Permalink Shock Surveillance Video Shows LAPD Officers Body-Slamming Defenseless Woman Into the Pavement During Violent Arrest

video that is making its rounds shows two Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) officers snatching a female driver and violently slamming her body into the ground — twice. The woman’s alleged offense? Talking on her cell phone while driving and, subsequently, resisting arrest. As a result of the trauma, Michelle Jordan, 34, sustained intensive bruising and other related blemishes and injuries.

The incident unfolded after the registered nurse and mother was apparently seen by authorities using her phone while operating her vehicle — an action that is banned by law in the State of California. Officers followed her car into the parking lot of a Del Taco restaurant in Tujunga, California, on August 21, where the arrest then took place. The entire incident, according to the Daily Mail, was captured on surveillance video.

Jordan, who is 5-feet 4-inches, apparently allegedly didn‘t listen to officers’ commands (or so say officials looking into the matter). After she got out of her vehicle, she purportedly was told to get back inside. When she refused, the male officers slammed Jordan onto the ground and then handcuffed her. But the bizarre incident didn’t end there. She was then slammed again into the ground.

Permalink Torture with Impunity

Yesterday, a dark chapter in American history got that much more disgraceful. Attorney General Holder announced the closure of the last two open criminal inquiries into abusive interrogations by CIA officials. The pronouncement means that not a single CIA official will be prosecuted in federal courts for any of the abuse, torture or even death that took place at the hands of CIA officers and contractors. Since 9/11, dozens of terrorism suspects have been held incommunicado by the CIA in secret prisons around the world and subjected to repeated brutality in the name of extracting information. The White House and its lead legal advice team, the Justice Department's Office of Legal Counsel (OLC), approved the use of these previously illegal tactics based on profoundly flawed legal reasoning and a complete lack of interrogation or law enforcement experience.

Permalink A decade of wars brings respect for US: Obama

President Barack Obama says after spending the past decade fighting wars, the United States is now stronger and more respected around the world. “We're winding down a decade of war, we're destroying terrorist networks that attacked us and we've restored American leadership,” Obama said on Friday at the United States’ Fort Bliss Army post in El Paso, Texas. “And today every American can be proud that the United States is safer, the United States is stronger and the United States is more respected in the world,” he added.

Permalink World's richest woman says poor should have less fun, work harder

Just in case you were beginning to think rich people were deeply misunderstood and that they feel the pain of those who are less fortunate, here's the world's wealthiest woman, Australian mining tycoon Gina Rinehart, with some helpful advice. "If you're jealous of those with more money, don't just sit there and complain," she said in a magazine piece. "Do something to make more money yourself -- spend less time drinking or smoking and socialising, and more time working." Yeah, let them eat cake. Rinehart made her money the old-fashioned way: She inherited it.

Permalink US acquits CIA of killing and torturing of prisoners

The US Justice Department ended a four-year probe into the CIA’s controversial, and at times brutal, treatment of detainees, closing two final homicide investigations without filing charges. The decision sparked outrage among human rights supporters. - US Attorney General Eric Holder announced on Thursday that no charges will be filed in the cases of two terror suspects who died in CIA custody – one in Iraq in 2003 and another in Afghanistan in 2002. "The admissible evidence would not be sufficient to obtain and sustain a conviction beyond a reasonable doubt," Holder said. Gul Rahman died in 2002 at a secret prison in Afghanistan known as the ‘Salt Pit’ after being bound to a wall in near-freezing temperatures. Manadel al-Jamadi, also a suspected militant, died in 2003 in Iraq’s Abu Ghraib, where his corpse was photographed, wrapped in plastic and packed in ice.

Permalink A Crystal-Clear View of an Extinct Girl's Genome

Photo: Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology

Researchers have sequenced the genome of an archaic Siberian girl 31 times over, using a new method that amplifies single strands of DNA. As the team reports online in Science this week, more than 99% of the nucleotides are sequenced at least 10 times, so researchers have as sharp a picture of this ancient genome as of a living person's. That precision allows the team to compare the nuclear genome of this girl, who lived in Siberia's Denisova Cave more than 50,000 years ago, directly to the genomes of living people, producing a "near-complete" catalog of the small number of genetic changes that make us different from the Denisovans, who were close relatives of Neandertals.

Thomas H. Douglass: The Denisova discovery - An international team of scientists made headlines at the end of last year when they used genetic evidence to show that an ancient people, once living in the Altai Mountains of southern Siberia, were distant cousins of the Neanderthals and contributed to the modern human genome before their extinction. The discovery is a triumph of modern genomics and decades of publicly funded science research in the United States and elsewhere, which has led to the sequencing of the human genome and promises to revolutionize our understanding of evolution, disease, and global genetic diversity.

Geert Hofstede: Norwegian culture relative to other world cultures - Masculinity / Femininity: A high score (masculine) on this dimension indicates that the society will be driven by competition, achievement and success, with success being defined by the winner / best in field – a value system that starts in school and continues throughout organisational behaviour. A low score (feminine) on the dimension means that the dominant values in society are caring for others and quality of life. A feminine society is one where quality of life is the sign of success and standing out from the crowd is not admirable. The fundamental issue here is what motivates people, wanting to be the best (masculine) or liking what you do (feminine). Norway scores 8 and is thus the second most feminine society (after the Swedes). This means that the softer aspects of culture are valued and encouraged such as leveling with others, consensus, “independent” cooperation and sympathy for the underdog. Taking care of the environment is important. Trying to be better than others is neither socially nor materially rewarded. Societal solidarity in life is important; work to live and DO your best. Incentives such as free time and flexibility are favoured. Interaction through dialog and “growing insight” is valued and self development along these terms encouraged. Focus is on well-being, status is not shown. An effective manager is a supportive one, and decision making is achieved through involvement.
