The audience responded with shouts of "Yes!" and clapped in support of the idea.

Permalink Canadians Seek to Arrest George W. Bush Oct. 20

Canada Must Arrest George W. Bush if he Enters Canada - An upcoming planned speaking engagement in Canada by former President George W. Bush is again generating a wave of protest. Bush is reportedly scheduled to speak on October 20th at a gathering in Surrey, British Columbia hosted by Surrey Mayor Diane Watts. But Lawyers Against the War (LAW) says the Canadian government must either bar Bush at the border because of his alleged involvement in torture and other war crimes and crimes against humanity, or order his arrest when he enters Canada both to ensure he is prosecuted here or elsewhere, and to prevent him from returning to safe haven from prosecution in the United States. In an August 25 letter to Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the Canadian Ministers of justice, immigration, public safety and foreign affairs, the group says “there is overwhelming evidence that George W. Bush …aided and abetted and counseled the torture of non-Americans at U.S. controlled prisons outside the U.S.”

Permalink Erdoğan slams Israel on start of Arab tour - Video

Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Turkey's prime minister, has told Arab foreign ministers that Israel has isolated itself and must "pay the price" after refusing to apologise for its raid on a Gaza-bound aid flotilla last year. - In his opening address to a meeting of Arab League in Cairo on Tuesday, Erdoğan also condemned Israeli policies and said that the recognition of a Palestinian state was "not an option but an obligation". Erdoğan spoke as part of a three-day visit to Egypt aimed at boosting his government's standing in the Arab world after the uprisings of the "Arab Spring". Many in the Arab world have cheered Erdogan's tough stance on Israel. Turkey suspended military ties with Israel, expelled top Israeli diplomats, pledged to support the Palestinians' statehood bid and vowed to send the Turkish navy to escort Gaza-bound aid ships in the future. Erdoğan told the ministers, Israel "must pay the price for the crimes it committed".

Permalink Hamas Warns Against UN Bid

A spokesman for the Hamas movement warned on Wednesday about the consequences of going to the UN for recognition and full membership of the state of Palestine. - Hamas MP Salah al-Bardawil said that Hamas does not support President Mahmoud Abbas' decision to go to the United Nations. Bardawil said the bid was a tactical move, part of a negotiation process that was not based on principles. Hamas and other Palestinian resistance factions it leads would therefore not supporting the decision. In a seminar held in Gaza City, Bardawil warned that the borders of the State of Israel would be confirmed as a result of the vote. He said that Israel was created as a state without specific frontiers, but that the Israeli frontiers will be determined and the Palestinian borders will be set according to the resolution of 67. If that were to happen, Bardawil said, Palestinian resistance would not be able to shoot a single bullet against the Israeli occupation. Hamas leaders announced that they would ban any popular movement to advocate the Palestinian bid at the United Nations.

Permalink NATO Weary of Nation-Building, Occupation in Libya

NATO's leadership says any post-Gadhafi mission should be handled by the UN. - After over a decade of NATO missions in Afghanistan and Kosovo, the top levels of America’s European military alliance are eager to end the Libyan war and to avoid nation-building responsibilities. “We must end this Libyan business quickly,” one senior military officer told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity. “We just cannot afford this proliferation of missions which just drag on and on. One needs to finally end.” Facing drained resources from the violent quagmire in Afghanistan and potential defense budget cuts as a result of struggling economies, even NATO’s top military brass are weary of empire building in Libya. Many have been arguing for a United Nations peacekeeping force to take over now that Muammar Gadhafi has been ousted. Even NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen, who usually praises NATO’s commitment to interventionism and nation-building, has made clear that any follow-up mission in Libya must be dealt with by the UN.

Permalink Muammar Gaddafi's spokesman Moussa Ibrahim speaks to Reuters - Libya

Sept. 14 - Muammar Gaddafi's spokesman Moussa Ibrahim speaks to Reuters via crackly telephone line, and says Muammar Gaddafi is still in Libya and in good health, and gathering his forces for a fightback. - "The leader is in good health, in high morale … of course he is in Libya," Moussa Ibrahim told Reuters.

"The fight is as far away from the end as the world can imagine. We are still very powerful, our army is still powerful, we have thousands upon thousands of volunteers," he said. "We have huge areas of Libya under our control — on the northern coast, in the western areas of the country and the whole south belongs to us," he said. "We are gathering our forces and we will liberate every single Libyan city even if we have to fight street-to-street, house-to-house, for years to come."

Permalink Bani Walid: NATO commits massacre in the name of democracy

Thomas Mathew writes from London: "Pardon my French, but has NATO gone f..king nuts in Libya, whacking people in the name of democracy? We are now witnessing a massacre from the air in Bani Walid, with a population of 100,000 people. - The rebels had given the people in Bani Walid an ultimatum some time ago: surrender, or we move in. Obviously, no one had surrendered, simply because for them it would be like committing suicide. And now the rebels have started their assault, and the city's terrified population, the very one that NATO is supposed to protect, is now the target of bombings and shellings. This is about as far from what the UN Security Council resolution on Libya has sanctioned as it gets. (By the way, don't you just love how that creep Ban Ki Moon and his sidekicks are keeping quiet about the mayhem in Libya?). Do you want me to remind you what UN resolution 1973 said? No, well I'll still do it, for the sake of proving that trigger happy NATO generals have lost their marbles completely, along with their political masters.

Permalink 15 NATO tankers torched in Afghanistan

Taliban militants have attacked 15 NATO supply vehicles transporting fuel destined for US-led forces and set them on fire in Afghanistan's western province of Farah, Press TV reports. - A group of unidentified armed men opened fire on the tankers in Bakwa district of Farah province late on Wednesday. Two drivers and a security guard escorting the convoy were killed in the shootout while five others, including two security guards, suffered injuries, a Press TV correspondent reported. The assailants later fled the scene and their whereabouts are unknown. Taliban spokesman Qari Yousuf Ahmadi claimed responsibility for the assault on the oil tankers. He claimed that eight security guards were killed, and 18 tankers were also set ablaze in the incident. The US military and NATO rely heavily on the Pakistani supply route into landlocked Afghanistan. Militants armed Afghans have stepped up attacks on NATO supply convoys in Afghanistan and neighboring Pakistan over the past months. During this period large numbers of NATO trucks have been torched in Pakistan alone.
