U.S. warning against carrying out international political assassinations that was to have gone to Chile and two neighboring nations just days before a former ambassador was killed by Chilean agents on Washington's Embassy Row in 1976, a newly released State Department cable shows. Discovered in recent weeks by the National Security Archive, a non-profit research organization, the Sept. 16, 1976 cable is among tens of thousands of declassified State Department documents recently made available to the public. Based on information from the CIA, the U.S. State Department became concerned that Condor included plans for political assassination around the world. The State Department drafted a plan to deliver a stern message to the three governments not to engage in such murders. Chris Floyd: Home Free: No Worries for Dr K as Complicity is Revealed:

Poor old Henry Kissinger. All that botheration, all those lies, all the years of gut-churning anxiety about scandal, even prosecution -- and for what? Mere complicity in state murder of foreigners carried out by a foreign government? Why, nowadays, we have U.S. presidents openly ordering the murder of American citizens, and nobody bats an eye. There is no scandal, no prosecution -- there is not even any debate. It's just a fact of life, ordinary, normal, unchangeable: the sun rises in the east, cows eat grass, rain is wet, American presidents murder people. What's the big deal? Anyway, thank God good old Hank is still with us, and that this honorable public servant has lived to see the day when honorable public servants (and so are they all, all honorable public servants) no longer have to worry about the petty snares of law as they go about their sacred duty of keeping us safe.

Permalink Eugenics - the newest American export

Addicts are being offered up to £200 cash to be sterilised so they do not give birth to drug dependent children. A controversial American charity is now offering the service to addicts in the UK and has set up a helpline for those interested. Pro-life campaigners said the offer was "inhuman". Project Prevention claims to have stopped 3,500 drink and drugs addicts from having more children by paying them to be sterilised. It has now received £13,000 from an anonymous British donor to help launch a similar service in the UK. But the campaigner behind the scheme, Barbara Harris, from North Carolina, shrugged off concerns that the money will just be spent on buying more drugs.

Permalink Israel forces out Palestinians from WB

Israel orders the expulsion of Palestinians from the occupied West Bank under a new decree that describes tens of thousands of them as infiltrators. The order stipulates the expulsion of Palestinians whose ID cards bear home addresses in the Gaza Strip or those who were born in the West Bank or abroad but for various reasons have lost their residency status.

Under the new order which will come into force this week, the above mentioned people are defined as infiltrators, Haaretz reported. "A person is presumed to be an infiltrator if he is present in the area without a document or permit which attest to his lawful presence in the area without reasonable justification."

Under the order which puts Palestinians under the sole jurisdiction of Israeli military courts, tens of thousands of residents of the West Bank will be forced out or will be indicted on charges carrying prison terms of up to seven years. According to the order, the term infiltrator will also be applied to Palestinian residents of Jerusalem al-Quds and citizens of countries with which Israel has friendly ties. Al Jazeera: Israeli order raises eviction risk.

[Editor's Comment:] In the photo, you can see two young "infiltrators" there in the doorway, on the left. They've probably infiltrated their own country from birth, as have their parents and their parents' parents before them...

Permalink Cows absolved of causing global warming with nitrous oxide

In the past environmentalists, from Lord Stern to Sir Paul McCartney, have urged people to stop eating meat because the methane produced by cattle causes global warming. However a new study found that cattle grazed on the grasslands of China actually reduce another greenhouse gas, nitrous oxide. Authors of the paper, published in Nature, say the research does not mean that producing livestock to eat is good for the environment in all countries. However in certain circumstances, it can be better for global warming to let animals graze on grassland.

Permalink This isn't just a war for my freedom but for Israel's image

[...] I had been told of Anat Kam's arrest earlier, in China, where I landed with my partner at the beginning of December. When I left Israel I had no reason to believe our planned trip would suddenly turn into a spy movie whose end is not clear. I certainly didn't think I'd have to stay in London and wouldn't be able to return to Tel Aviv as a journalist and a free man, only because I published reports that were not convenient to the establishment. But the troubling information from Israel left me with no alternative. AWIP/Jonathan Cook: The dark underbelly of Israel's security state.
