Permalink France, UK summon Israeli ambassadors over settlement controversy

International criticism has been mounting against Israeli plans to build new settlements. The UK and France summoned their Israeli ambassadors to get clarification and show disapproval amid reports of recalls. Other countries also spoke out. - International reaction against Israel has been heated. Britain is reportedly considering a strong reaction to Israel’s plans and has summoned Israeli ambassador for talks over planned settlements, asking for clarification on the issue. However, conflicting reports say that Britain has denied consideration for recalling its ambassador to Israel. British Foreign Office spokesperson told AFP that “the recent Israeli government decision to build 3,000 new housing units threatens the two-state solution and makes progress through negotiations harder to achieve.” France, which was the first major European country to announce support for Palestinian recognition at the UN, echoed the position of the UK. Paris sent a letter to the Israeli government, calling the settlement decision "a considerable obstacle to the two-state solution."

Permalink Israel confiscates Palestinian funds

Israel will keep $120 million dollars in Palestinian funds this month as "punishment" for disobeying orders to hold off on its UN bid, Israeli media reported Sunday. Israel says the Palestinians owe about $200 million in unpaid electricity bills. Israel each month collects about $100 million dollars in taxes and tariffs for goods transferred through Israeli ports destined for Palestinian markets. The UN General Assembly on Thursday approved PA Prime Minister Mahmoud Abbas’ bid to upgrade the status of Palestine as a non-member state to the ire of Israel and the United States. Israel has long warned of punitive actions against Abbas, who already struggles to pay salaries for civil servants, should he push forward with the UN bid. As further punishment, Israel on Friday announced plans to expand illegal settlements by an additional 3,000 homes in East Jerusalem and the occupied West Bank, drawing condemnation from European countries, and some mild criticism from the United States.

Permalink The Pentagon’s Revolving Door with Defense Contractors…Some Shocking Statistics

High ranking generals and admirals earn their stars. They earn their stripes. Then, they earn their cash. New research by Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) found 70% of the 108 three-and-four star generals and admirals who retired between 2009 and 2011 took jobs with defense contractor or consultants. In at least a few cases, the retirees have continued to advise the Department of Defense while on the payroll of defense contractors, suggesting the Pentagon may not always be receiving unbiased counsel. A Boston Globe investigation revealed the number of retired three-and-four star generals and admirals moving into lucrative defense industry jobs rose from less than 50% between 1994 and 1998 to a stratospheric 80% between 2004 and 2008.

Permalink US set to establish new spy network as big as CIA: Report

The Pentagon has embarked on an ambitious plan to establish an overseas espionage network which is expected to incorporate a colossal structure of operatives as big as the CIA, a report says. - According to the US officials, the new scenario has been devised to transform the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) into a spy service more focused than the CIA on military aspects, the Washington Post reported on Sunday. Based on the planned structure, the DIA is expected to recruit an unprecedented number of 1,600 clandestine operatives called “collectors” across the world over the next five years. The DIA operatives will be trained by the CIA and cooperate with the US Joint Special Operations Command, but they will receive their espionage assignments from the Department of Defense. “This is not a marginal adjustment for DIA… This is a major adjustment for national security,” said DIA Director Lieutenant General Michael T. Flynn at a recent conference in which he outlined the transformations without mentioning the details.

Permalink Scholarship with benefits: Sex-for-tuition site exposed in UK

Man behind ‘sex for tuition fees’ website is named - students were offered up to £15,000 a year to cover cost of university. - The man uncovered as running a “sex for tuition fees” website has been named after being secretly filmed. Earlier this week, The Independent revealed how young women were lured to meetings with the man through the SponsorAScholar.co.uk website. An undercover reporter recorded a meeting with the man who told her that sponsorship was dependent on a "high level of sexual intimacy" with men in two-hour sessions in hotel rooms up to four times a term. The man filmed by The Independent was said last night to go under the name Mark Lancaster, but when contacted by a television programme refused to speak about the Sponsor a Scholar scheme. He had previously claimed to have arranged for 1,400 young women to win sponsorship. When he met the undercover Independent reporter, he told her that to qualify for the scheme she would have to undertake a "practical assessment" with him to prove she would offer "the level of intimacy" that would be demanded by sponsors.
