India has summoned the top American diplomat at the US embassy in New Delhi to protest - for the third time - US spying efforts following new charges that its National Security Agency (NSA) targeted India’s ruling party. ● The development on Wednesday came after a new document supplied by fugitive former NSA contractor Edward Snowden was made public by the Washington Post on Monday showing that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party was among authorized targets for the US spy agency in 2010, when it was India’s main opposition. “What we have said is that we expect a response and an assurance that this won’t happen again,” said an unnamed Indian Foreign Ministry source, who spoke to the AFP on condition of anonymity.

You have probably heard about the extremely controversial Facebook “emotional contagion” study in which the company intentionally altered its news feed algorithm to see if it could manipulate its users’ emotions; but here is where it starts to get really strange. Initially, the press release from Cornell highlighting the study said at the bottom: “The study was funded in part by the James S. McDonnell Foundation and the Army Research Office.” Once people started asking questions about this, Cornell claimed it had made a mistake, and that there was no outside funding. Russia’s president has blamed the turmoil in Ukraine on the country’s newly-elected leader Petro Poroshenko. Vladimir Putin also criticized the West for its intention to turn the planet into a "global barracks." Russia’s president has laid the blame for the ongoing turmoil between Kiev and south-eastern regions squarely at the feet of Petro Poroshenko, after the Ukrainian leader terminated the ceasefire. He has stressed that Russia and European partners could not convince Poroshenko to not take the path of violence, which can’t lead to peace.

■ “Unfortunately, President Poroshenko has made the decision to resume military actions, and we – meaning myself and my colleagues in Europe – could not convince him that the way to reliable, firm and long-term peace can’t lie through war,” Putin said. “So far, Petro Poroshenko had no direct relation to orders to take military action. Now he has taken on this responsibility in full. Not only military, but also political, more importantly."

The choice by US President Barack Obama and the neo-conservative Cold War hawks running the US foreign policy establishment of John F. Tefft as the new US Ambassador to Russia should be setting off warning bells all over the Kremlin and in fact in all of the countries currently undergoing or targeted for US regime change/destabilization operations including Venezuela, Brazil, Syria and all other countries pursuing an independent foreign policy. With the current humanitarian catastrophe in Ukraine and the rise of violent fascist forces, the fact that the chief architect of Operation Ukraine is now being sent to Russia is at once chilling and at the same time predictable.

While continuing to insist they are trying to keep their involvement limited to “advisory” operations, the Pentagon continues to pour military equipment into Iraq, with US combat troops on the ground to carry out this new Iraq War. Today, the Pentagon is rushing Apache attack helicopters to Baghdad, along with more Shadow drones, couching it as a move to prepare for a possible evacuation of the US Embassy. Yet far from being focused on the embassy itself, officials say the US ground troops will be operating the helicopter gunships to “protect US interests” in and around Baghdad.

Amnesty International has lashed out at Israel for its aggression against Palestinians over the case of three Israeli settlers. ● The rights group said on Tuesday that Tel Aviv’s ongoing operations against Palestinians in the West Bank are in blatant violation of international humanitarian law. “Nothing can justify these abductions and murders, which we condemn again. Those responsible must be brought to justice,” said Philip Luther, the Middle East and North Africa Programme Director at Amnesty International. Luther said that the Israeli authorities won’t be able to bring to justice those responsible for the murder of the three settlers through the collective punishment of Palestinians. “But justice will not be served by Israel seeking revenge by imposing collective punishment, or committing other violations of Palestinians’ rights. Rather, the Israeli authorities must conduct a full, thorough and impartial investigation that leads to the prosecution of those suspected of being responsible in fair trials,” he added.
