SHATTERED ATOMS, SHATTERED ISLANDS

The first thermonuclear explosion ever to occur on the earth, Ivy Mike, was detonated by the US Military on Eniwetok atoll in the Marshall Islands on 1st November 1952. The device itself weighed 60 tons and was housed in a six-storey structure containing the massive cooling apparatus needed to produce a temperature of minus 250 degrees Centigrade whereby the deuterium used to fuel the bomb could be liquified. Sixteen months later, the explosion of Castle Bravo on Bikini atoll marked the beginning of a second series of thermonuclear tests staged with the express purpose of creating a much lighter "deliverable" thermonuclear weapon in the megaton range. Promethean Hubris offers an account of the events surrounding these tests, and describes the human and environmental consequences of such tests from the perspective of the inhabitants of the Marshall Islands. Special attention is given to the effects of Castle Bravo, the first of six thermonuclear tests that were conducted as part of Operation Castle between 1st March and 22nd April 1954. The voices heard in this program include J. Robert Oppenheimer, Holly Barker, Tony de Brum, Stephen Osborn, Martini Gotje and Vincent Di Stefano. The music heard in this program includes that of A. Coe, Alexander Sitnikov, Steve Kahn and Rob Mounsey, Dead Can Dance, Doc & Lena Selyanina, and Archie Roach. An essay contextualising much of the information presented in Promethean Hubris can also be accessed here. Please write to vincent@thehealingproject.net.au.

Permalink Thomas Berry. Healing a Savaged Earth

"Restoring a Ruined Earth. The Heroic Mission of Thomas Berry," by Vincent Di Stefano

Despite the fact that we have clearly entered uncharted territory in relation to the effects of industrial civilisation on the fate of the earth and her creatures, big government of all persuasions seems intent on relentlessly pursuing economic growth, environmental plunder and social and political control at every level.

In view of our gathering predicament reflected in such intangibles as steadily rising carbon dioxide levels, deepening ocean acidification and accelerating methane exhalations from formerly locked under-sea and tundra deposits - to say nothing of the numerous social, political and environmental pathologies that continue to assail humanity - it may be instructive to revisit the thoughtful offerings of Thomas Berry, a wise elder who sought to awaken us all to the changes that have already occurred and those that will inevitably follow.

"Healing a Savaged Earth" is a tribute to the prophetic insight, vision and integrity of cultural historian Thomas Berry. Though others viewed him as a depth theologian and cultural guardian, he chose in his later years to call himself a "geologian" as an acknowledgement of his earth-centred philosophy which drew strongly from the insights of Taoism, Confucianism and the mysticism of Teilhard de Chardin and Henri Bergson.

Permalink A Beautiful Bohemian. Remembering Darren Jones

[Vincent Di Stefano:] We have in the present age become desensitised to violence. It is glorified in movies, simulated in computer games, sanctioned in contact sports and casually glossed over in the blur of daily news broadcasts. Yet every act of violence can create psychic and emotion shock-waves that reverberate thereafter in the lives of those affected by it.

A Beautiful Bohemian. Remembering Darren Jones offers a sixth anniversary remembrance of the death by knifing of Australian musician Darren Jones who was killed in an unprovoked attack while returning home from the Victorian College of the Arts in the early afternoon of February 23rd 2006.

[An] audio presentation was developed through a series of depth interviews with 11 people - many of them fellow musicians - who were part of Darren Jones' intimate circle. It explores the effects of this shocking event on the lives of a community of artists and reflects the slow and painful process of healing that follows such an existential collapse.

The music heard in this program is drawn from recordings of several bands in which Darren Jones participated as guitarist and vocalist. It also includes three musical tributes composed and performed by Nico Di Stefano, Ben Kelly and Dan Licht . The track Blood Stain was composed and performed by fellow musician and friend, the late Heath King who was himself tragically killed in a road accident in September 2008. A Beautiful Bohemian can be downloaded here. A shorter half-hour version was broadcast on 360 Documentaries (ABC Radio National) in September 2010. It can be heard here.

Permalink Bahrain: Shouting in the dark

Dear friends

We have seen extraordinary duplicity on the part of powerful Western interests throughout the events of the Arab Spring, from Washington's early defence of Mubarak to the continuing assault on oil-rich Libya by the US, British, French and Italian airforces.

Some may recall hearing or reading about the harassment and persecution experienced by Bahraini doctors who treated protesters at the Salamaniya hospital in the capital Manama earlier this year. The protests began, were brutally crushed by Bahraini security forces - with the support of Saudi troops - and have been virtually forgotten since.

Twenty of those doctors and their fellow nurses were sentenced by a Bahraini military court yesterday. Thirteen received sentences of 15 years for "crimes against the state." The remaining seven received sentences ranging from 5 to 10 years. Their crime was to speak critically about the brutality of the government attack on unarmed protesters that resulted in a flood of dying and severely injured civilians being brought to the hospital for treatment on March 16, 2011.

Yet again, the US has been conspicuously absent. It so happens that Bahrain houses the US Navy's Fifth Fleet with its 15 warships and aircraft carrier battle group. Over the past two years, hundreds of millions of dollars of deadly hardware have been sold to the Bahraini government by US armaments manufacturers. And another 53 million dollar deal is presently on the table.

This well produced, high quality 50 minute video documentary "Bahrain: Shouting in the Dark" was broadcast by Al Jazeera early last month. It shows much of what has been hidden from the rest of the world.

With best wishes

Vincent Di Stefano

Permalink The Great Cancer Hoax: The Brilliant Cure the FDA Tried Their Best to Shut Down...

Important! The producers of this powerful film are allowing a full and FREE preview through June 20th! Please tell everyone you know to watch this film in its entirety through June 20th, 2011.

Burzynski, the Movie is the story of a medical doctor and Ph.D biochemist named Dr. Stanislaw Burzynski who won the largest, and possibly the most convoluted and intriguing legal battle against the Food and Drug Administration in American history.

In the 1970’s, Dr. Burzynski made a remarkable discovery that threatened to change the face of cancer treatment forever. His non-toxic gene-targeted cancer medicine could have helped save millions of lives over the last two decades had his discovery not been criminally suppressed by the US government, as his therapy, called “antineoplastons,” have been shown to effectively help cure some of the most “incurable” forms of terminal cancer.

This documentary takes you through the treacherous 14-year journey Dr. Burzynski and his patients have had to endure in order to finally obtain FDA-approved clinical trials of antineoplastons.

His story is yet another testament that fact can be far stranger than fiction, as the film exposes the powerful, unscrupulous forces that work to maintain the status quo of the medical- and pharmaceutical industry at any cost—including the lives of millions of people.
