Permalink Six arrested in London over alleged terror plot

Three brothers from Stratford among those held in series of London police raids involving armed officers. - The three were among six individuals – including one woman – whom investigators arrested on Thursday. The group is understood to have included a former police and community support officer for the Metropolitan police, but Scotland Yard would not confirm that detail. The raids were carried out by counter-terrorism officers investigating a suspected plot to attack targets in Britain. Although police said they were not linked to any threat to the Olympics, officials say they will intervene quicker than usual in disrupting suspected plots in the runup to the event, which counter-terrorism forces fear is a major target. One person was shot with a Taser stun gun and Scotland Yard said armed officers had been deployed during the arrests, which is an unusual decision and indicative of the risk counter-terrorism chiefs thought officers faced in detaining the suspects.

Permalink Jorge Rafael Videla, Former Argentine Dictator, Convicted In Baby Thefts

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina -- Former Argentine dictator Jorge Rafael Videla has been convicted of executing a systematic plan to steal babies from prisoners who were kidnapped, tortured and killed during the military junta's war on leftist dissenters three decades ago. - The baby thefts set Argentina's 1976-1983 military junta apart from all the others that ruled in Latin America at the time. Videla and other Argentine military and police officials were determined to remove any trace of the armed leftist guerrilla movement that they felt threatened the country's future. The dirty war eventually claimed 13,000 victims according to official records. Many of them were pregnant women who gave birth in clandestine maternity wards.

Permalink Pakistan opposition parties blast govt. over NATO supply routes

Pakistan's mainstream political opposition parties have condemned Islamabad over the reopening of supply routes for the US-led NATO forces stationed in Afghanistan, Press TV reports. Leader of opposition in the country's National Assembly, Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, called the government's decision,

"a source of degradation and humiliation for Pakistan." "The inept rulers have made Pakistan a laughing stock in the world and through their latest move over reopening of the routes have made a mockery of the unanimous parliamentary resolutions," he said.

Khan also said his party and other opposition parties vow to launch anti-government demonstrations in all major cities of the country. Islamabad on Wednesday agreed to reopen land routes into Afghanistan and end a bitter months-long standoff with Washington after US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said she was sorry for the deaths of 24 Pakistani soldiers in an air strike in November 2011.

Permalink Romney made money from firm that disposed of aborted fetuses

Old Mitt’s Investment in a Fetus-Disposal Company Is Not a Great Thing for New Mitt - That Bain Capital investment in Stericycle, a medical-waste company that helps to dispose of aborted fetuses? When Huffington Post reported on it earlier this year, Bain officials insisted that Mitt Romney, the currently pro-life Republican presidential candidate, had already left Bain when it happened, in 1999. But a trove of financial filings uncovered by Mother Jones appears to show the very opposite:

The SEC filing lists assorted Bain-related entities that were part of the deal, including Bain Capital (BCI), Bain Capital Partners VI (BCP VI), Sankaty High Yield Asset Investors (a Bermuda-based Bain affiliate), and Brookside Capital Investors (a Bain offshoot). And it notes that Romney was the "sole shareholder, Chairman, Chief Executive Officer and President of BCI, BCP VI Inc., Brookside Inc. and Sankaty Ltd."

The document also states that Romney "may be deemed to share voting and dispositive power with respect to" 2,116,588 shares of common stock in Stericycle "in his capacity as sole shareholder" of the Bain entities that invested in the company...

Another SEC document filed November 30, 1999, by Stericycle also names Romney as an individual who holds "voting and dispositive power" with respect to the stock owned by Bain.
