Permalink Syrian Town Turns on al-Qaeda, Killing 50

Reports coming out of Hama, a central Syrian Province, reveal a shocking turn of events, as locals in the town of Taibet al-Emam, sick of living under the rule of al-Qaeda’s Nusra Front, attacked the Islamist rebels. The locals were said to have gotten fed up with the kidnappings and burglaries by Nusra fighters, and took up arms against them, killing at least 50 and chasing them from the town. Taibet al-Emam has been under the control of various rebel factions since December of 2012, when the Free Syrian Army moved into the town. In recent months, as with the rest of Syria, it has fallen under harsher Islamist factions’ control. The rebel factions have so far not commented on the situation, but their ability to control territory on the frontier with the Assad government could be seriously compromised if the locals start turning against them in this manner.

Seymour M. Hersh On Obama, Erdoğan and the Syrian rebels || For months there had been acute concern among senior military leaders and the intelligence community about the role in the war of Syria’s neighbours, especially Turkey. Prime Minister Recep Erdoðan was known to be supporting the al-Nusra Front, a jihadist faction among the rebel opposition, as well as other Islamist rebel groups. ‘We knew there were some in the Turkish government,’ a former senior US intelligence official, who has access to current intelligence, told me, ‘who believed they could get Assad’s nuts in a vice by dabbling with a sarin attack inside Syria – and forcing Obama to make good on his red line threat.’ [...] Barring a major change in policy by Obama, Turkey’s meddling in the Syrian civil war is likely to go on. ‘I asked my colleagues if there was any way to stop Erdoðan’s continued support for the rebels, especially now that it’s going so wrong,’ the former intelligence official told me. ‘The answer was: “We’re screwed.” We could go public if it was somebody other than Erdoðan, but Turkey is a special case. They’re a Nato ally. The Turks don’t trust the West. They can’t live with us if we take any active role against Turkish interests. If we went public with what we know about Erdoðan’s role with the gas, it’d be disastrous.

Patrick Martin: New exposé by Seymour Hersh: Turkey staged gas attack to provoke US war on Syria In a lengthy article published Sunday by the London Review of Books, investigative journalist Seymour Hersh reports that the sarin gas attack on a Damascus suburb on August 21, 2013 was actually carried out by Syrian “rebel” forces acting at the behest of Turkey, for the purpose of providing a pretext for a US attack on Syria. The gas attack killed many hundreds of people in the Damascus suburb of Ghouta, and the Obama administration and the corporate-controlled US media immediately blamed the Syrian government of Bashar al-Assad for the atrocity.

Permalink The US ordered Turkey to prepare for a false flag attack on Syria

Jason Scheurer Control of information is one of the most important tools the state uses to manipulate the public. The war on the Internet over the last few years is a prime example of why those like Edward Snowden are feared in the halls of power. It is not the unveiling of legitimate state secrets, but the unveiling of constitutional abuses and corruption at all levels of government that those in power fear. Evil men with political power seek the safety of darkness that the Internet now threatens to illuminate. In the age of social media, it is getting harder for corruption, like this recent Turkish revelation, to be controlled. Unfortunately, in response, dishonest governments are fighting back with media blackouts. When it comes to this particular NATO partner, it appears that creating a false flag incident is something that just isn’t important enough for public discussion — at least according to traditional media outlets. Instead, these news sources are focusing their attention on the fact that web sites like Twitter and YouTube have been shut down. The real story are the reasons why. Ask yourself, Why were these websites attacked, and why is the mainstream media creating a false narrative?

Permalink BBC ignores Israel's killing of Palestinian kids

Yousef al-Shawamrah, 14, was shot in the back and hip with live ammunition near his village of Deir al-Asal al-Fawqa, which sits alongside Israel’s separation barrier, on March 19. Shawamrah left home around 6:30 a.m. to forage for wild thistle, used in Palestinian cooking, along with two friends, 12-year-old Zahi and 17-year-old Muntaser. The boys planned to look for thistle in an area of land belonging to the village that now sits on the other side of the separation barrier. As they crossed the barrier soldiers fired three shots without warning, Muntaser told DCI-Palestine in a sworn testimony. Another two bullets were fired, which hit Shawamrah in the hip and back as he tried to return through the barrier. Six soldiers, dressed in black fatigues and black face masks, then emerged from a group of olive trees less than 70 meters away, according to Muntaser.

Permalink US Supreme Court Pushes Towards “Legalized Corruption”

The United States Supreme Court ruled 5-4 Wednesday to remove the cap on the total amount of money individuals can contribute to political campaigns, eliminating yet another constraint on the direct domination of the financial oligarchy over political life. || Every fundamental constitutional protection has been gutted, under Bush and then Obama, by a government that declares the right to spy on the population, torture and assassinate US citizens without due process. All of these attacks are expressions of a state that functions ever more nakedly as an instrument of the financial aristocracy, determined to meet any opposition with military and police repression.

Permalink Tony Blair 'knew all about CIA secret kidnap programme’

Tony Blair knew in detail about the CIA’s secret kidnap and interrogation programme after the September 11 attacks and was kept informed “every step of the way” by MI6, a security source has told The Telegraph. Mr Blair, the then prime minister, and Jack Straw, his foreign secretary, were fully briefed on CIA activities and were shown now infamous Bush administration legal opinions that declared “enhanced interrogation” techniques such as waterboarding and stress positions to be legal, the source said. “The politicians took a very active interest indeed. They wanted to know everything. The Americans passed over the legal opinions saying that this was now 'legal’, and our politicians were aware of what was going on at the highest possible level. “The politicians knew in detail about everything – the torture and the rendition. They could have said [to M16] 'stop it, do not get involved’, but at no time did they,” said the source, who has direct and detailed knowledge of the transatlantic relations during that period.

Permalink EU ‘unhappy’ climate change is off G20 agenda

Europe is unhappy with Australia's decision to drop climate change from the G20 agenda and is lobbying the Abbott government to reconsider. || European Union officials say Australia has become completely “disengaged” on climate change since Tony Abbott was elected in September last year. They are disappointed with the Prime Minister’s approach, saying Australia was considered an important climate change player under Labor. One well-placed EU official has likened the change to “losing an ally”. The EU has a long-running emissions trading scheme which was going to be linked to Australia's market. But Mr Abbott has pledged to scrap the carbon price in favour of his direct action policy.

Permalink Big Brother’s Facebook: UK, US intelligence ‘infiltrating’ social media

American and British intelligence hope to take advantage of social media platforms, like Twitter, YouTube and Facebook, in an effort to spread disinformation and propaganda, as well as potentially foment public protests, recent Snowden leaks claim. According to Glenn Greenwald, the journalist who first broke the news on the Snowden NSA leaks, an Orwellian-style dystopia is lurking on the horizon as western spy agencies see an opportunity for manipulating public opinion and disseminating state propaganda by exploiting global internet giants, such as Flickr, YouTube, Facebook and Twitter. “These ideas – discussions of how to exploit the internet, specifically social media, to surreptitiously disseminate viewpoints friendly to Western interests and spread false or damaging information about targets – appear repeatedly throughout the archive of materials provided by NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden,” Greenwald revealed in the online publication, The Intercept, where he is an editor.
