Permalink Obama has moved war operations into Yemen

The U.S. and Britain closed their embassies in Yemen on Sunday in the face of al-Qaida threats, after both countries announced an increase in aid to the government to fight the terror group linked to the failed attempt to bomb a U.S. airliner on Christmas. Obama said Saturday that the al-Qaida offshoot was behind the attempt. In all probability the CIA and other US agencies were behind it, not this miserable patsy. Yemen has some crude oil left and natural gas, but more importantly, Yemen has a very strategic position in terms of free passage for oil tankers and United States Navy ships. -This has nothing to do with "Al Qaeda". Permalink Full body scanners, pushed by Homeland Security secretary Michael Chertoff, are manufactured by Chertoff's clients

Since the attempted bombing of a US airliner on Christmas Day, former Homeland Security secretary Michael Chertoff has given dozens of media interviews touting the need for the federal government to buy more full-body scanners for airports. What he has made little mention of is that the Chertoff Group, his security consulting agency, includes a client that manufactures the machines. Chertoff disclosed the relationship on a CNN program Wednesday, in response to a question.

Permalink Are planned airport scanners just a scam?

The explosive device smuggled in the clothing of the Detroit bomb suspect would not have been detected by body-scanners set to be introduced in British airports, an expert on the technology warned last night. The Independent on Sunday has also heard authoritative claims that officials at the Department for Transport (DfT) and the Home Office have already tested the scanners and were not persuaded that they would work comprehensively against terrorist threats to aviation. Permalink Outrage over Iceland plan to reimburse the losses of foreign investors in bank collapse using taxpayer money -- 12,000 euros per citizen

Almost a quarter of voters in Iceland have signed a petition against plans to repay money lost by foreigners when an Icelandic online bank collapsed. The petition urges the president to veto the bill that allows the move, and calls for a referendum on the issue. Iceland's parliament has approved the plans to reimburse 3.8bn euros (£3.4bn) lost by Dutch and British savers when the Icesave scheme failed in 2008. Many taxpayers say they are being made to pay for the bank's mistakes. The compensation amounts to some 12,000 euros for each citizen on the island nation of 320,000.

Permalink URGENT ISRAELI NAVY BLOCK VIVA PALESTINA AID CONVOY

I just got a message from the Derry to Gaza team on the Viva Palestina convoy with the latest developments which are not very good for the Convoy or Gaza, They are hearing that Israel will be performing "military" operations in the waters, and the convoy cannot pass through. This leaves them stranded and unable to make the deadline for crossing the Rafah border which Egypt has given them. When I get more updates I'll post them, that's it for now.

Permalink Swiss ETH: Glaciers melted in the 1940’s faster than today

The most recent studies by researchers at ETH Zurich show that in the 1940s Swiss glaciers were melting at an even-faster pace than at present. This is despite the fact that the temperatures in the 20th century were lower than in this century. Researchers see the main reason for this as the lower level of aerosol pollution in the atmosphere.

In Switzerland, the increase in snow in wintertime and the glacier melt in summertime have been measured at measurement points at around 3,000 metres above sea level – on the Clariden Firn, the Great Aletsch glacier and the Silvretta glacier – without interruption for almost 100 years. As part of his doctoral work, Matthias Huss used this unique range of measurements to examine how climate change in the last century affected the glaciers. The work was carried out under the supervision of Martin Funk, professor and head of the Department for Glaciology at the Laboratory for Hydraulics, Hydrology and Glaciology (‘VAW’) at ETH Zurich, who is also co-author of the study.

Let's stop attributing torture solely to Bush. It's been the long-standing practice of the U.S. since the Europeans landed here.

Permalink Afghan MPs snub Karzai's new cabinet, reject 17 out of 24 of his nominees

Afghanistan's president, Hamid Karzai, was dealt a painful political blow yesterday when the country's parliament rejected 70% of his nominees for a new cabinet, including a regionally powerful warlord and the only female minister. The secret ballot of MPs, which came at a crucial point in Karzai's quest for legitimacy in the eyes of Afghans and the rest of the world, resulted in the rejection of 17 out of 24 of his nominees.

Permalink IRAN: Video shows gunman opening fire on demonstrators, who fight back

Iranian police have stated strenuously that security forces weren't armed with guns during Dec. 27 clashes in Tehran between security forces and protesters. But newly discovered amateur video, apparently taken with a cellphone, tells a different story. In the video, a man can be seen and heard opening fire on a crowd of unarmed demonstrators as a man cries out, "Dishonorable Basiji!" The gunman appears to be a plainclothes security official, perhaps a Basiji militiaman or an intelligence operative working for the Revolutionary Guard. Witnesses say such forces have been trying to terrorize protesters. But there's a twist. Even though he opens fire on the crowd, possibly wounding or killing demonstrators, the protesters don't scatter away. Instead they fight back.
