Permalink US Congress debates spy in the sky drones

The US Congress has started a debate over the proposal to send thousands of surveillance drones into the sky in the United States. - Republican and Democratic congressmen told the House of Representatives on Thursday and Friday that that they're concerned about potential privacy and security threats as the use of unmanned aircraft becomes extensive. The Federal Aviation Administration has estimated that about 10,000 civilian drones will be flying in the United States for surveillance purposes by 2017. “When we see a drone in the air, it should be no surprise to us. Now is the time to start, not 2015,” Congressman Ted Poe, a Texas Republican and former judge, said on Friday.

as well...The message is blindingly clear.

Surveillance State Mascot For The 2012 Olympics Has A Huge Camera Eye That 'Records Everything'

Olympic mascots are often controversial. Usually this is because they are weird blobby cartoon characters with goofy names that seem to have been dreamed up by creators who mainlined Mountain Dew Code Red while watching 24 straight hours of Pokemon. The official mascot for the 2012 Olympics, set in London, has that going for it but is also controversial for an entirely different reason. London, the premiere panoptic city was one of the first to blanket itself with CCTV cameras; its heavy security and surveillance cordon is nicknamed the Ring of Steel. London decided to make its surveillance yen a dominant feature of its otherwise goofy mascots. “Wenlock” and “Mandeville” both have a huge single eye made out of a camera lens so that they can “record everything.” Image at right is from the official London Olympics website. In case that’s too subtle for you, the Olympic organizers have offered a dress-up version of Wenlock in a policeman outfit. “This has to be a joke. Please let this be a joke,” tweeted a privacy enthusiast I follow on Twitter. [...] It is not in fact a joke.

The People's Voice: London unveils "Spirit of zionism" statue for 2012 Olympics [10/05/07] - The City of London today unveiled a giant sculpture named "Spirit of zionism" in a ceremony on Tuesday. The sculpture by 95-year-old acclaimed artist Louise Bourgeois is made of bronze, stainless steel and marble and was one of a series of six gargantuan spiders built in the 1990s, the first of which was called "Maman". "The piece, when you are inside of the sculpture, conveys the feeling of fear that is daily life for Palestinian families" said Burgeoise at the ceremony. Lord Mayor of London John Stuttard said that the sculpture was "in keeping with the ZION theme that we presented in our 2012 Games LOGO".Spirit of zionism

Permalink London Olympics 2012: HEAVY-HANDED security chiefs will ban Olympic spectators for wearing the wrong brand of clothes

London Olympics: Lord Coe's astonishing sponsors outburst. - Games boss Sebation Coe warned anyone wearing a Pepsi T-shirt is likely to be booted out because it would upset sponsors Coca-Cola. And he only said spectators in Nike trainers “could probably” be allowed in although Adidas are also backing the event. Coe defended the draconian move and said it was to protect corporate sponsors who have paid a fortune to be involved. It’s the latest example of a ruthless brand crackdown in the run-up to the London games. A cafe manager in London who displayed five bagels in the style of the Olympic rings was ordered to take them down. A butcher in Weymouth, Dorset, also had to take down five rings made from sausages. And police have been told to put sandwiches, crisps and chocolate in clear plastic bags to avoid breaking rules on advertising. The Nike swoosh logo has also been blocked out at Old Trafford before the Manchester stadium hosts the GB Olympic football team next week.

Permalink Little boy lost finds his mother using Google Earth

An Indian boy who lost his mother in 1986 has found her 25 years later from his new home in Tasmania - using satellite images.

Saroo was only five years old when he got lost. He was travelling with his older brother, working as a sweeper on India's trains. "It was late at night. We got off the train, and I was so tired that I just took a seat at a train station, and I ended up falling asleep." That fateful nap would determine the rest of his life. "I thought my brother would come back and wake me up but when I awoke he was nowhere to be seen. I saw a train in front of me and thought he must be on that train. So I decided to get on it and hoped that I would meet my brother." Saroo did not meet his brother on the train. Instead, he fell asleep and had a shock when he woke up 14 hours later. Though he did not realise it at first, he had arrived in Calcutta, India's third biggest city and notorious for its slums. "I was absolutely scared. I didn't know where I was. I just started to look for people and ask them questions."
