Permalink Some of Us Don't Think the Russian Invasion Was "Aggression." Here's Why.

💬 “We are not threatening anyone.… We have made it clear that any further NATO movement to the east is unacceptable. There’s nothing unclear about this. We aren’t deploying our missiles to the border of the United States, but the United States IS deploying their missiles to the porch of our house. Are we asking too much? We’re just asking that they not deploy their attack-systems to our home…. What is so hard to understand about that?” –Russian President Vladimir Putin

Imagine if the Mexican army started bombarding American ex-pats living in Mexico with heavy artillery-rounds killing thousands and leaving thousands more wounded. What do you think Joe Biden would do?  Would he brush it off like a big nothingburger and move on or would he threaten the Mexican government with a military invasion that would obliterate the Mexican Army, level their biggest cities, and send the government running for cover?  Which of these two options do you think Biden would choose?

Permalink Putin Offers to Ship Gas Through Undamaged Line in Nord Stream 2

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday offered to ship gas to Europe through an undamaged line in the Nord Stream 2 pipeline, an idea that was quickly rejected by Germany | Putin said that one line of the Nord Stream 2 remained pressurized despite the attacks on both Nord Stream pipelines that occurred last month and caused gas to leak into the Baltic Sea. Both lines of Nord Stream 1 were damaged, while only one Nord Stream 2 line leaked gas after the explosions.  Putin condemned the Nord Stream attacks as acts of terrorism. “The act of sabotage of the Nord Stream 1 and 2 is an act of international terrorism aimed at undermining energy security of the entire continent by blocking supplies of cheap energy,” he said.  Putin also said that there are countries that stand to gain from the sabotage, including Poland and the US. The US tried to stop the construction of Nord Stream 2 for years, and President Biden threatened to put an “end” to the pipeline if Russia invaded Ukraine. Secretary of State Antony Blinken has called the incident a “tremendous opportunity” to wean Europe off Russian gas.

Permalink Ukraine War Could Lead to WWIII If Ukraine Joins Nato: Russia Reiterates

A Russian security official has reiterated that the conflict in Ukraine could escalate into World War III, if Kiev's request for joining the US-led NATO military alliance is accepted | Alexander Venediktov, the deputy secretary of Russia's Security Council, told the country’s TASS news agency that "Kyiv is well aware that such a step would mean a guaranteed escalation to World War Three.”  In late September, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy formally applied for a fast-track NATO membership and ruled out talks with President Vladimir Putin as the war in his country entered its eighth month.  Venediktov, however, said that he felt Ukraine's application was propaganda as the West understood the consequences of Ukrainian membership of NATO.“The suicidal nature of such a step is understood by NATO members themselves," he added.  If accepted, NATO-aligned forces would formally be drawn into the war in Ukraine.
