Permalink Bahrain uses torture to silence critics

A leading Bahraini human rights activist, Mohammad al-Maskati, says Manama subjects critics to harsh torture techniques to silence them. Mohammad al-Maskati, who heads the Manama-based Youth Society on Human Rights, told Press TV in an interview that any kind of torture is against the Convention Against Torture -- which Bahrain ratified in 1998 and prohibits torture and ill-treatment under any circumstances. Bahrain's envoy to the US has downplayed allegations of torture against oppositionists as reports accuse Manama of mistreatments ranging from beating to sexual abuse.

Permalink 'Mission creep' feared in Libya campaign

As European countries start sending military advisers, the international effort is beginning to show signs of going beyond its original mission. Trying to assuage concerns of mission creep, the US maintains it will not send any ground troops into Libya and that any US involvement on the ground will be for purely humanitarian reasons. But some US legislators are publicly worrying that the situation in Libya could develop into a stalemate unless greater military force is applied.

Permalink Ken O'Keefe: Thoughts on Vittorio Arrigoni & Surfing in Gaza

Spent much of the day at the beach in Gaza today, a very rare and special day indeed. Vittorio spent much of his time at this beach so it was that many people expressed their love and respect for him, as virtually every Palestinian I meet does. I also surfed for the first time in about 13 years; or at least I tried. Was an absolute joy to be in the sea and to surf in Gaza is a real honour. The guys I surfed with, Mohammed and Hatem were great, offered me a board the moment I started bodysurfing next to them.
